De Hollandsche IJssel van Nieuwegein tot Nieuwerkerk

De Hollandsche IJssel stroomt van Nieuwegein tot Nieuwerkerk door Utrecht en Zuid-Holland. Bij Nieuwegein begint het als voortzetting van de Doorslag dat de verbinding vormt met het Amsterdam-Rijn-Kanaal en is feitelijk een oude aftakking van de Rijn. Stroomafwaarts komt het langs en door mooie stadjes en dorpen, zoals IJsselstein, Montfoort, Haastrecht, Gouda, Gouderak en Ouderkerk. Uiteindelijk mondt het uit in de Nieuwe Maas, vlak bij Rotterdam. Het stuk tussen Gouda en Rotterdam is breder en daar varen ook grotere binnenvaartschepen, die je op het stuk tussen Nieuwegein en Gouda eigenlijk niet ziet. Daar komt alleen pleziervaart.
Al met al een bezienswaardig stuk Nederland aan en op het water.

The Hollandsche IJssel flows from Nieuwegein to Nieuwerkerk through Utrecht and South Holland. At Nieuwegein it starts as a continuation of the Doorslag that forms the connection with the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and is in fact an old branch of the Rhine. Downstream it passes and through beautiful towns and villages, such as IJsselstein, Montfoort, Haastrecht, Gouda, Gouderak and Ouderkerk. It eventually flows into the Nieuwe Maas, near Rotterdam. The section between Gouda and Rotterdam is wider and larger inland vessels also sail there, which you do not actually see on the section between Nieuwegein and Gouda. There is only pleasure boating.
All in all a worth seeing part of the Netherlands besides and on the water.
