You can find out derive radii of gears by considering speed ratio and space constrains. If gear 1 is lifting the mass, Torque required , T1 = R1xMxg

I loved it! Just subscribed, and it has already proved invaluable to my new design, prototype and fabrication service. We just incorporated a couple of weeks ago; I'm using Solidworks to design prototype parts, which we print up on our Formlabs SLA 3d printer. All the passion and creativity will get us nowhere without fundamentals, and you have so generously and succinctly provided tools for our foundation!

  • @fwsilverstone

Is the diameter of the two gears at 1:45 the diameter of the root circle, pitch circle, or tip circle? I assume pitch circle since they intersect at a single point but it is unclear in the video because if it is the pitch circle then Dp1 + Dp2 does not equal allowable width. To find the allowable width, you would also have to add the addendum of each gear (assuming the diameters are of the pitch circle). If you don't do this, the teeth will stick out slightly further than predicted with the equation, therefore improperly calculating the space that the gears will take up.

    • @gamingSlasher

The thinking is that the pinion should be a little harder because it has more revolutions and therefore should be a little stronger. The harder tooth will also wear on the softer tooth and you then want that wear on the gear.
