Not his fault he probaly wasn't alive when this game first came out. Hell does he know what 56k is? Such a great game. I miss my old home on the Atlantic server.
this is the best all around mmorpg ive played, the fact that you can put any skills on your character, that you can build and decorate complex houses, and just sit around and do non-combat stuff, so much fun.
Greatest game ever! There will NEVER be another UO. Known for the best and most skilled PvP out of every MMORPG and for good reason. Its pvp is still unmatched by any other game and that is saying something.
Go search for UO Second Age Server. Its a free shard dedicated to the T2A one facet rule. Everything you remembered about that era of the game is alive and well on that free shard. Its awesome! And theres a large amount of players unlike some of the other free shards.
That's not entirely true, it may have been the first game to ever have the label MMORPG because the devs created the game, but the first mmorpg was never winter nights in 1991.
@DeathForRomance I disagree with your assessment that the entire game is just clicking. If you go by that logic, every game for PC is just pressing A, W, S and D. There's just no strategy. Every console game is just moving some sticks around. No strategy there, either. What you need to understand is that clicking is just a medium for your character's control. It shouldn't be seen as something that completely removes the depth of the game.
Most of you people who have never played this game back in the days, may find the grapchis ver outdated and indeed, they are (compared to the standards these days). But remember this game was founded in 1997 and since then, nothing much have changed. You didn't just PLAY this game.. You LIVED your character.. I have never played a game which has so much depth and interaction. I think EA made some very bad decisions causing the devs to flee to WoW.. I recently started again but it's not the same
Back sometime in the late 90's I was mad at my then boyfriend for playing this game for hours then one day he left it on and I started fooling around with his character, omg, it was love at first sight. Since then I have played every RPG's I could get my hands on, including Baldur's gate, all the Might and Magic's, and then horus of devouring Morrowind, Oblivion and now Skyrim. But would you believe I miss this game the most? I do!! Omg do I ever, lol
I for one prefer the old school 2D graphics.. I grew up on it.. and it's so much easier to keep track of what's going on on screen.. Age of Empires, Starcraft, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Red Alert... I just like them. Some games would never work with 2D graphics, but a lot of them do. If you don't like them, don't play it. I'll never understand why people will complain about something that they had no intention of even giving a chance.
My first experience was to log in and have a fireball hit me through lag from all the people on screen. When I got to my body all the items were gone. I once spent all day mining ore and a PK killed me and looted it all. I remember getting angry a fair amount and joined an anti PK group. I recall we had a Bard that could play a song that would stop everyone from entering attack mode. People would tame Dragons to guard their loot and Treasure in their houses. It really was the wild west of MMOs. You had to protect yourself. Sadly there was an optimal combat build most people used and it was a battle mage. They would send fireballs at you or shoot you with a bow and teleport away if they got into trouble. They also wore full plate armor. If I recall you could get magic resistance up by getting hit with magic spells. I think you attributes increased depending on what skill you used. If you hit the cap other attributes/skills would go down. This and Everquest are my favorite MMOs by far. Nothing compared to these two when they first released, the chaos, and the excitement generated by the players. It was like exploring uncharted territory for the first time.
@DragonHunterX I mean... Ultima Online was released in 1997, while Runescape didn't come around until around 2001. Therefore UO can't really be like Runescape since it was created before Runescape. =P
what always bugged me about this game when playing it was how there seemed to be creatures just everywhere and the landscape also didnt make a lot of sense. Also going into buildings and trying to navigate rooms was awfull.
It really depends on what you want to call an MMO. MUD games are technically MMORPG's, and MANY of them came before Ultima. In reality, its semantics. Everquest is arguably the father of the modern MMO's, and that was heavily influenced by Ultima.
@DragonHunterX Ultima came before Runescape, but was released around the same time Diablo was. So, Runescape is more like Ultima. Diablo's just its own genre.
Why hasn't this game been remade? Update the graphics and keep EVERYTHING ELSE! I miss this game and all it's glory, I miss taming a bunch of imps and then selling them to starter characters for 10 gold a piece. Though I only got to play for one summer when I was 11.
That would be neat, they could redo it like how they remade Dota! Dota 2 is essentially Dota but with updated graphics similar to what you said they should do.
The original UO is being remade by two former Mythic devs who worked on the franchise. It's in Alpha currently and will be coming out on Steam beta in 3 months. Here's an in depth review. m.ruclips.net/video/X94okE0Ma80/видео.html
@Smackdaddyish it was great for its time, the pvp is better then any other mmorpg ive seen sense then, you can attack anyone anywhere and take everything they have
@TheLololwut Totally right on that. The funny thing is, i bet he thinks god of war is full of strategy. I remember diablo 1 and 2, and you ONLY klicked to do everything and the game still kicked! Or every adventure game ever on the PC.
