It's great to see family workin together and making it happen. That nuc yard is a beast! Congrats on such a productive season. Y'all have a blessed one.
Hello Ian, well done, those bees look great. I hope you have a really good year, you deserve it the work you put in. All the very best, kind regards to you, your family and your team. Tony Marsh, over 60 years with bees, UK.
I noticed that you’ve 5 double deep boxes ,am in the same situation but the bees are filling the bottom two boxes which are both brood boxes but the queen as no brood or room to lay, I keep giving her empty foundation ,no sooner are they waxed there being filled with honey - what would you do ,in another colony exactly the same however is Queenless or can’t find her and there’s no brood so gave it a new Queen and empty foundation they killed the Queen and filled the foundation with honey - so what best to do ? I’ve thought of almost starting again but what do I do with all the bees - start again would be two brood boxes with bees and the Queen or a new Queen ,trying out the new metal isolation / introduction frame cage
We didn’t have the weather to spend time to sort out our splits so when we got the chance we simply shook the bees down, excluder, then pulled the top boxes of whatever brood and bees that was uptop. Dropped a queen cell then crossed fingers .
8 years I've been following never remember having this problem. Guess I'm worried they didn't get enough flow to clean up for winter.. might think about running them that 3.5 hours north fatten them up on the flow up there . At least run the nuc battery up there.. heck send Carrie to live with them she hates days off
And that's why I only breed queens when everybody else moves off the island. And managing to keep my own two lines of bees. It doesn't take much. Drones from your best older queens.. all drone frames collected, brought and kept in hives made for it around the breeding station. Queens made from those special and calm ones who like a clean and polished hive.. usually difficult to shake off the frames. Or what ever you want. A little bit of book keeping about it over the years. You already have a great worker ,crew leader.. she could do it without you stressing about it. I didn't want to comment on the new genetic story. If it was like people say my bees should have 9 legs and 5 wings after 50 years of selective breeding
I…. What is the wholesale price for canola honey in Canada? I see in the US the US Ag Dept reports the wholesale canola honey in July at $1.61 to $1.85. Is that the about the same in Canada ?

I disagree. If you look at the risks a colony has to contend with and thats at any colony number/level, I would say the beekeeper is the greatest of them all. Infact i think the backyard beekeeper probably works bees at a much higher risk level than a commercial beekeeper. A commercial beekeeper understands and acts on the need for healthy bees, low varroa, low nosema, bio security and the rest.
@@linoleumbonypart385 No, they will not survive here in southern MB, but we use these lands to grow food. We use the bees to help grow and produce food. It’s important. Agricultural development is essential. I can’t believe I even need to make these arguments

Glad the splits worked out so well in the yard you didn't open the gate.

Hello Ian, what do you mean by dirty split, please?
We didn’t have the weather to spend time to sort out our splits so when we got the chance we simply shook the bees down, excluder, then pulled the top boxes of whatever brood and bees that was uptop. Dropped a queen cell then crossed fingers .
Swimming in Gold!
What do you mean when you say “dirty split”? I’m not familiar with that term but seem to hear it more recently.
As I recall, it's 3 brood frames from one or more colonies, with a queen cell dropped in and then set out by themselves in a new yard.
Well, it’s when we simply shake the bees from that second , excluder and take without sorting brood
Go go go to split before they swarm
Ian, are those insulated leather gloves that you wear?
No just old bee gloves
Harvest is that way for many many crops.....
Awesome
Are you going to produce your own queens for this years bulk splits or purchase them as a genetic diversity investment?
Not sure yet

Matter how light you end up with in the season ? What I’m asking is do you make a profit every year ? Yea or no lol
So I'm not the only one who almost dreads extraction time.

I’m not sure
Arson and caused by humans is the same thing
In Alberta last year 90% were arson cases, the other 10% were lightning.
