The old meets the new. By using ancient African polyrhythmic patterns, and applying them to the modern day Roland VDrums, Don Swanson demonstrates these beautifully complex rhythms that date back 1000 years. Видеоклипы
not bad for a 1000 year old
1000 ิback people played much complex then now
So prog is essentially 1000 years old!
Kenny Gates if every year only had 10 days in it then that would be ironic. I hope you get the reference.
This reminds me a lot of how Danny Carey play the drums.
this is beautiful and completely underrated. this should be mainstream. this music touches my soul. it makes me want to do an African Dance and reconnect with the same things my ancestors did. Thank you for this music.
Mama Africa....you are brilliant polyrhythm guy....thank you
Nice to see some people actually practice and then keep practicing. Excellent.
Been drumming for a long time and this is one of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen. So moving....
Thanks for taking the time to let me know you got inspired by it! THAT inspires me right back! ;-)
That's awesome Pad, thank you very much! I'm getting together next week with a Nigerian drum master to work out an acoustic version as a duo. I will post it once it's done. Thanks again for the kind words.
dude this is fucking sick
So awesome! I wouldn't be able to do that for 3 seconds, I couldn't imagine the skill needed for this
One of my favorite RUclips videos, powerful polyrythmic composition.
Thank you PolyrhythmUniverse! With a name like that, you obviously must have a real appreciation for Polyrhythms. Please spread it around, and thanks again!
Your multi-limb independency is amazing!
That's awesome! I wish I had that kind of indipendence!
Very nice demonstration Sir. Thank you for sharing this.
Incredible! Thanks for sharing!
this is stunning wow i can't remember that i was ever touched this much by a single drumming performance, every modern musician should get into polyrythmic
you're out of control. awesome man!!!!!!!!!!!!
You fucking killed it bro, good job and much appreciation for this masterpiece
Sean,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, you're right, it is truly endless, and although these 6/8 patterns are not common to Western music in general, they still helped me tremendously; not just in a technical standpoint, but also in helping me to develop my own voice in playing contemporary music. Enjoy your journey!
love your work!
Fantastic !!
This dudes nice
Interesting ...
Luke Maeli In what way?
Wow! That was brilliant! Makes me want to jump behind my kit right now and start creating!
Play more man! I love it
Thank you for the inspiration Don!!!! Absolutely Beautiful :)
Damn.. this is absolutely amazing
holy hell ...finally someone who understands the point of a drum set. Would have preferred to hear it using acoustic drums though but still rhythmically it's refreshing.
Hey Hoopy,
Odd time? My formative years were progressive rock. I'd have to say Billy Cobham with the Mahavishnu Orchestra is my favorite in that department. I don't go there too much these days, preferring things less cerebral, but that's cool. Thanks man!
That was beautiful! I logged onto youtube to find something inspiring before I sit down to practice. This was exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find. Thanks for sharing. There is so much to be done with the layering of rhythms. It's truly endless!
Oh wow. This is incredible. I've been experimenting with my own polyrhythmic drumming and this is incredible to watch!!!
Yaaaa baby fainly
just great!!!
I've never seen a independence like this.. You're so good at playing!! And this video is showing the very creative way of using the V-drums.
Very inspiring stuff really..
This is just mind-blowingly awesome. Would pay for a whole DVD of this.
Phenomenal, I felt like shit before watching this and now I think ima do my daily 4 mile run.
I want Tomas Haake and Danny Carey to watch this video
I was thinking the exact same thing.
My love of Danny Carey is what made my look up African drum rhythms lol
Great flowing 6-8 feeling does the foundation and I love how the polyrhythms help entice the feeling the pulse great job
Bro. U got the skills man. Keeping several beats going. U go crazy good skills. Admiration my friend
Very nice!
Thanks Jonathan,
Unfortunately I don't have this notated but thanks for the kudos!
This is amazing
AMAZING!!!!!!! good hell my brain just exploded what talent!
great stuff!
Sihplak - Thank you! Apparently you're very knowledgeable in percussion patterns, and I'm glad to see you took the time to really analyze it. Yes, the snare is the "solo" drum played in an improvisational style, but actually each of those snare patterns had to be played and practiced many times before I could do each one, and then string them together. Have fun, that's what counts!
gran solo, felicidades!