Everyone also says that Jesus rose from the dead. But let me know how that works out for you. Dransik was created on a Macintosh in 1986. There are storyboards and pictures deep within the internet to prove said statements above.
i miss this game so much! its been 12 yrs I think since I last played this game.. so much memories, so many friends had made..and I miss my tower somewhere in Lost Lands =(( anyone can msg me a good shard to play UO again? I'll really appreciate it.. Im from SEA btw
Might want to do some homework on that comment, dude. WoW is the one who ripped of Ultima, not the other way around. Ultima is one (If not THE) first MMO ever.
Let's just say you put a blue sticker on 1 of 2 PS3 and 1 of 2 PS2 controllers. one PS3 controller would be like the other but with a blue sticker. one PS2 controller would be like the other but with a blue sticker. but both controllers work the same, feel the same and perform the same. comparing the PS3 and PS2 controllers are hardly any different. when comparing likeness from one thing to another TIME doesn't matter, it would be the ALIKE VALUES that both objects share.
Basically: 1) Melting pot type of community (RP, PvP, PK, everything in between) 2) Complete freedom You can't really understand what UO was by watching a video. No other game has ever had what it had and no game ever will.
ANYONE who thinks any mmo came before ultima is WRONG only with the exception of meridian 59 and text based games and MUD's the next firsts are everquest and asherons call, runescape was an early one as well but im sure there was at least one mmo before runescape
Well, I decided to reply to your comment with an exact quote from PaperBatVG, I thought it was appropriate. You did manage to stir up some butthurt from other people, but you screwed up by calling yourself a troll. Just a tip for next time.
Not his fault he probaly wasn't alive when this game first came out. Hell does he know what 56k is? Such a great game. I miss my old home on the Atlantic server.
Atlantic represent!!!
this is the best all around mmorpg ive played, the fact that you can put any skills on your character, that you can build and decorate complex houses, and just sit around and do non-combat stuff, so much fun.
this game is 16 years old and inspiration behind those games you play today.
Oh... my... gawd...
Not the gameplay, but the music just sent me into mad nostalgia :D
This was absolutely AMAZING back in the day!
God i miss this game so much. I spent so many of my teenage years burning hours in this. Good times good times...
I never got to play this game, but at 1:47, is there a reason the Fellowship theme starts playing, or does it just play randomly as you walk?
Dude, this game is 15 years old... It's like the grandfather of MMO's.
@Eulogy68 yes and no u can use the classic client or the new enhanced client
Greatest game ever! There will NEVER be another UO. Known for the best and most skilled PvP out of every MMORPG and for good reason. Its pvp is still unmatched by any other game and that is saying something.
i am truly sorry i just missed this one! It looks like it was EPIC!
Always wanted to play this game; always did like games with this sort of perspective ended up playing Tibia for a long while.
Brilliant music.
Wish I was around to play this game back in the day. Would've loved it, I'm sure.
This game came out in 1999 I REPEAT 1999.It was a great game and some people still play this.
A good new U.S. based server is called UO Perilous - based on Renaissance but with only Felucca
I like how you dont even hear anything but the music. Were they too lazy to put sound effects in the game?
I have just finished a painting... funny enough the Mona Lisa looks just like it! I might sue someone, do I have a good case NWA90?
Brings back so many memories
@DeathForRomance Yes. I've played both. I still don't understand why you hate it and I'm still waiting on some objective reasoning.
This game was amazing back in the old days.
Fighting Skeletons! NICE!
Is it the graveyard by Vesper?
why does he run faster when he goes south but slower when he goes south west?
@Tailean did you come from the past like from 1995 with your time machine? or were you being sarcastic?
Go search for UO Second Age Server. Its a free shard dedicated to the T2A one facet rule. Everything you remembered about that era of the game is alive and well on that free shard. Its awesome! And theres a large amount of players unlike some of the other free shards.
That's not entirely true, it may have been the first game to ever have the label MMORPG because the devs created the game, but the first mmorpg was never winter nights in 1991.
I had to use configs. Still didn't work.

@DrMarvopolis so thats not KR then?

the hate/venom on someone preferring the 3d client sums up the uo community pretty well.
My first experience was to log in and have a fireball hit me through lag from all the people on screen. When I got to my body all the items were gone.

I played this game when i was 7 years old.
Great game.
can i buy this? or is it subscription?
are the sever still up for this ??
are the servers even up anymore?
and second song too please
this game came out 15 years ago... you probably weren't born back then
Ultima Online 2 anyone ? ...
Thumb up to revive the BEST MMORPG ever made with just better graphic.
name of first song please
No, Habita on commodor 64 CREATED the MMORPG genre, right?
...
It really depends on what you want to call an MMO. MUD games are technically MMORPG's, and MANY of them came before Ultima. In reality, its semantics. Everquest is arguably the father of the modern MMO's, and that was heavily influenced by Ultima.
Ultima online is still the best mmorpg i've played. I haven't played it since like 2001 though. I have no recollection of my account details either
Is this how UO looks now?
@DragonHunterX Ultima came before Runescape, but was released around the same time Diablo was. So, Runescape is more like Ultima. Diablo's just its own genre.
@Dragonhunterx lol. well anyways. i highly recommend playing this game. it holds heaps of nostalgia for me.
