Yes it is; but is that the way it was back then. We can not change the past; we can learn from it. On another level there is no point of judging or hating on people from another era; because their culture was entirely different from what we experience today. We do not know, for sure, in our heart of hearts, how we would behave given the circumstances those people had to endure.
Marian doesn’t have a fortune for the marriage market and Aunt Agnes has told her niece that she’s living in “her house” only at her pleasure, meaning she could be asked to leave at any time. Marian needs a job to make her own way in life , in case she has to and she’s a modern and independent young woman who wants a purpose in her life. I admire Aurora Fane for being honest with Bertha Russell wrt the Opera War situation.
I hope you feel better soon! We’ve been sick at our house, (hubs and I), for about the last three weeks. It seems to hang on and linger for much longer than usual. Mine turned to pneumonia and am just now starting to feel somewhat better. Btw, LOVED this video! I’m so glad you’re covering it! I vote yes for a video covering the gorgeous wardrobe! I found the moment between John and Oscar surprisingly touching. I definitely feel like Oscar's life is built on facades and not just because of his sexuality and the length he's going to to hide it. He's always a clown type of guy, but in this episode we saw how seriously fucked up he was from their break up. When he asked John not hate him it actually made my heart twist a little, and I wasn't expecting that from an Oscar and John scene lol. It was nice seeing them being so respectful towards each other. He's so similar to his mother in that sense too. Agnes is so afraid of change and being left alone, she tries to micromanage everything. And Oscar kept on saying to John nothing will change between them, no matter what he chooses to do. But when it did, he practically fell to some self destructive cycle. Just like Agnes goes batshit crazy from any change. They are probably both traumatized by Mr.Van Rhijn. To me this is the real interesting underlying theme in their family dynamic. It's very subtle but it's there. The Russel family is fun to follow but they don't have near as much backstory or depth to them, at least yet.
Did anyone notice the side eye and hurry from Oscar and the church "rector"? In episode 1 after the church service Oscar didn't want to meet the new rector. Re-watch the body language of them both. I noticed in episode 2 when Oscar came into the house and saw the rector sitting there, again his body language and side eye was very telling. Why isn't the Rector married? Like Oscar it seems very odd to be an older man in those times and NOT be married. And like Oscar the Rector mentions that his mother was a strong character just like Agnes and he wouldn't be able to leave Boston until after her death. The Rector is probably a closeted Gay Man and Oscar knows him from that circle. Only my observation. He needs a wife to fit into society and Ada is perfect. What do you guys think?

I'm so happy Mr. Russell blocked Oscar. I'm not happy hes trying to trick Gladys into this sham marriage. I think Gladys will surprise us. I think she's just as smart as both of her parents. Oscar needs to find a lesbian to marry. They both can keep up the facade together while sleeping with other people on the side.
9:14 the issue with the POV you had about "if all I had to do was nothing but wear pretty dresses" is that literally is all they could do. Couldn't go anywhere without an escort or chaperone, couldn't earn money, vote etc. Aunt Agnes needs some vodka.
I absolutely think Marion has been influenced by the women around her and NY itself. In season 1 she told Peggy on several occasions how she admired her for living her own life. I think she just wants to have a little of that same independence and she really is enjoying teaching. I would call the love match for Marion “MR WRONG.” Nice guy, but to old for her and very boring. Aunt Agnes is obviously having a difficulty with how life around her is changing. However; I do see her concern for Marion and the good name of the family is very important for all of them. She pulled herself out of the gutter with a lot of sacrifice and wants to keep the name good. Your reputation and name is everything in this time period. She also realizes Marion in reality hasn’t a penny to her name and she needs to marry to secure her future. I wasn’t surprised at all that Oscar was never going to get anywhere with Gladys, and he is to old for her. Sorry Oscar, but Gladys definitely deserves better. Oscar is the only son and he understands the reality of it all. He definitely has a desire for money and knows that it’s time to marry and he definitely wants to live the good life and he needs to marry money to advance himself. I’m sure he would like to also secure a home in Newport instead of being everyone’s guest.
I never thought about Oscar wanting to be able to secure a home for himself in Newport. He really does want it all. It only makes sense that he would want that too. Good observation!

You were coming down hard on the gay characters considering the times, we've just recently gained marriage equality.
I literally said nothing negative about the gay characters. John Adams should have had more understanding for Oscar. That's all.
