Prong Tightening Trick for stubborn prongs

  • quick and easy trick that works 99% of the time. No special tools needed, low risk, works on any style setting.
    The reason this works is that by pulling each prongs in parallel, you're actually nudging them at a diagonal as they work their way around the edge of the stone. So then they want to spring back at that same angle but the stone's girdle is in the way and so they remain tight. reversing the procedure on the opposite set of prongs re-aligns them. You can also do this one prong at a time, but I've found that working in pairs to be more efficient.
    The main concern is that you'll want to make sure that the pliers do not hit the girdle of your stone and possible chip the edge, so this is why a set of very fine tipped pliers works well along with good magnification.
    I do not think I can stress just how much good magnification plays into almost everything I do.