Crazy impressive
Well excellent Independence it's so much going on there show me different places you can modulate to polyrhythmic great cross rhythms thank you so much
This is very nice stuff.
You sir are a bad ass!
mind fully boggled!
I enjoyed this video.
Thank you!
awesome played,, innovative
Thanks man. I'm working on an acoustic version I hope to have up soon!
thank esta muy guapo !!!
Nice!!
Ohmg whew i saw electric drums i thought it will be crap, but you blow up my mind, its real African patterns,
dfq is going on?
Wow!!!!
Yes I have TD10 Expanded TDW-1. Need to update. You played it at my house in Carlsbad
AHHH this is so fuckin groovy! Thank you!
Damn it
Just keeping track of such rich, complex music is difficult, so I can't even imagine playing it, plus you kept everything nice and tight, kudos! Do you play anything in odd time rhythms? I'd love to hear you play something if you do.
Not possible for one human to do that, that's 4 different people reaching from out of shot to play each rhythm individually.
Amazing
Africa!!
this decadian x decadian ahead of his time
Thanks Peter,
I really like the sound of the African drums Roland came up with. I practice with that set about 1/3 of the time, then 1/3 custom drum set (the best I can make it sound), lastly 1/3 various stuff. Are you using Roland as well?
Amazing! love it! Is there any way you could provide notes for the hi-hat action you do? Thanks!
This is excellent, great work. Do you have any material on this? I'd love to learn it.
Now just imagine how good it would sound on actual drums.
I am thirsty for a written sheet of that adventurous drum movements...
What advise can you give for working up to independence like that? Great job!
This feels a bit more like a highly syncopated 6/4 pattern than specifically polyrhythmic; I don't hear any odd sets of tuplets within the measures or groups, rather I hear just odd phrases (5/8+7/8 on your hi-hat pedal for a 12/8 pattern, or 6/4. Bass drum doing the most notably polyrhythmic pattern of a 3:2 with the dotted quarter based pattern, tom patterns being generally set up as a 6/8 kind of feel, with the utilization of the bass drum pattern to help keep the rhythm steady. The most odd parts come with the snare drum almost acting as a melody in this case, playing a pattern that doesn't sound quite like an ostinato, with fast syncopation independent of everything else. This is all very impressive though.
I LOVE THIS DEMONSTRATION BUT I MISS A NOTATION! is there any possibility to get a transcription of that?
I know this video is older now, but I'm just stumbling onto it now. Absolutely wonderful playing and arrangement. If you happen to read this Don, do you have any books you can recommend to me to start learning rythms like this? I would greatly appreciate it. Amazing playing once again.
thanks for the kind words! Honestly, I just bought several different African Polyrhythm books and went through them. Then I picked some of my favorites and personalized it. I'm left handed playing on a right handed kit, so I applied the "solo" patterns with my stronger left hand on the snare. Best of luck and have fun!
I'm sorry to bother you again. But could you please give me the names of those books? I would really like to learn. Thank you.
I hear this and think I shouldn't be allowed to buy a pair of sticks.
Don, You lost me with the left foot pattern alone. Well done. The drums sound nice. The bass drum pedal had a forward-back wiggle dealing with the V-bass drum. Didn't phase you.
How do you even....
I sincerely doubt that people from Africa had a rhythm notation system one thousand years ago, so we don't know what they did actually play in that times.
Thanks! Apparently Horaknophobia does NOT mean "fear of video sharing". Spread it around!

Here's a new polyrhythmic video.
3 people who have never played the drums decided to weigh in.
That looks extremely difficult. I play drums but I would fail at that
they would have been disappointed in most of today's drum patterns
meshuggah!
Is this on Spotify?
Pro tip: Spark a fatty and listen at 75% speed
Transcription, please!

Can we get the score?
I haven't written it down, although maybe I should? Thanks!
Is that you Mahammmed.
Thanks Tim! Are you a drummer?
lol
Damn , I just ran out in the woods and killed a dear with my bare hands ...
Al Cervix why would you kill someone you love?
Danny Carey is jealous
I thought that only mangini can play polyrhitym
