An adult literacy tutor uses a Think Aloud strategy when preparing an adult literacy tutoring session as a way of sharing her thoughts about what words would be most useful to pull from a text to teach to an adult literacy student.
The adult literacy tutor identifies the following types of words to look for in a text to teach to an adult literacy student before the student reads the text:
• Words Not Well Defined by Context
• Words in the News
• Difficult or Unfamiliar Words
• Signal Words
• Words Not Well Defined by Context
• Words that Reinforce Word-learning Strategies
• Prefixes and Suffixes
• Compound Words
• High-Frequency Words
