14:08 Automatic - The Pointer Sisters (1983). I love when you pull out the classics
These patches all sound quiet lovely. Thanks for making them!
I love your videos Matt. They bring me much joy. This is not a synth I'm planning to buy, but it's so fun to watch you play with it!
Fantastic! I have been having fun with this thing for awhile now, but this video is definitely going to help me unlock some new things. Thanks for teaching us!
Finally a real powerful and abordable analog poly synth ! So underrated, this machine will be iconic in some years.
Hey Matt, totally agree. Great sounding synth.
Amazing sounds/playing (as always), and really loved your video edits!
I love my Take 5! Fantastic sounds, my friend!
Thank you. Matt 👍
Really great stuff. I am particularly impressed with what you did with a few of the pad sounds towards end of the video. They sound at once classic and totally modern, with expressive possibility for days thanks to smart aftertouch programming on your part. Can't wait to try these out!
Thank you for posting this and giving an awesome run through on all the many options this synth has. I’ve owned mine for a year, and still find myself overwhelmed by the option. I should add, it’s was my 1st synth. Lol
Really enjoy your channel and playing. Thank you!!
My first modern analog poly, criminally underrated, at a brilliant price point for a sequential synth.
You're on Fire! It's funny, you with all the expensive instruments are having (and sharing) so much fun with this affordable one!
So glad I bought the T5. Most inspirational synth I have. Thank you for the vids on it, they helped me decide on it 👍
Inspirational is a word I most often use regarding this. I own a Matriarch and OB6, but think the T5 is what I would snatch if my building was on fire.
I have one , and it is superb for playing funky leads and then getting stuck into teh step sequencer and mailing up acid house sequences. Love it love it ( used to own a Supernova 2)
I don't even own this synth but you always learn such useful concepts here that apply to all synths really. Amazing. Thanks!
I no longer look at my “Take 5” the same way after watching your video Matt! thank you, thank you very much ! I say I'm lucky to have one, it's very inspiring! 🙂
Just picked up this future classic - What a splendid review and i cannot wait to grab this soundset! Subscribed!
Great job on the visual effects and editing at the end!
Awesome design and playing
I love the take 5 sounds and it’s really fun to play
I have passionately exclaimed that this is the best value for money synths in its class, for some time. Yeah they aren’t cheap cheap, but the sounds are sublime. We use mine on absolutely every track we produce. Also Matt you are not only a ridiculous player, but your synth programming is fairly otherworldly. My Take 5 sounds good, but you make it sound infinitely better with your ability. I will be getting this preset pack!
Edit: Also not stated enough, I really think these have a great keyboard too, keys have a decent weight to them but feel strong, especially when leaning into the aftertouch.
Thank you for this, needed confirmation to buy!!
Outstanding video. Thank you 🙏
Moves my emotions nice sound nice play
I love my Take5!!
great sounds! The Solina-through-a-phaser at the end was amazing - and the "Automatic" sound ---- and there was a quite Sakamoto kind of one too - but it seems like a really useful synth with your sound bank
those Jarre-esque strings at the end were superb
I have this synth and I use it often in my recordings. I love it
Amazing
Beautiful sounds, would love to have a T5 one day!
Awesome. I've had one of these on my "gotta get" list.
Brilliant!
Dude these patches are NASSSSTYYYY
I’ve been playing the Take 5 a lot recently and I love the raw sound. One of the best sounding synths out there. My only wish is that it had at least one more voice.
I like that track at the beginning of the video. Cheers mate!!
Awesome. getting them
One of the best choices in today's analog synth market.
It’s not fully analog, though … and I’m not referring to the fx …
@@kierenmoore3236nobody buying at this price point really cares about that. If you gotta have pUrE aNaLoG then yeah enjoy saving for a Prophet 10 or something
@@kierenmoore3236 what poly synth is?
@@jonwoodcock3198 the vca's are digital on this one, but that's a good thing, it just spices things up as far as stereo and control.
@@untml thanks that’s interesting. My point in asking that question was that any poly synth with fun modulation capabilities has digital components somewhere in the synth, “Fully Analog” doesn’t really make sense. Right?
Like it!! 👍.... and you can never have TOO much reverb! 😎
The low split function is a great function. Wish i had that on my little korg.
I could never afford any Sequential synth before this. Sound-wise and in terms of ease of use, I still don't get what the Take 5 has to envy the Prophet 5. Ok no wood ends and fewer octaves but it seems superior in every other way.
I bought one based on your prior review...this thing is by far, the bang-for-buck leader in analog synths.
It’s not fully analog, though.

having owned multiple $5k synths all the way to Volcas, yes, I couldn’t agree more. I have and will continually say Take5 is best 1350 I have ever spent on hardware.
First gas-inducing synth since it came out in years! Perfect synth in my book..
