    I’ve seen all sorts of VU meters: LED, dixie tubes, magic eye tubes … but the balls of paper! The yellow ping-pong balls! Genius! I actually thought at first they were popcorn, and that you’d have a snack after the testing 😊

      I had to channel my inner analogue Manuel and the ping pong balls made more noise than the speakers, packing peanuts are good too 😄 Thanks Mate.

    We are so resourceful these days with the Internet. 😁 It’s extremely valuable technology in these difficult times.
    It was a very rewarding result with patience and team effort with that helpful conscientious gentleman from Germany. Hats off to him for being a team player in this radiogram project.
    Although no FM, I am excited by opportunities to restore a quality shortwave receiver like this one day and get a descent shortwave antenna set up on my property permanently.
    The shortwave experience with grandparents is a fond memory of this work.
    Good demonstration of the transformer coils ratio Dave with useful diagrams. Thank you! 😁☕️
    Thanks again for your help recently with the signal generator. The frequency counter arrived. I have pulled down the SG. It had been restored and the RF out put wiring for the FC was connected in directly at the rear of the RF selector.
    Very clean inside but a piece of solder was removed from between the gang capacitor plates. I ran another clean in there too and adjusted the rubbing plates.
    Looking forward to another radio adventure when possible. 😁👍🙋‍♂️

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад +1

      Hi Peter, the internet is the only means I have in doing these projects, it would have been very hard for an outsider to get into something like this before. I am just in the process of installing a better antenna and the results have been positive so far. I can now pick up SW stations I couldn't before, with a bit more finessing I should be able to improve on that again. I'm glad you have the generator working, I guessed it had been worked on before and I hope you have fixed the little niggles it had 👍🙂

    Thanks to Mr. Blitz Roehre's donation, another great project is driven to completion.
    Thanks for the link to the "Output Transformer Load Calculator" spreadsheet, it is as nice as any of your radio restorations!
    Mr. Blitz Roehre's channel is in German, if you don't speak German you can turn on CC and then go to the setting icon, pick auto-translate and then pick your language.

      Thank you Steve, my gram is now finished. You are welcome to the spreadsheet, I hope it's useful. I should have said about the Auto Translate feature in the video, I don't know why it doesn't show up when you click on the list of translations the first time, I might add the method in the description, thanks 👍🙂

    Nice nice job Dave.... and the cherry on top..... Hearing The WHO... My generation..... Wonderful job retrofitting that... and cheers to your friend in Germany for helping this gem come back to full life. Excellent job on the calculations as well, learning from that. You should name that radio Nadia Comăneci :)

      HI Ron, great Who song even if Roger does have a stutter. Thank you, I'm very happy having my gram working at last. The calculations are easy, I'm just lazy and made a spreadsheet😉 Nadia Comăneci, that's a name from the past 😂

      Ron replied a second time but it might have been deleted by RUclips, here it is:
      "David Tipton Can you believe Nadia is 60 now... oh boy.. and Roger... he is a good guy. I have performed on stage with him ( I am a bass player) an had dinner with him in the past. A real down to earth guy....with a heavy cockney accent :) I know Pete as well and correspond with him regularly via email. I have been a huge WHO fanatic for about 45 years.... :) "

  • @ellesmerewildwood4858

    I'm always amazed at how good these machines sounded with basic speakers. Of course, back in the day people listened to a different kind of music, no doof doof or techno back then.
    In those days we were listening to Marty Robins, Frankie Laine, Dean Martin, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, Elvis, maybe Sinatra and even classical, all of which sounded great on these machines. Mind you, the purists will say that valves make all the difference.
    Kudos to Mr. Blitz for his magnanimous generosity.

    • @DavidTipton101

      Hi Ellesmere, yes, they have a different sound to modern gear but it suits the music of the day which suits me as that's what I play with my collection of old records of course. I will second your kudos, thanks Ellesmere 👍🙂

    Hi Dave,
    A hearty applause to Blitz for locating, and furnishing you with two audio output transformers. For sure, he is a very decent chap! I have subscribed to his channel: and he mentioned in his response (I commended him for his kindness) he will be adding English subtitles to his future video uploads.
    I have enjoyed watching the restoration progress of the Grundig radiogram. Not only does it look good, it sounds, and performs good too.
    I look forward to your next radio restoration project, which will hopefully be followed by the radio Blitz sent you. That one should be as interesting, if not more interesting as the French radio you restored.
    Great talking to you my friend - and a Happy and prosperous 2022. All the best from Phil.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад

      Hi Phil, Happy 2022 to you and all the best. Blitz went way beyond in his quest to get the transformers for me then to include a unique to Australia radio was a real bonus, it may be the only one here. I'm very happy with the Grundig, I couldn't put it in it's final position because the Xmas tree was there, the tree is gone, just waiting for someone to help me move the gram now. I have a few projects on the go, when I finish them I will do the Carmen 2. I doubt anything will beat the French radio for quirky 😂
      Thanks for visiting Blitz, he deserves a little love. Thanks Phil

      @@DavidTipton101 Oh - i didn't know about this. Starting point in Germany was 1949. That was a result of second world war.
      As A punishment the others decided to take away all good frequencies and the people from that time had to be creative which resulted in FM at 87.5 ... 100 Mhz (later up to 108Mhz).

    A great start to the new year, David,
    and a new radio, with autotransformer and a hot chassis as well.
    Looked like it had an unique (maybe russian) magic eye tube also.
    Some guys have all the fun...
    Hey, "Blitz Roehre" isn't that those neon filled strobelights we used to play with before?
    They were used in flashes in old cameras and also in those lamps used to set ignitiontiming on cars.
    Charge them up to 3 - 400 volts, and then trigger the neon gas with a pulse.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад

      Thank you Geir, I'm glad you enjoyed it, it didn't have a lot of content unfortunately. I don't know what the magic eye is but it looked like an EM80 going by the quick glance I took when I unwrapped it, I hope so I have a number of them. Blitz Roehre might mean strobe light, I still have one in my garage 😀

    • @blitzroehre1807
      @blitzroehre1807 2 года назад +1

      Hi Geir, the magic eye is a totally fried EM80 and yes, Blitz Röhre means flash tube such as in strobe light or photoflash in german. I named my channel like that because Blitz is also lightning in german and because I do electronics and storm chasing hence the youtube nickname. I have yet to upload some storm chaser videos though.... no decent thunderstorms here for years now, maybe 2022? :-)

  • @a587g
    @a587g 2 года назад +1

    Nice job! I've found that the output transformers tend to matter more in regards to the output tube rather than the speaker. For example, I've used an output transformer matched with a 6F6, and noticed no difference between a 4, 6, or 8 ohm speaker. I think this may matter more when it comes to hi-fi equipment, but for these old AM radios as long as it works and sounds acceptable, it's good enough for me.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад +3

      Hi Adam, thank you. I don't think the difference will matter either in this set but the speaker impedance is reflected back into the primary of the OP transformer which is felt back at the OP valve. Without the right balance you can get too low current flow or too high, too high can shorten the valves life considerably. My concern here wasn't with the plate load but more that it would move the tone curve out of the sweet spot 🙂
