1992 Cadillac Fleetwood - Misfire, Rough Idle, Poor MPG (Shorted Injectors)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 ноя 2024
- This is typical of early GM fuel injectors (multec-1). On the 2.8L, 3.1L and 3.3L group fired systems, one shorted injector will cause a no start! On the sequential engines, like on this Cadillac, misfiring and rough idle is the typical complaint. Be aware of replacement parts and the characteristic differences you will see in a current ramp waveform. For you scope guys out there, this type of thing can have you barking up the wrong tree.

If not using the snapon scope and you don't use attenuator, will it damage the scope or just make the readings worthless ?
Mr. Danner I love the content, however, as a guy who's been watching your videos for a long time, the new over usage of editing it making the video super jittery, cutting to the next clip or scene every 5 seconds is making me dizzy, also the darker cinematic effect is making things feel like im high watching this or am wearing sunglasses in my house lol I kinda miss the raw natural vibe from your earlier videos, yea keep the HQ 1080p and everything but the over polishing is unnecessary, that's not why we fell in love with your videos, its your expertise and ability to teach, please understand this is not a knock on you or your son's abilities obviously he's become a pro with the software and kudos to him for that.. but its kinda like the original texas chainsaw massacre that was gritty, raw , almost made you feel like "is this real?" vs todays versions where its so prefect and clean and everyone is a model with oil of olay commercial perfect skin that it's not scary anymore... if that makes any sense cool... at the least take it into consideration , thanks for your time...peace
@@HOTRODRICO definitely great feedback and this is something Caleb and I have been actively discussing. Some of these are absolutely necessary to same a TON of time in the final production, but the overuse can be distracting to some. You will see less of what you are describing probably starting in July or August of this year! Others were saying the same. As for the lighting. That is my brothers shop. We are actively looking for an upgraded lighting system for him to help no only him but with our videos. So there is no cinema effect here that we are going for. Just bad lighting. We WILL do better! Really appreciate you and this comment. We will do better! I promise!
That little dance to the car alarm 😂 Caleb is an artist.
I worked for Cadillac in the 90s and 2000, that 4.9L is a great motor
High production value, amazing product and systems knowledge, AND the importance of tooling. What more can you ask for?
Love this!
I'm not even a mechanic anymore, I gave up on that field in early 03. Yet I still enjoy the diagnosis - I worked with so many part changing monkeys
Clan Danner: Great video - thank you!
Caleb - great camera work
Paul - great explanations
James - great hair (as always!)
God bless
Paul (in MA)
Loved your explanation of why you wanted to see a ramp instead of a straight shot up on the scope. This is the type of education you can't get from parts changers. Love learning details like this. I have a little bit of background knowledge on electrical but know very little about cars. Videos like these help to fill in the gaps so to speak and demonstrate to me how electrical theory is applied in automotive diagnostics.
Wow! These post editings are awesome! Nice job Caleb! Love it
Glad you like them!
Video Grand Master Caleb deserves a raise in pay.
The edits and overlays adds big time to the educational content. 👍🏻
Great to hear
Good waveform patterns are priceless
This is a great little video. Good refresher regardless of the age of the vehicle. We have had a heat wave over here in the UK and I haven’t touched an engine in about 4 weeks, all my workshop is full of is window regulator issues and door locks with electrical gremlins.
I love you Danner! You're my repair hero!! If only every city had a dinner like you. I'm rooting for you!!
Awsome Video!
I take my hat off for you guys for being there for us to learn.
Thank you!
This reminds me of my first shorted injectors problem about 15 years ago.
1994 Chevy Lumina 3.1.
It ran great while cold. As it got to operating temperature it would miss under load and longer it ran worse the miss would get.
I was convinced that it was the ignition system...
We all lost sleep on this one for a few days but eventually got it figured out.
3 out of 6 injectors were shorting out.
We ended up swapping out all 6 and never saw the lumina again.
Happy diagnosing to all!
Mr. Danner , back in the late 70's early 80's Cadillac made I believe it was a Fleetwood with a 500 c.i with rocker arms actuated by electric solenoids where depending on the speed it would work on 4 or 6 or 8 cylinders, boy that was some challenge back then, great video thanks that brought me back to 3rd year apprentice days
That was a 368 8-6-4 early 80s
1980 was the only year for the V8-6-4 used across the board, until the HT4100 was introduced in 1981. The Limousines held onto the V8-6-4 until 1984. It was 368 CID, same basic big block as the 472/500/425. Good, bulletproof engines, all of them.
