I watched that bonamassa video two days ago and that exact lick totally blew my mind...and now you come along and transcribe it. Guess it's my lucky day.
Dude, I love your videos. Every one that I've watched so far breaks everything down systematically and is made with such patience and quality. Please do keep it up, theyve been incredibly inspirational.
Completely agree with your way of approaching guitar learning and philosophy to get better. Keep at it Paul, thoroughly enjoy your videos and the high quality of your work.
Honestly this made me feel better about myself, I always feel like I take so long to piece something together. But seeing him struggle a bit and even repeat the same lick over and over again because he was making the same mistake. All things I do. Thanks
I really appreciate this because it helps give me hope when I feel in a rut while playing knowing there are players 100X better than me but we all are learning and getting better and take time to learn new stuff
The GOAL when learning other peoples' licks is to improve your own skill. The TASK is simply to learn the licks themselves. The TASK is simply a vessel for the GOAL to be accomplished.
Great tone here Paul! I know seeing the video probably helps a lot too but man, my hat's off to you on how quickly you worked out the lick. It's very speedy indeed. I'm nowhere near your level but if I were to give a tip on getting better at playing guitar, I would tell people to learn a new chord. It usually helps me write a new song after I learn a new chord and really can incorporate it into my playing easily.
I learned to play before RUclips by using cassette tape, listening to a second or two, stopping, rewinding until I got it, and then the next few notes. My first big one was Mick Taylor "Sympathy for the Devil" live on Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. Then some Clapton, "Sunshine of Your Love", Page, "Stairway to Heaven" solo. The craziest one was Larry Carlton on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne". I also learned a Wes Montgomery solo, I think it was "4 by 6", using a transcription with no fingerings, so I had the notes, but to figure out how the fingerings could fall. It's all the same as this, minus the technology. Great way to learn, much better than being spoonfed.
Hello Paul! Greetings from Madrid! I just wanted to let you know that I have been watching a ton of your videos and I have to tell you that I have been learning and improving my playing too. I wanted to enroll in your guitar course and I couldn’t because of my economic situation right now 😂 but even though I wanted to let you know that I have learned a lot of music theory, I learned how to construct the major and minor scales, the major and minor pentatonic in all keys (which were a mistery before). I also learned the caged system which is helping me understand chords relation and theory even more. Hopefully I will be able to enter a course in the future, but in the mean time I just wanted to let you know that your videos do help a lot, and also I want to congratulate you because the quality of the material is increasing and improving day by day. Thanks man! 🤙🏻🔥
Thank you for this video of your process. RUclips’s slow down and loop features look helpful - but I wondered what software you use for writing the notation. Thanks again, Richard
you have done the same for me just recently, great video with the 7000 dollar guitar, the "nobody knows you, when your down and out" thanks for inspiring me to learn something new, now i got it and im working on accents on the jam.. thanks and as always keep safe.
Hey man. What application are you using for transcribing and are you still using it? Have you found something better? The interface looks solid. Kick ass video man. Been coming back to your videos often. Keep it up!
Very nice! That's a important tip 'If you like it. Figure it out'. It's a good way to develop earing and writing music. Hey Paul, please make a video with that new guitar. Cheers!
He's definitely doing something Eric Johnson does a lot in his Ah Via Musicom album... not to say I'm as brave as you at attempting this particular lick, lol. (Though after this video, maybe I should at least try it.) You're a top shelf guitarist for sure. Rock on!
I guess that the gear you need is : Fingers , a guitar that sounds well , having fun when you're playing, trying to find the best shapes for your fingers and go on
I find that with riffs or licks that I get them quicker by practicing them for a few minutes and then just leaving it for an hour or so and then a few minutes and leave it for an hour or so. It comes to me faster than slogging away for an hour straight and I can fit something else in between.
This was one of my favorite videos! I assume sometimes for some reason, that pro guitar players like yourself can hear something and just immediately repeat it back. It's nice to see that you have to go through the same thing as I when learning something new. Also, what tab software are you using? That was really nice!
Just to let you know... Your brain is starting the learning process AFTER you finish playing and go to rest. Here is a trick that i use when i have to perform suddenly or when i have to learn fast * Play the specific thing you are learning for NO MORE than 10 minutes. After EVERY 10 min of playing/practise, you leave your guitar, and go take a beer or a caffe or something, lose 3-4 minutes like that doing completely different thing from music, and go back to play, and see what happens, and how much faster you learn like that. Pauses are the most important thing while practising guitar. Try it :) Tho, i think lots of you already know this, and you have your own variations and combinations of this "technique", but this is for those who do not know this or are beginers. Cheers Guys
It doesn't matter how good you get at guitar - I've put insane numbers of hours/years into it. Only a very few people can perform live and they know very quickly that they'll be able to do it. If you're not playing live and getting good responses in one year then it's likely that you never will.
Hi Paul, Great video explaining your thought process in unlocking visual riff. Could you do something similar to explain the thought process for playing by ear to jam with an audio file, i.e finding the key of the song and suitable scales to experiment with? Sorry but I might have missed it if you covered it before). On side not, what is that deep groove loop(song?) you have entering at 1.59, its sweet!?
Sleep! Sleep is a big part of this. You can practice and practice and practice and get _almost_ there but not quite. But I find after sleeping, sometimes things just "click" the next day, as if it's been committed to your muscle memory.

