I'm surprised you've never heard of Donna Summer! She ruled the 70's and early 80's. There's plenty more to hear from her. Check it all out.

This song launched the “New Wave” genre that followed in the early 80s. Nothing sounded remotely like this track when it came out. It was revolutionary. It changed the course of popular music (and it took a few years for the industry to catch up). It’s influence can still be heard in todays music. When David Bowie heard it for the first time he said “I’ve just heard the future”
    RIP Donna Summer ❤️

Actually, the "I've heard the future" quote was not from Bowie, but the producer he was working with at the time, Brian Eno, who before that had produced albums for Roxy Music and later on U2. According to Bowie himself, Brian Eno came running into the studio with the 45 and said "I have heard the future!"

One of the most influential electronic songs of all time. David Bowie called this “the sound of the future.” Surprised you didn’t love this. It’s such a musical template for most electronic music today.

Even at the time, we didn’t love it right away. It was tough to dance to because we were listening to ABBA and whatever else. The rest of the album this song was from was pretty conventional disco. Giorgio Moroder was setting down a blueprint for dance music after the 70’s.

Ethereal is a good word for this song. This song is a late night, disco club song played loud. It's not going to make you feel much sitting there in broad daylight. If you really want to experience it, turn down the lights at night, play this song loud, and allow yourself to get lost in it and just dance.
This song filled up the dance floor when it was played. It's ethereal hypnotic trance-like groove allowed people to let go of themselves and just dance. That is what moved people, its ability to allow yourself to let go and just do it. This song was a huge hit in 77 and Donna Summer was the Queen of Disco. The guy in the back was snapping his sticks together to make that "snap" sound.
This song was epic and Giorgio Moroder (the producer) was way ahead of his time. Even today, Giorgio Moroder is still collaborating with artists like Daft Punk, Kylie Minogue, and Sia.

This is arguably the single most revolutionary song of the last half century, it is almost impossible to overstate the importance of I Feel Love and it still sounds absolutely fantastic today. You said that it sounds ahead of it's time - it wasn't, it's just that nothing has come since to match it.

It was one of those songs back in 1977 that got everyone on the dance floor and it was primarily the electronic disco beat which was so new back then that got everyone’s attention rather than the lyrics or vocals of the song. But Donna’s voice was perfect for this song.

    • @rsmith7912
      @rsmith7912 5 месяцев назад +2

The 12" version is one of Donna's best tracks imo. Based on a melody from the classical composer Chopin. Barry Manilow put words to the melody & recorded it as a ballad. Donna & Giorgio then made their disco version of the song which to me is still the best version. In the UK it was a top 10 hit for her as the follow up to the mega worldwide hit 'Love to love you baby' which turned her into a superstar almost overnight. Banned by radio but just a beautiful sensual song sung with the voice of an angel. Thousands of babies would have been made whilst playing the 17min long LP version of that song! Barry Manilow made his own dance version of the song after hearing Donna's wonderful version & had a decent hit himself with it. Years later in the 90's the boyband Take That made their own dance version of it, minus the heavy breathing, & took it all the way to no 1. 'I feel love' was Donna's 5th hit in the UK & shot to no 1 staying there for 4 weeks. I think no 4 in the US. It was Giorgio Moroder producing a song that he wanted to sound like it had come from the future & it was like nothing anyone had heard before. Disco ruled the world but 'I feel love' was something else entirley & was the trailblazer to all the electronic sounds of the later '70s & '80s, into house, trance & techno. It was definately of it's time & not before it's time. It was really more thinking about the future, which was the intention of course. It's huge success proved they knew their stuff when useing all the new arriving synthesizers but it was still very relevant of the times. It will still fill any dancefloor today but if you're not into dancing yourself I can understand why this track might have passed you by. She sadly died way too young but her music legacy is huge & as much as she could sing like an angel she also had the most powerful set of lungs on her. Try 'McCarthur Park' or her singing at the superbowl 'The star spangled banner' if you want proof. She deserves a proper movie biopic with a soundtrack to educate people. Her lifestory is quite an amazing one too, I just don't understand why Hollywood haven't given it a greenlight.