Please do a video on your awesome comping techniques, both left and right hand!
You can never have too many synthesizers. 😀 Keep doing it man!
I was testing a lot of synths the other day (OBX8, Prophet 5 Rev4, the new rolands Zen Core, Trigon)... and the one that really stood out for me soundwise was the Take 5. I was so impressed. The Prophet 5 is amazing, what a beautiful synth... but the Take 5 seems to be such a creative little thing for the price. Will get one as soon as I can.
Great sounds!! I always imagine being underwater for some soundscapes. Fun to see it for real :)
I've been having fun with AI!
This may indeed be my first real synth. Thank you!
I'm awful at music but these videos got me interested in synthizers so I ran out and got me a minifreak to play with.
That last patch got me
Geeze, I've had this thing since it came out and didn't notice there was a Random modulation source (I was using one shot LFOs). That's awesome.
So close to getting myself one of these for Christmas 😂
Matt is the best synth RUclipsr bar none
Honestly, I see the Take 5 as the spiritual successor to the Mopho x4, but much better. It is priced very close too if you adjust for inflation. I have a Mopho x4 and a Mopho desktop....so that is like my "Take 5" but I do want one of these some day.
A modern synth but i hear plenty of the early 80s there - Japan, and Fade To Grey -Visage. Tempting very tempting
I do appreciate that whenever you program sequential synths your love for the band Japan is really evident! BTW, Robert Dean and Steve Jansen play on my upcoming release "Always, Never" and is mixed by the legend Phill Brown (Talk Talk).
That’s awesome, they are great! Yes I love the oriental synth sounds from Tin Drum, big influence for me
Looking forward
To hearing that! Does that mean Rob Dean is living back in the UK
No, he's still in Costa Rica.
I had a Rev2 for a few years before selling it and buying a Prophet 6. It seems like the Take 5 resolved a lot of the gripes I had with the Rev2. Great and intuitive synth.
I’m currently trying to decide between the Take 5 and Rev2. What do you prefer about the Take 5?
My biggest gripe was the filter, it rarely spoke to me and had a small sweet spot. I was excited by the idea of making stacked patches with 16 voices, but in reality, rarely reached for it. @@T1M_Dx
remember Rev2 has 8 or 16 voices and bi-timbral as well so little or no voice stealing on that one in pads etc @@T1M_Dx
@@T1M_Dx Get the REV 2, if you can. You can use the gated sequencer to make it sound like just a out any VCO polysynth in history. It is such an underrated synth … People buy the,, do ‘t learn to program them, then flip them 🙃 … so you can probably pick one up for a great price 2nd hand, if you want to … Criminally underrated synth. The internal FX aren’t the best, but you don’t buy any Sequential synth for the FX … 😊
Great Video as always 👍 Best Wishes from Germany 😊🎶🎶🎧🎹🐯
Somehow reminiscent of the way I program my Moog One. I just wish the One offered modulation of the FX parameters, it would offer so many sound design possibilities (not that there aren’t enough for a lifetime of sonic exploration 😂) Cheers!
Awesome, thanks! Admittedly, I’ve not been using mine much lately and even considered selling it because I can do almost everything it can in my Hydrasynth too, and then so much more. However the Take 5 sounds very warm and analog out of the box (because it is) while the Hydra needs more tweaking. Now you made me wanna keep my Take 5 😀
The Take 5 isn’t fully analog, though. Between the synth engine, the poly at keybed and the ribbon, I’m a bit tempted by the Hydra.
@@kierenmoore3236You'll find something to complain about.
@@kierenmoore3236 seems you really troubled by this :)
Just to pre-empt anyone's comment here, the Take 5 "isn't fully analogue though"
@@untml Not at all, lol.
All my favourite stuff from the late 70s/80s used a Prophet. I had a Pro-One back in the day, but this is the first Sequential poly I've owned after all this time. There's something about the tone. Alright, it's probably not perfect enough for the 'matured in oak caskets' real ale analogue types, but it makes dirty sounds, ethereal sounds, workhorse sounds and comes with a pretty decent FX unit. That's what I call a bargain.
It does have its own sound/possibilities. That’s a good thing, imho.
I never listen those "real ale" people, ever 😅
@@Syntox Well, there are clearly different levels of raw sound, at different prices. At the same time, I think each of the Sequential offerings are good value for their price-points.
Nice… hoping for a review of the new Montage soon 😊
Hoping for a TEO-5 Matt Johnson review...PS, I already have one on pre-order, so consider your work already done ;)
I ordered mine last week and I expect to arrive tomorrow. Couldn't choose between a desktop Prophet 5 or Prophet 6 and then this synth took their spot. It seems to sound like both prophets and stand on it's own. Especially the modulation was important to me. I have a REV2, P'08, Pro 2 and Pro 3 and they are kings of modulation.
