Worked there in 71/72 the place was pumping out steel like crazy. Made big money with incentive extra cash. Terrible conditions with rats as big as cats but the money was there.
Right now I'm watching live footage of what seems to be a big Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna, explosions and the collapse of The Who ceiling of a huge plant. Looks pretty bad. Hope no one is hurt.
That plant should never have been built in New York. That state raped Bethlehem Steel Lackawanna on taxes to the point that Bethlehem Steel stopped reinvesting. If that plant had been built in Erie, PA and anywhere in Ohio it would still be producing automotive steel.
I had 2 generations of my family work there at the plant in Lackawanna, NY
Good ole u.s. overseas trade deals was the final nail in the coffin for us all but the politicians etc.

really slowed down the train industry too. so many other jobs where effected.