This was Donna Summer's big break through song that led us deeper into the disco era. Giorgio Moroder was the music specialist who provided the alien techno sound while Donna Summer belted out her angelic voice on a whole new level. After winning the Academy Award for best soundtrack in the movie Midnight Express, Moroder requested Gloria Gaynor first for the song, but when she couldn't hit the high notes like he wanted, he had heard about Donna's unique voice and offered her a chance to sing I feel love. It was an instant hit the year it came out. It went to number one for weeks and propelled Donna's career even further. Since then, before her untimely death Donna went on to become known as the queen of disco right through the eighties and nineties. Many up and coming female vocalists often listened to Donna's songs during her solo career which helped them exercise their vocal ranges. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Paula Abdul, Irene Cara and many more payed tribute to Donna as their beacon to stardom. Giorgio Moroder went on to create more albums with various other singers but none were as successful like it was when he chose Donna Summer.

Her "This Time I know it for real" is a classic and reinvention of herself.
she works hard for the money" was like #1 for weeks on end. Reinvention Suggestion: Mid 80's Aretha Franklin, "Freeway of love" "knew you were waiting" with George Michael. Natalie Cole, "Pink Cadillac remix version" "Miss you like Crazy" "I live for your love" Diana Ross, "The Boss" "Swept Away Remix version" and "Eaten Alive" . You did Cher 80 revamp - but you can do her 2000 revamp "One by one remix junior Vasquez", "Believe remix" "Strong enough" the remix versions have music videos. Best

The Goddess! This particular song was meant to sound very futuristic showcasing the then new electronic instruments. The guy with the sticks was making that percussive sound that kinda sounded like whips. Donna has plenty of songs that really showcase her range: "MacArthur Park," "Heaven Knows," "Hot Stuff/Bad Girls," "Walk Away," "Last Dance," "On the Radio," "She Works Hard for the Money," "State of Independence," "This Time I Know is For Real," and more. One of the foundations or cornerstones of synthpop and electronic dance music. :) "Faster To Nowhere" is another great song from this era of her career. "State Of Independence" a cover of Jon & Vangelis song is really a respected one as well, with a superstar backing vocal group including Michael Jackson. "Hot Stuff" and the whole "Bad Girls" album was massive in the late 1970s'.
Please check out "State Of Independence" by Summer. It represents her vocals better than "I Feel Love" and the backing is also richer.

"Kraftwerk" is the effect used on this song, the first Donna Summer number I ever heard when someone lent me their promotional album back of the "flower of my youth" (25 years old in 1977!) In a live performance at Universal Ampitheatre the same year, I was privileged to see her "make love" to the microphone onstage with mesmerizing gyrations, and we in the audience going wild. Great memories! (P.S. Your "opera" reference was interesting, too. Donna Sommer (married named before it was changed to "Summer") was in the German production of "Hair" [singing the "Aquarius" song] and had also participated in the Vienna Volksoper comedy theatre before making it big internationally. Her German was also fluent.)

This was revolutionary in the disco years & will always be remembered as her best track purely because of its innovative sound & it's impact that it made, sounding like nothing else you'd ever heard on the radio or dancefloors across the world before.
You have to remember also that it was quite rare in the '70s for a song to be released along with a video. MTV didn't start until '80 playing videos which kick started the importance of song & video released together. They didn't give dance music much attention at first either & it was years before they even showed a track by a black woman. So this video was a quick rush job from a live performance at the time, spliced together with another gig to satisfy it's worldwide success. There never was an official video release made to this unfortunately. It wasn't until recently that it was given the title of official video release. As much as Donna had her huge worldwide successes, she was signed to GTO records in the UK & Casablanca in the US, who didn't invest or see the need to even create videos. It's a real shame thinking today about what might have been if things were different at the time.

This song was groundbreaking in its time. 45 Years on, it still sounds as fresh as the day this song hit the streets.
No techno or trance in the 90s without Giorgio Moroder's influence. No Giorgio Moroder without Kraftwerk's influence. No Kraftwerk without Wendy Carlos' influence.
Don't take too much notice of the clip and the instruments on that stage. This is all electronic gear. For the largest part it was created on a Moog synthesizer. As I recall, only a real bass drum was used for the kick.

Interesting it don't did much to you emotionally, but this video is one of the trippest I've seen today... that guy back there with the drumsticks is like a maestro and he shows all the vibe of this song , back and forth, while Donna sings and peforms... and he got your attention 😁, ( or should I say tension ? ) Long song ?... 🤔 I didn't even feel the time passing... 😂 Nice one !

Donna Summer is the Bomb ! If you didn’t feel this song then you need to check to see if you got a heartbeat 💓 ha ha ! I love her music to this day and always will. Takes me back to some really good times that I’m afraid we will never see again.

