  • Adirondack place names run the gamut from the mundane to the whimsical. This video takes a look at a few examples from both categories. I also delve into a story from my family history. The time my Dad flew into "Lost Pond" (one of nine) to fight a fire with great Uncle Elmer. Thunderstorms with rain put out the fire but they had to bushwhack out in the dark, while it was pouring, with a single balky flashlight. Back in the day that was all in day's work.

Oops, 'Pharaoh' in Pharaoh Mountain is spelled incorrectly near the end of the video. I actually fixed that at one point, but we've received 20+ inches of wet snow here in Long Lake today and the power blinked on and off while I was putting the finishing touches to the video. And that fix was lost. That's a gory detail.