I salute you SD, your stuff is making me a diagnostician. I request you share more from the premium channel. Am Patrick , a technician from Uganda
I'll give you access for awhile Patrick. Take a screen shot of this conversation and email me at support@scannerdanner.com
Congrats on the 300K subs milestone guys. I like these Sat night/Sunday morning premiers, I get a chance to join in the chat, and watch 'em as soon as they hit YT. Nice one Caleb, I love the flashing lights and Cat/Danner Dance edits at the start..lol🤣👍🇦🇺
I see the Nissan 300zx 🤩 I hope you might show it more. I enjoyed watching the road trip you guys took to get it.
Great Video Paul, I especially like how you and Danner interact, the way you respect each others opinions and solve problems. Keep up the great work !!
Great teacher and a great video editor/ videographer. I love learning what you teach
Laugh out loud Amateur hour. Caleb is killing it with the editing. The thumbnail is hilarious you guys are awesome absolutely love the shop and it's so good to see a Cadillac on the channel. My grandfather used to have one of these Cadillacs, as a little boy I would set this alarm off all the time. Now I know why.... it was never my fault it was the car's fault laugh out loud!!!!! AWESOME INSTRUCTION!!!!!!! YOUR older brother is Hilarious i love it.
Thanks so much Scott. Having an interaction with my son and my brother on camera has really changed they way my videos flow. Then of course my son Caleb is the master in editing these days :-) So glad you approve. Some people miss my old videos but whatever, I love being with my family and it just comes out naturally in the videos these days
Thanks for the video Caleb , and thanks for teaching Scanner Danner, and saludos to brother Danner
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill recently had a bunch of codes and truck would not go out of Reduced engine power. Took me a few hours but I found the Green spot tug test and it snapped thank you Danner I was about to give up.Learning is power.God Bless.
Caleb’s thumbnails are getting better and better. Nothing like giving your pops a hard time over anything you can…..hahaha. Good to see an older ride in the mix. Caddy service CCR is Comp CONTROLLED Ride……when it works it’s awesome…..when it works….
When it worked 🤣 good info thanks! I'll be sure Caleb see this too
most of them I replaced shorted injectors on, were all shortly after a water pump failure/coolant leak and running hot, not enough to blow head gaskets/warp heads, but they always killed the middle fuel injectors, then they'd run a bit rough until overheating the ECM drivers and die until cooled off.
the first time I ran into that, I nearly replaced the ECM thinking it was bad! almost a parts cannon fail, except I recalled an older TBI, injector coil going bad and killing ecm, which I did replace without checking injector. fortunately back then it was easy as junkyard pulling one and chip swapping. I lost a whole $40 I think lol
This is why you're video's are absolute GOLD 💯
Thank you for everything Paul!
Thank you my friend!
They got you the wrong wire a couple times, but that didn't confuse you one bit. Thanks for sharing.
Superb, Love it Thanks for sharing SD👍, the intro was Awesome, great work Caleb👍
Love the discussion between James Danner & SD, you guy's are Awesome😎
Special thanks to James Danner & Caleb👍
Stay Safe Guy's❤
Man, I gotta say, whoever is doing these video edits (guessing kaleb) is a genius pro editor, that intro feels like it's from a high end movie !
Caleb is a creative genius.
I would like to see more 1980-1990 epic cars diag on the channel. I am working on 1988 Mazda b2000 truck and i like simplicity of it. Thanks Paul.
Dan the scanner man, love your videos and the many things i've learned from many a watch.
Great video guys as always and by the way, have not herd that ccr(Computer Controlled Ride) code in a long, long time goes to show how old i am LOL.Have a Great week everyone.
Awesome intro Caleb! Even better when Paul gets frustrated 🤣🤣🤣
Man have I done a bunch of those injectors! It’s getting challenging to find a good set now, all the brands that make replacements nowadays are pretty much a time bomb waiting to happen!
Thanks for the vid Paul. It's another reason to get all the info from the customer when diagnosing.
Video quality is next level Paul. Great work
THis is stuff you learn in Electrical Engineering.
Nice video and the editing keeps getting better and better. I was glad to see the Verus in this video. I just bought a Verus of EBay and can’t wait to get it. I signed up to the premium channel and did watch all the basics and Verus classes so far.
Awesome! Are you Cullen there too? I think we've spoken. But thanks so much either way!
@@ScannerDanner Yes, same user name
Great information on waveforms, great video all together. Tell Caleb he is doing a great job editing and adding all the extras!! Thanks for alk you guys do.
man this helps out so much, learning and understand what and how to look at the waveforms is impressive.. i have the pico 4425A standard kit and i love it.. just wanting to use it more and learn more... I seriously need to order scanner danners book !