It is actually very comforting to know that even a guitar player of your magnitude has to put in these kinds of effort and hours to get it, yes having talent and a natural predisposition helps, but you still got to put in the work!
When it comes to musics, a lot of people see the finished product and to them it seems like magic. But what they don't see is how many hours of work went into making that magic. It wasn't always perfect like how they perform on stage.
Matthew: Hendrix only started playing at 15, so I reckon your friend must be mistaken! Even at the peak of his fame Hendrix was notorious for practicing a hell of a lot. He once said that he was afraid people would stop coming to his gigs if he didn't practice. One bandmate relates seeing Jimi cooking a fried egg breakfast with his guitar already strapped on. The best encouragement a beginner guitarist can get from Jimi's story is how good you can get by practicing intensively for three or four years (that's at least 5 hours a day, if not 15). Too bad Jimi only got twelve years to play before he died.
I would really love to see your guitar progress as a 1 million special. You could include things like how you have started, what your inspiration was, how much you practiced every day and which songs you learned. Also what kind of guitar exercises you did. I think that would really help a lot of people (me included) to see what the next step in guitar playing is for everybody.
OK, I just realized that this is an old video and Paul's well past the 1 million subs now... haha... I'll have to see what kind of video he put out :-)

There are no shortcuts to getting better except "put in the hours". For the technical bits for beginners: Get software that lets you easily loop parts, isolate parts, and speed up or slow down parts or entire songs. I myself use Audacity for this. And then you can easily repeat bits to figure out the notes. Write those notes down. Pen & paper works but for software I recommend Guitar Pro (as also shown in this video). Then you can either play along directly from Guitar Pro OR load up the song in Audacity. Lower the tempo and practice until it's comfortable. Then up the tempo and practice until it's comfortable, repeat until required speed is reached. I've used this method for years. With my old band we wrote songs (midi) that we literally were unable to play and simply practiced until we could. Some songs took literal months before we got to a level where we could record them on clicktrack. It's frustrating. It's (sometimes literal) blood, sweat, and tears. But that moment you nail that song for the very first time... That's the high that keeps me coming back for more.
Not too hard if you practice enough, im not quite up to speed yet but im almost there. Thats just the intro though, the whole song is a whole other beast....
@@tigerchuu2148 I've managed to learn the whole song, and the Live in Austin variant also. I really wanna post it, but my Fender has been away in their workshop for over 3 months now :'(
Great video Paul - i've gone as far as downloading an mp3 of RUclips videos, using Amazing Slow Downer and dropping down to 25% speed to figure out licks. Considering I was using a half speed tape recorder (that dropped the pitch) when I was younger, I'm so thankful for digital technology lol.
You should check out Riffstation. Will change speed, set loops for playback and will figure out some really rudimentary chord changes. It's free for the time being, I think Fender is in the process of absorbing them.
So you're telling me to learn your licks by ear instead of supporting you on Patreon and getting the tabs there? Just joking, amazing content as always!
You have to put efforts! If you're a quick learner, you might do it in 1 hour. If you're a slow learner you might do it in 2 hours. But you won't do it unless you put in the efforts, no matter how good or bad you are!
"If you hear something you want to play, figure it out." Thank you for this advice, I am now a #1 guitarist in the world, when asked by reporters the secret to my success I said, "Paul told me to figure it out, so I did." Stunned faces, every time.
I think you're just having fun, but in case you are being sarcastic... I think he means INSTEAD of just WISHING you could play something, take the time to figure it out. It took him a lot of work and he's 17 million times better than I am.
I'm glad to see that you are not the guitar god that I think you are but actually a hard working musician who puts in the effort to sound like a guitar god to my ears! keep up the good work man. Keeping me inspired here to play everyday
Great video and great advise. It's always nice and inspiring to see this kind of thing - we're always use to seeing guitarists showing a finished and fully practiced piece, so actually seeing someone else going through similar practice routines and having to actually learn something makes it a little easier to not be so hard on yourself.
This is so underrated. So many guitarists rely on tabs. Music is a language. You don't learn a language by sitting down and learning the rules of grammar, you learn to speak by being immersed, copying what you hear and understanding the context in which you heard it, and learning to apply it in different contexts.
You are just crazy!! When I try a much easier lick I stop after 10 minutes because and think, that I^m not coming further and even if I'm playing longer I don't manage to get those licks good. Do you have any other tips than just playing and playing? And on which program do you write down the tabs?
Thank you. Most artists seem to be afraid to let people look behind the curtain and just present the result. Btw, my process on this is very similar, only that i would download the video and slow down using reaper, since its slow down algorithm is way better. Oh, and it would take ar least three days for me to make that progress.

