  • There were 3 main mistakes we made on our bicycle tour of Australia.
They weren't constant and we only made them on occasion, but when we did - they had a massive negative impact on our adventure.
I made this video so that hopefully you don't fall into the same 3 bicycle touring mistakes that no-one is talking about.

We'd love to hear what mistakes you guys have made out on the road - whether on your very first tour or many more down the line.
And if there are any specifics you'd like to know about our trip and the points I raised in this video, then we'd be happy to elaborate!
    Drop us a comment!

I've just returned from my first cycle tour around the North Island of New Zealand. The topics discussed in this video are on point. I would add that make sure you know how to carry out your own bicycle maintenance before you set off. You don't want to have to learn how to repair a broken chain on the road.

      Absolutely right!
I think the more knowledge you can arm yourself with - the better! I'm not saying you need to be a professional bike mechanic, but I do find it alarming how many people are out there with zero ability to fix any part of their bike. Again, glad they're out there - but it seems pretty risky to me!
Thanks for commenting! Glad you agreed with the points!

The don't rush is sooo important; including don't overlook the photo ops. A picture is worth a thousand words........

      100%
One of my few regrets is that we didn't stop and take the time to take proper photos!
      Cheers!

Nice one, Dave & Bonnie! I had to laugh, when you mentioned times of departure; on the Tassie trip in '68, I noted in my cyclists' diary our departure time each day! Latest one was leaving Port Arthur; that was 11.10am!! It was cold that morning and, as we'd arrived after dark, we wanted to have a bit of a look around and take some photos.

      Haha, perfect!
I lost track of how many times we agreed to be on the road at 6am and then sheepishly rolled out of camp at 9:30! 😅

Great points. I suppose the budget side of things may be easier for me being retired. I'm glad you mentioned it though.
1 & 3 can be related...I found that early on. I use the term when on a trip now, I have no particular place to be, and all day to get there. Over planning and rushing just makes you want to end the trip.
Most of my planning was based on communication with my family. The Garmin Inreach Mini has changed that.
    Great vid mate 👍

Yeah, thankfully we didn't rush the whole trip nor plan the entire thing, but there were a couple of stints where the two were hand in hand the whole way. Things will be much more loose in future!
I heard you say that in a video and loved it. It's such a good saying!
I'm also looking into a Garmin InReach or similar. Will see what happens.
      Thanks for commenting, mate!
      Cheer!

@VeloObscura sattelite messengers are great for peace of mind. Sometimes you have to rush, you have no choice. But again, that is easier for me. I'm not usually on a time frame, except when we are selling house and moving 🤣

@@OldBumOnABike - Yeah, I'd like one for the tracking more than the comms. It would be great to give people a link to a page that shows my location.... and obviously the SOS button for peace of mind!

Wrong tyres! Oh that's a painful mistake. Either because they're not puncture proof enough, or because they're too narrow and uncomfortable on the corrugated roads.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  10 месяцев назад +1

Oh yes. Shitty tyres for a shitty time. 😅
Doing a long gravel stretch with a loaded bike must suck on 25mm tyres!

Unfortunately longer videos aren't possible right now and especially with videos of this format, but there will be longer videos in the future! 😁