The editing is on point nice work Caleb
Proof that the best mechanics are still mechanics!
Awesome video Paul and Caleb thank you …now I gotta go back to reading your Book …great information here Paul !
Thank you so much!
Awesome video again Danners. The style of videos has changed but the educational content stays the same.....Its always been great. The family interaction is great but also the "real world" diagnosing. Mistakes get made and things don't always go to plan and showing that in your videos is one of the things that make them great, plus it gives Caleb some great content to get creative lol.
This comment really means a lot. Thank you!
And I know you've been with me a long time, so you would know for sure.
Brought back memories. I had one of these for a bit fresh out of high school. I remember having to put fuel injectors in it. Did all 8 myself.
Btw CCR is the electronic suspension. Probably has bad drivers on the struts.
I’ve always wanted a Cadillac like that
The more things change the more they stay the same. Awesome video. Thanks for all you do and congrats on 300K subs. Well deserved !!
Enjoyed that guys. Nice to see Tommy popping up in the chat. We miss your videos Tommy.
we're bring some of Tommy's stuff to premium, he is awesome for sure, thank you my friend
I’m sure you’re proud to have been a part of Tommy’s development history. Look forward to seeing the videos on Premium.
I was about to say I don’t know wassup with these failing injectors here lately. I just had a Honda Accord today that absolutely mopped the floor with me. ( I really wasnt expecting a bad injector to be honest) Great video Danner! I didn’t understand the ground stacking portion too much ( it was a quick shot so I missed what you were doing)
the extra ground lead on the yellow channel, it is meant to hang and that is where your other channels ground to, NOT the scope. Make sense? Nice to hear from you too my friend! It's been awhile. Hope you and your family are well. God bless
very good lession like always, thanks for sharing
awesome intro and beat!
great content as always!
Great content ! Wish you were located in Texas.😁 I'm learning alot from your videos . I appreciate you for educating us .
Great vid! Love it when u use the Snap On. Great that it doesn’t need an attenuator.
good seeing you SD great intuation scope work thanks
OOOHHHHHH Congratulations on 300 K Subs!!!!And also..thank you for awesome video, and the alarmgoingoff section editing...hahah that cracked me up.You are the EditMan, Caleb :) One thing...how would the resistance in these injectors that are failing look like? would they be within spec , internal resistance wise? Greetings from theNorwegianViking,Stefan :)
They will drop in resistance as they fail. 12.6 ohms is the spec. That one that was near 10 amps would have measured around 1-2 ohms.
But sometimes these would only fail when they got hot, so measuring resistance can look near normal when they are cold. Also the current flow acts as the heat im talking about too. It stresses the windings where an ohmmeter does not.
But you should be able to catch most with just an ohmmeter
This Man is the best teacher awesome
This is a bad man at his game 💯🔥
Excellent content as always Sir , thank you so much !
congratulations for 300k subscribers
I've actually dealt with this before, and I found it by ohm ing out the injectors. 2 injectors were hogging all the pulse. No start. BUT it WOULD RUN on carb cleaner. (group fire. 3.1 Chevy Camaro) MTBE in the fuel ruined a TON of GM injectors
On my 1987 , 2.8 L , the injectors are buried under the intake plenum . I checked the ohm reading through the harness on each group of three . The actual problem was a sticking EVAP Purge Solenoid . It is pulsed and would stick open . It was intermittent and created a low vacuum condition and loss of power . I plugged the hoses to verify .
Awesome info. Now only if I had the equipment to do it. Lol I could test my 2011 5.3l GMC for all my missing problems. I know my aftermarket coil packs go bad, but still have bad mpg on highway.
How bad is it to admit that even though I’ve owned the car for years I still can never find the hood latch on the 1st try
Only the 1993 DeVille has the hood release latch under the passenger side grille (1991 to 1993 models).
Wld love to buy that car gorgeous, older cars hv so much more curb appeal
Good work on this unit. Good humor and a great attitude towards this industry and I'm sure your students at college. I still would have liked all 8 the same but what can you do. Interesting to see the differences on the scope.
Thank you man and for your brother and son
It seems like injectors are a pretty common issue now on those DeVille’s. I just changed the injectors out on mine. A fun job indeed. Lol
Also ironically, I too have an alarm problem. However my security light continuously flashes with doors shut and unlocked and stays solid when doors are locked. Normally it’s supposed to extinguish five seconds after.