Paul May I ask what colour your les Paul is? Is it a cherry? Or perhaps iced tea? I love it. I’m looking for a les Paul myself but am torn over many things (50’s vs 60’s, colour, etc...). Oh and I suck as a guitar player but I’ve always wanted one. Now that I’m a little older (ok a LOT older) I can afford the guitar I’ve wanted since I was a kid. Thanks Paul. I love your channel.
the lesson here is; guys, start fig stuff out. try with simple songs. And don't always use tabs, until absolutely necessary! I'm telling you from my personal experience. Figure stuff out, use your ear. And you'll train both your ear and yourself!
I decided to take on the same challenge. I gave myself one full hour, and I happily report I can play the E-minor chord.

Its comforting seeing that even great guitarists like Paul still need to put in the work to see results. That should be everyone's takeaway.
It’s cool watching someone who is amazing at guitar, struggle like a beginner with a lick. Shows me that there is hope
I'm glad to see that you are not the guitar god that I think you are but actually a hard working musician who puts in the effort to sound like a guitar god to my ears! keep up the good work man. Keeping me inspired here to play everyday
A guitar god IS a hardworking musician
love it, the Les Paul too, Pauls Les Paul!
Nice vid. Kinda push me to start to do the same, thanks!
Practice practice practice!
whats the name of the software you use to write down the lick?
Learn G.O.A.T. pleeeease! You're the man! Keep em' coming!
CrackingTheGlobe yesss Polyphia
Paul, thanks for the insight into your methods on that. One question what tabbing software do you use please? As I couldn't read it on the screen.
Guitar pro :) but there are many alternatives, it really doesn't matter!

You should play Impossible Germany (Wilco) on a Video.
At 0:44 I was like what!? Haha 😂

Rudy Ayoub i know right 😂
You are just crazy!! When I try a much easier lick I stop after 10 minutes because and think, that I^m not coming further and even if I'm playing longer I don't manage to get those licks good. Do you have any other tips than just playing and playing?
And on which program do you write down the tabs?
Looks like Guitar Pro 7.

Thank you. Most artists seem to be afraid to let people look behind the curtain and just present the result.
Btw, my process on this is very similar, only that i would download the video and slow down using reaper, since its slow down algorithm is way better.
Oh, and it would take ar least three days for me to make that progress.
David - reaper? Is that what is called do I just type reaper on google?
I needed this video so much

Paul May I ask what colour your les Paul is? Is it a cherry? Or perhaps iced tea? I love it. I’m looking for a les Paul myself but am torn over many things (50’s vs 60’s, colour, etc...).
Oh and I suck as a guitar player but I’ve always wanted one. Now that I’m a little older (ok a LOT older) I can afford the guitar I’ve wanted since I was a kid.
Thanks Paul. I love your channel.

What are you planning for a million subs?
Love the way you interpret it.lrecently subscribe your Chanel. You are rocking..
the lesson here is; guys, start fig stuff out. try with simple songs. And don't always use tabs, until absolutely necessary! I'm telling you from my personal experience. Figure stuff out, use your ear. And you'll train both your ear and yourself!
Key is practice practice practice!
I love your exercises. For those who are already better than the best, find a malmsteen video crank it to 2x and then figure out the notes.
This is the way i learnt the evil morty tune from your video last week!
Loved that JB video, cracking lick as well - great job Paul as ever!!