Donna Summer is the queen of disco. Last Dance & Hard for the Money are 2 of my favorites.
BTW if you listen back there's a swish sound on the beat. That's the sound that the guy at the bongos is making.

That guy throwing his arms up is actually making a "slapping" type sound....utilizing a type of instrument of wood. Donna Summer the QUEEN OF DISCO. Man, I remember she ROCKED on the radio stations. R.i.p. Ms Summer.

I'm sure you've already been informed that the original is about 8 minutes long. When I heard Donna Summer back in high school, yes HS, my mother was buying me my first sound system (Marantz) and when we walked into the electronics store, the staff was playing the 17-minute version of "Try Me", full blast on a Bose Speaker System. Right there, I went from rocker (Zepplin, Hendrix, Sabbath...) to full on disco, then punk, the modern romance...and so on.

The original version was the album version of 5 & a bit minutes. When they released a 12" version later it was edited up to the 8 minutes you mention which was better for dancefloors. 5 years later Patrick Cowley, the new synthesizer wizard on the scene, produced an even better 13 minute ultimate version. He added his own unique style of pure magical disco chaos to an already amazing song & it reached no 21 on the UK charts. In '95 it was given another house remix which reached no 8, although in my opinion that mix took the energy out of the original. It's been remixed a thousand times since to varying degrees of good or bad but proves to show you just cant keep a monumental hit like this down.

You're right. The original was the 5 + minute album version released in May 1977. I initially purchased the 12" single version (released about 4 months later). Subsequently my brain tells me it's the original and of course I had to look this all up. The album version is fine, but the single is a masterpiece. The Patrick Cowley version, in my opinion, is more a novelty; he tried too hard and added sections that, to me, seem disconnected from the rest of the song; simply add-ons that don't really connect or blend with the original in a cohesive manner. I don't know anything about any other released versions. I usually think they're 💩. BUT ANTON, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. I have to check out your other videos. @@rsmith7912

@@60sStyling I was around at the time so I know I'm right. I saw that you like to know the true details about songs which is why I wanted to just inform you. The 12" mix isn't a remix either just an extra edit of the original album version which was the intention also the same as the 7" single version. As far as I can recall the 12" was only released in America anyway. On it's b-side was another extended version of a following hit 'The Deep' which was brilliant too. It was a way for Casablanca to get maximum mileage out of both tracks as they were still massive in the discos. We'll have to disagree on the Patrick Cowley version I think. To really appreciate it you would have had to hear it through club speakers & played very loud. I'm presuming you might have not been experienced in disco dancing at the time. It was aimed purely at the dancefloors where the song was still hugely popular. It wasn't meant for radio where it wouldn't sound so good & was way too long anyway.
I've always enjoyed finding out about music from the past as well. When you look in with retrorespect though, it's no wonder that sometimes the information might be wrong basically because you just weren't there at the time. Which is where us oldies dip in, see we can be usefull sometimes. End of todays lesson.

if you read up on this song you will see more of how important this song is. she also sang in this tone for the affect of the song. she actually has a huge power voice. she remade Macarthur Park which shows off her arsenal. BTW the guy in video was playing a synthesizer and there are no bongos in the song. they were actually playing live but the clip was used to make video.,

Hello Amigo! Glad you walked into Donna Summer world. Not only was she considered the Queen of Disco but also the Godmother of Trance and EDM. She was very experimental with her music, a flawless voice, she can do no wrong. She won Grammys and many awards. I saw her live and was blown away with her tone, clarity and mastery of notes. She was huge in the 70s and 80s and yes always ahead of her time. She was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a year after she passed. One of her best performances was a month before she passed because of cancer, check it out. Also her VH1 live concert was vocally amazing. As she got older her voice became more pure and powerful, true legend.

The beauty of this track is that it came out at the height of the disco era, yet through the evolution of dance music from disco, through funk music to house and rave, etc, it stands alone as a pure classic. Nothing compares to it.

People were terrified by anything that looked and sounded futuristic back in the day as science fiction movies always portrayed the future with shocking and bleak outcomes. So you can imagine how unlikely it was for a new synth pop era to come in and be embraced by everyone! Totally changing music forever!

Donna one of the greatest singers ever, her talent was off the charts among female singers. She had #1 songs up until she died in 2012. She was far more than a disco singer. Besides her amazing vocal talent, she is the only artist to have won Grammy awards in four different music categories, Rock, dance, R&B and Gospel. Donna could sing any song anywhere anytime acapella. Please react to Macarthur Park ruclips.net/video/xMhAipAmQAA/видео.html