The mod matrix on the Take 5 blows the Rev2 outta the water in my opinion. If only Take 5 had 3 envelopes, 2 global LFO's and 2 per-voice LFO's...
@@jameshagerman I only got my take 5 yesterday and today I have the whole day using it, writing a one synths tune. Let's see.
Wow - why do you have both the REV 2 and the P’08 … ?!
Pro 2 & Pro 3 I understand, definitely different!! Which is you favourite and why?
Cheers! Be well!! 😎👍🏼
@@kierenmoore3236The P'08 is my all time favourite synth and I bought the REV2 for it's extra features and I also love to use both synths at ones and even 2 x 2 layers or 2 x 2 split sounds at ones. Also the 8 voice UNISON is sick, only my OB-6 UNISON as good, but has that little extra to it that not many synths have. All the LFO/MOD possibility's make it a sound design monster. No reason for me to sell the P'08. The P'08 and REV 2 cut through very other synth, create some extra layers and is just punchy-er and phat-er then most synths. The Take 5 is seriously awesome, you can create Prophet 5 and Prophet 6 sounds with it, the filter is seriously awesome and smooth like butter, just as nice as the OB-6 filter, but I like the gritty filter of the P'08/REV2 just as well, it also has something special, but is harder to work with, you need to find the sweet spot.
DSI can’t go wrong👽✌️
I’d love to see you dive into the tempest as a synth. Having 16 different patches you can play at the same time I haven’t seen someone with your knowledge go at it. And obviously a sound set would be a bonus
There’s no money for these boys in promoting synths like that …
@@kierenmoore3236 I mean he doesn’t strike me as a guy strapped for cash doing synth reviews for money.
@@Genital.Wartzenegger I would buy Matt's tempest presets
I hope you will make a video about the Montage M. That would be so awesome.
I’m looking into a new keyboard for gigs that’s lighter (and newer) than my Roland Rd-700gx. I love the action if it but too heavy to lug around. Have recently got MainStage too. any suggestions/recommendations or vids of a keyboard ‘all rounder’ if you were only going to have one (to start with) that has a nice amount of options? 🙂
Beautiful sounding Matt !!...although I must say that extra small screen must get very tiring ..
Between 1977 and the present (2023) and all iterations of Sequential Circuits, there have probably been 30 different synthesizer, module and drum machine models that have hit the market. Somehow, the only classic model that ever tempted me (despite the inflated pricetag) was the Prophet T8. This one is definitely pushing my temptation meter into the red. It’s not difficult, since this is a VCO polysynth (Al four that I’ve owned through the last 20 years have been DCO) with an Oberheim-style mod matrix, the aftertouch-sensitive keyboard and a pricetag that wouldn’t sink the lusitania.
With the musicians I currently play with, I tote my Korg clone of the ARP Odyssey to practice. One thing I wouldn’t mind if I knew this model could do would be to emulate the Odyssey’s limited duophonic functionality. It probably can’t, but that would be a total kick in the head to learn it could emulate. I already get the impression that it is easily capable of approximating the sound and functionality of classic performance synths by ARP and Moog.
Killer quotation of the Pointer Sisters at 14:08, Matt.
It can’t do duophonic, only 5 voices or mono
That is what I assumed. Thank you, Matt.
The rev2 is my choice(more performance features) but this is a really nice synth
REV 2 is a misunderstood and vastly underrated beast!! ❤️
I have a Prophet Rev2 keyboard and an OB6 module as well which I have been very happy with and I want to like the Take 5 too as I have seen a bunch of features for it and it seems very decent but I just can`t mentally get past the name `Take 5` as it just sounds so naff to me ! ha ha ............................... Also I believe that this is a 5 voice Synth and I don`t like voice stealing when playing pads etc that have a long release. Although it sounds steller to me I wish that I had 8 voices on my OB6 even but I can get by with 6 on it I guess.
Did you add the patch you made on this video to the pack? Its lovely!

Hey, Matt, when are you getting your Montage M8x? On some of the new vids I feel like I saw you playing one! Just ordered mine, I am in the US I don't know if they are out in the UK?... Although I am sure you would be one of the first to get one and rightly so! it looks fantastic... Just a phenomenal board.
I have played one in Berlin and hopefully yea I will be getting one! Fabulous keyboard!
Something about it reminds me of a Jupiter 6
Have a question for you Matt.
You mentioned in one of your videos that you were self taught on the keys.
What would you recommend for someone starting off in order to learn chords and get musically sounding on the right track?
Any books, online training or learning a certain range of chords that would make playing fun and exciting that you can recommend?
I don't really know as it was so long ago. I'm sure there are lots of good resources if you look around
Helpful!
I wish all companies would open up the pitch bend for other controls, it's such a waste of contol possibilities.
On my Korg minilogue XD it is possible to assign different functions. Also, because it is a stick rather tnan a wheel, you can blend them.
