    Fascinating collection. Interesting to see a glimpse of what the author had in his mind as he wrote a story that would inspire the imagination of millions of people.
    Plus you actually picked some inspired, appropriate music. Perhaps a first for RUclips?

    What you see in the movies and what you see sketched by Tolkien are very different. Look at Orthanc for instance.

      I prefer the movie design 😁

    • @ace9924
      @ace9924 3 года назад +1

      Orthanc was more or less faithful, pretty much most of these were in the lotr adaptations. Rivendell looks the same, hobbiton is a bit different but mostly same. One drawing that I recall is different is barad dur which looks cooler in Tolkien's drawings than in the adaptation; as it looks more sinister for some reason. Just a brick tower with evil within.

      @ace9924 3 года назад +1

      @@rsmlinar1720 we only see sauron's arm outstretched. The shadow of mordor games did the sauron look justice because he wasn't as huge like he was in the movies.

      I would say they did as best as they could in trying to be faithful to his work, when you think of the limitations of our real world and needing the actors to be able to work in these scenes, there’s only so much to be done before it’s just impossible

      well Tolkien did base it off of historical designs, especially Norse designs. This is the style that the Norse used at the height of their power in the 9th-14th Centuries. Though this would be a small example of the style: typically they had long tables between the firepit and colonnade (like the Meduseld in LotR). But there is a reconstructed Viking hall that looks *exactly* like this drawing: it is at Lanse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. Though that didn’t exist at the time Tolkien was making his drawing: which makes the resemblance all the more eerie.