Also, if you need any reference material I own the entire factory service manual for it. It’s like 4 inches thick.
Thanks for the video!
Life is a learning curve!
HINDSIGHT is 20-15!
20-15 is right lol
The one on the back is causing the bulk of the problem. If it was your own personal car, you could probably get away with just replacing that one. But we all know how that will come back to bite you in the ass on a CUSTOMER's car if you try and save them some money lol. Good stuff
Great video. Thanks for sharing
the most amazing part of it all was that the computer driver wasn't damaged .That injector was drawing 10 times the current it should have been and it just switched it on and off like normal.
Good looking dodge in the back ground
Love these caddy's
Another great video. Thanks
One of my customers has one of these, same color, with a 4.9 V8 and it's had so many issues. It's a rust belt car from da U.P. so it's already had all the fuel lines and brake lines replaced. It hauls ass but it's not as nice as a rear wheel drive Lincoln Town Car.
Wow. You are gifted and sharp as a tack. Love the lesson. Greek but I follow you. Is a 1998 Northstar known for injector shorts??? Thx
Thank you my friend. No the 98 would have multec-2 injectors, the multec-1 was known for shorting, the multec-2 is known for sticking closed lol
I'm from Europe. But this car is awesome ! 🍺 🍺
I have a 1990 flertwood with the same issue and now I can go back to the dealer with this info.
Seems once the car starts cold it shudders and has a rough idle. Smoothes out after running a while but still not what it should be. I'll be having this looked at.
The other thing. When I turn the car on and at the top of the dash it sounds like a clicking noice for a second and a half then goes away.
nice Dan great book I love it
Tanks for everything very good diagnostic
16:07. That 86z in the background 👍🏻
That would be Jake Danners car 😍
@@calebldanner nice! I’ve had a few of those z cars over the years. Love the car.. and the content man. I’m a younger Audi tech in the field and I’m learning so much from watching this channel. Everyone looks at me funny when I apply the fundamentals. But my diagnosis are 100 percent. So thank you Caleb, Paul and Danner.
Great video once again.. can you advise me on a scan tool to purchase to use in my country, I work on alot of nissan vehicles,Toyota, etc.. i'm from guyana ,South America.
Your the man Paul 👍
There's not much to like about Lucas electrics, but I do like their wiring color codes.
OMG that was funny the horn......you guys made my day....
Thank you mr danner
Good video! What about if you don’t have a scope to see the waveform. A incandescent test light to backprobe the control wire of a suspected injector is enough to blame a Computer fault?
Thanks a lot for another interesting video
Thanks Dan keep going
Never thought about this before but the pattern reading and firing order seems completely backwards to me. Scope data is scrolling from left to right but the triggered events are read from left to right when chronologically, the beginning of the event should be from right to left since past events go off screen on the rhs. Firing order should also logically follow the scrolling pattern where the first event "1" should be on the far right with the next event occuring to the left on screen and so on... Say a 4 cylinder with order 1 3 4 2 should logically appear on screen as 2 4 3 1 according to time elapsed. What am I missing?
I am fascinated but know almost nothing. Can you use my 03 Silverado as an example house call? Cranks, no start. Stalled then began adding parts. Looks so easy for you kids!
Richie, Long Island
Do injectors have a reasonably long service life. I was considering changing
all 8 on my early 90s Ford Windsor. It has 125000 miles. Idle could be smoother
it's a bit lumpy and fuel economy is questionable. 4 are under the intake which
makes me want to change all of them.
The early Ford injectors didn't have this issue but I have done some on those that were restricted. What year? Can you get fuel trim data from it?
@@ScannerDanner It's a 94 5.0. I don't have a scanner to check fuel trims.
Command Control ride. One of the strut controllers is not responding properly.
0:43 this track set my speakers aflame 🔥 where can I cop the full mixtape
Great Job
I need a scanner danner hotline number lol good stuff man I’m new to the field mainly oil tire brakes and suspension right now working up to it
Keep watching, ill help you get there 😉 thanks!
Thank u mr danner 👍
Man I heard that accent & immediately knew it was Pittsburgh
Can I change the injectors myself ? I have a 1999 DeVille
Very informative video Paul. Thank you for sharing. 😊
With that 2nd injector, the downward spike after the injector shuts off, its like a negative spike, Ive noticed that on other components before, that are failing and I know they have a flyback diodes for the collapsing magnetic field, but could that negative spike be the diode leaking threw due to the higher current on a shorted component?
Not sure my friend
Oh no, BWD, broke when delivered as Eric at South Main Auto says, lol. Hopefully no cat converter damage.