5:38 - 5:52 - Is this sound available in one of your patch sound sets? Just ordered a Take 5 and will be purchasing both of your sound sets (32 and 64) this week :) Thank you for the helpful video and wonderful playing/musical decisions, Matt!

That mod matrix with aftertouch is pretty unique. Would you say its similar to or like a mini oberheim xpander?
I've only briefly used the expander, Different sound but this can do a lot
Are all efx internal? They sound great...
yes all internal
Sounds Great as always! Does it have the same analog tone as the Prophet 5? I wish they would do a proper flagship analog synth. They do their museum piece quality Prophet-5 and OB-X8 for $4-5k but then they lack effects and modern features like this, when clearly they could of added them in. They make them exactly like the old ones. I want the sound of the vintage ones plus the modern features and 10-12 voices. The last one they did like that the Prophet 12 I have, although it's a hybrid digital/analog. I'd trade it up for a VCO/VCF analog updated Prophet 12.
It doesn’t sound as good in its raw sound as a P5 but as you say it has the modern features which are a big boost. I agree it would be great to see a Prophet 10

What a great time which we can directly interact with our influencers, thanks youtube, and that you Mr. Johnson, i really appreciate for all your efforts, thanks alot in advance. May i ask, with the new update, is there a way to disable or close patch remaining in Take 5? Cos i watched in some introduction videos, the patches are relasing to the next one, i mean the current patch is still playing with the next patch's settings when switch to a new patch. it is not good for live situation i believe. thank you.

They’ve just stopped making the X, too …
Great tips! Seems like a warmer sounding rev2, but more mod slots, albeit with lower voice count. Agree about vintage mode. On the OB-6 it would be nice to have voice to voice detuning, but still have super tight envelopes. Is the filter xmod as characterful as the P5?
No it's not as characterful as the P5 but a great synth in it's own right
Learn to program the REV 2 properly, using the gated sequencer, and it is plenty warm! Poor synth is so misunderstood/underrated!! 🙃
@@kierenmoore3236I did learn it very well and made some great sounding patches on it, unfortunately each one took well over an hour because of having to do stuff like diving into the gated sequencer. Same story with the Hydrasynth. So much work just to get it to a good foundation. That and the Rev2 filter is simply not for me. Trying to dial in what I want is usually achievable but it’s a slow and frustrating process. One that I don’t need to go through on other synths. The Take 5 is fundamentally more the sound that I like. I really should have one by now.
@@thesrabbit Oh, c’mon, it’s not hard at all - you can just create a template to start from whenever you like …
But yes, it’s really easy to get those sounds out of VCO synths … it’s just a lot more expensive and more limiting in many ways, to have to buy a bunch of VCO synths, each covering certain ground, than to shape them from something more capable/flexible (which is kind of the point of synthesis, in the first place, I’m pretty sure) … and it’s really not that difficult! Or, you can just grab patches from more talented programmers - there’s some great, free sites for that …
A good spread/mix of different synths is ‘best’ (most inspiring), ultimately, imho.
@@kierenmoore3236 to each their own. I don’t get on with its core tone. The filter is what it is and no amount of programming chops can change that. The guy who bought my Rev2 sent me a message through Reverb complimenting me on the patches I had made. I didn’t erase them before selling it. I don’t buy patches. I create my own from scratch and hardly ever use presets. I don’t claim to be an A-tier sound design pro (like how you’re portraying yourself), but I’m far from being a novice. Each thing I get I poke and prod until I know the ins and outs of all of it, and try to maximize its potential given its limits. That’s when sound design is the most fun and most rewarding. But with that filter on the Rev2… every patch is a battle, because Im fighting against a fundamental component of the sound that I don’t like. I sold it. No regrets. Glad you like yours.
Ive been back`n Forth - Matriarch or Take 5 ....i got the Grandmother - and i never owned a Sequencial....!? but you give , yet another good reason to change that ,- 😘
I have the GM, T5 and Matriarch … I would buy the Matriarch as a starting centrepiece as it sounds beautiful with the stereo filter and delay. As a secondary, I would likely sell the GM unless you would like something for bass duties or extra patching or the T5 as a poly/all-rounder.
If you already have the Grandmother, get the Take 5. Unless expanded semi-modular paraphonic is what you really want.
I agree with you on this. Get a different flavour 😊

Probably underrated like your 1.3K subs.
Sounds thin/bright, for a VCO/VCF synth, to me … Digital LFOs, envelopes, VCA/Amps(?), so the entire back-end (after the filter) is digital, as I understand it? Not sure if that alone explains it, or it’s the newer VCO chips used in this particular model, as well. I mean, they were working to a price point, and obviously don’t want to cannibalise their higher-end synths sales.
I wish it had six voices. I’ve been gigging my rev2 would love to take this instead cuz of the form factor