I just got over EQ and came over to see what was the competition all about its 2012 btw
wats retro??
@dragonhunterx no. UO had babies. many babies. runescape and diablo are just 2 of the offspring.
Why hasn't this game been remade? Update the graphics and keep EVERYTHING ELSE! I miss this game and all it's glory, I miss taming a bunch of imps and then selling them to starter characters for 10 gold a piece. Though I only got to play for one summer when I was 11.

Why couldn't you play
@kaysh1 Neverwinter Nights was not an MMO.
this must have been so awesome when it first released
2 months and still trolling strong
probably the best MMO ever created. The only things that get close to it are Darkfall and maybe Mortal Online.
I remember playing this as I was waiting for EQ to release. Great memories!
The original UO is being remade by two former Mythic devs who worked on the franchise. It's in Alpha currently and will be coming out on Steam beta in 3 months. Here's an in depth review. m.ruclips.net/video/X94okE0Ma80/видео.html
@lordofthenoobs theres a new free shard out doing the oppisite of what fucked retail uo up you should try it
@Smackdaddyish it was great for its time, the pvp is better then any other mmorpg ive seen sense then, you can attack anyone anywhere and take everything they have
i think one person saw me through a couple of weeks ago
you do realise tibia was released before ultima online?
Tibianarok?
@TheLololwut Totally right on that. The funny thing is, i bet he thinks god of war is full of strategy. I remember diablo 1 and 2, and you ONLY klicked to do everything and the game still kicked! Or every adventure game ever on the PC.
But that's for them to find out. Nothing is more satisfying than "Wait.....your just a troll!!!!" and deleting all their butthurt replies.
I rememeber when Lord British was making a speech, forgot to put up his invulnerability flags and someone killed him mid speech. That was so funny.
oh dear god my boy. cs is still a great fps to this day
i love these types of games. downloading the game now
Everyone also says that Jesus rose from the dead. But let me know how that works out for you.
Dransik was created on a Macintosh in 1986. There are storyboards and pictures deep within the internet to prove said statements above.
Same here, this looks like something that i would have a blast on!
@djlegacy96 Yeah indeed, but this is the nasty 3D client, the 2D one - aka the original - was released in 1997, so times do indeed change ^^
ultima forever coming
Tibia actually came before this. Amazing game that I highly recommend.
Tibia...my youth...10 years of on and off playing...nevver a botter/abuser/ks'er...good times
+Eric Martin Crazy. As a UO player as of 98 I don't think i've ever heard of Tibia. I probably have but I have long since forgotten.
there is a game similar to this called faldonrpg its alot of fun but sadly the player base is really small
are you saying this game alone advanced technology that much and there would be no other possible way to make better games if it werent for this?
i miss this game so much! its been 12 yrs I think since I last played this game.. so much memories, so many friends had made..and I miss my tower somewhere in Lost Lands =(( anyone can msg me a good shard to play UO again? I'll really appreciate it.. Im from SEA btw
Might want to do some homework on that comment, dude. WoW is the one who ripped of Ultima, not the other way around. Ultima is one (If not THE) first MMO ever.
ehm no healing through poison
it looks a lot like rs
Miss ultima online
who is jay wilson?
i assume its someone terrible and that would explain why you would know of that person
Kinda looks like Baldur's Gate. I'd totally try this game.
Good ol days :^)
People don't care, when their supposed to stay mad at you, so something's wrong.
I got news for the lot of you.... Dransik came before Ultima...... Dransik is truly the father of all MMORPGs.
Basically:
1) Melting pot type of community (RP, PvP, PK, everything in between)
2) Complete freedom
You can't really understand what UO was by watching a video. No other game has ever had what it had and no game ever will.
this just made me download the free trial. trying to get my old account info
@greedlusthate Really only in the perspective. The game plays and feels completely different.
Very Diablo-esque. Or vise versa?
ANYONE who thinks any mmo came before ultima is WRONG only with the exception of meridian 59 and text based games and MUD's the next firsts are everquest and asherons call, runescape was an early one as well but im sure there was at least one mmo before runescape
@mat967 It was a comment I made almost a year ago. you're the troll.
I mean created the name (referring to my created the game statement in my previous comment).
Well, I decided to reply to your comment with an exact quote from PaperBatVG, I thought it was appropriate.
You did manage to stir up some butthurt from other people, but you screwed up by calling yourself a troll.
Just a tip for next time.
@DragonHunterX Ultima Online was far greater than Runescape could have ever imagined to become.
p.s. Runescape is like UO, not the other way :)
@devilazpl
well damn, this game was made in 1997, whaddya expect
@DragonHunterX Really? I don`t make sense, LOL. Don`t make me laugh, it`s you here who is saying Ultima is Diablo + RS.
So please come again.
i was about to send you a wave of "good" words.
I want my game back :( UO T2A one facet.. Europa shard, Guardians of Destiny.. *sigh*
@latzko91 It was one of the first MMORPG's haha it's amazing for it's time...
