The last scene was filmed to show that way by the fact that Weird Al had to sing phonetically backwards as he's walking backwards. They then reran the film backwards, so that everybody and every animal looked like they were moving backwards except that Weird Al looked like he was walking forwards and he was singing normal. You could tell though that his lips were not perfectly saying the words. That was a very cool scene!
Another little detail that shows he’s actually moving backwards is the way his hair moves back into place just before he puts on the hat, and the cuffs of his trousers move forward during each step.
Its not green screened, he just learned to linpsync the song backwards and reversed the recording. You know, like you do when you're a living legend and want to flex on everybody else.
The line, "No lights, no phone, no motorcars..." is from the theme from Gilligan's Island, an American TV comedy from the '60s about a group of castaways and their attempts to get off the island. What a great idea to reference another isolated group who have no access to technology.
10:13 Florence Henderson - she played the the mom on the 70s sitcom The Brady Bunch. And a lot of other things,. But she was over 20 years older than Michelle Pfeiffer at the time of this video. That Al managed to find an mainstream, recognizable comedy actress who could be mistaken for the gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer was a genius move.
They weren't doing your man dirty. The line "no phone, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury, like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be." is actually a lyric from the theme song of the American TV show "Gilligan's Island." Al just borrowed it.
Ohhh, okay thanks for explaining it to me. I assumed they meant the book Robinson Crusoe, which people tend to call super boring. Thanks for the clarification!
It's funny how that's so ingrained in my mind (being a bit on the older side) that I knew it instantly and so many people have never even heard of the show.
That last scene was extremely difficult. Al had to spend weeks practicing. Learning to mouth those lines backwards, syllable for syllable. Also noteworthy was that scene with the barn frame. Al said that was the dumbest, scariest thing he has ever done. If he had been off by an inch, he would be dead now.
The movie with Coolio's videomwas Michelle Phifer. The woman in Weird Al's video is Florence Henderson also known as Mrs. Brady from The Brady Bunch. It amazes me that no one really notices. Also, you were laughing at Robinson Caruso, that entire part, "There's no phone, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury, like Robinson Caruso, it's as primitive as can be" is straight from the theme song of Gilligan's Island.
There is a high school near the Amish community in Lancaster Pennsylvania where students put on a skit of this song. They invited local Amish, who loved it.
"Are prices art insane" is a parody of an electronic chain named Crazy Eddies. "Crazy" Eddie Antar got in a little trouble with the law but they had great ads and the spokesman would yell are prices are insane!
I wouldn't say Al is making fun of the Amish people. Rather, he's poking fun at the stereotypical image society generally has about them. In any event, the man is a genius at parodies.
12:24 He wasn't green screened in. It looks like the entire thing is just being shown in reverse. You can tell how his lips don't match up except for the final line which is still a bit off so he likely practiced mouthing the movements backward. A better way to do this would have been to switch to playing normal footage when it zooms in for the close up as the animals would no longer be visible.
Lancaster county in Pennsylvania is a very well-known Amish community, so it's less a stereotype and more name recognition, even though it's hardly the only Amish community.
You totally missed the scene where Weird AL actually risked his life. He could have been crushed to death by the steel reinforced bard that fell over him.
I live near Lancaster PA and it's true, mostly Amish. It is weird seeing a horse and buggie drive down a street. I'm from CA so it was strange seeing that on a regular basis once I moved to PA.😂

I don’t know about that. I mean, Weird Al is the GOAT, but The Merkins are pretty darn good. All of their horror themed parodies. I Just Called To Say I’ll Kill You by Ghostface. Friends With No Faces by Leatherface. I’ll Be Stalking You by Jason Voorhees. Careless Sister by Michael Myers. I’ll Kill You That Way by The Slash Street Boys (Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Ghostface, and Leatherface). I Turned My Head Right Round by Reagan (from The Exorcist). And those are just the tip of the iceberg. It’s a very specific niche corner of the parody world, only doing parodies related to horror movies, but their lyrics are every bit as good as Weird Al’s.
Yeah I was curious about them when I saw the thumbnail, so if you think they are good, I'll give them a shot in the future, as I love horror movies and I quite like the backstreet boys as well
@@TheToaster1155 It’s a rabbit hole well worth jumping into. I think they have a song list of something like 50 songs, all parodies and all with a horror movie theme. Michael Myers does a lot of parodies of George Michael’s songs. Leatherface does a lot of famous country songs. Any songs that have to do with talking on the phone are parodied by Ghostface. It’s all really fun.
I actually really like "Perform this way" a Lady Gaga parody. It's such a fun and chaotic song and video. Though of course it's not that popular like Saga Begins or Fat. Those are classic.

Gangsta's Paradise is a true classic. It is a song with a message, but the actual message is a bit short. It is also a bit repetitive, in many ways. Al took the concept, expanded on it, moved some scenes around, and now you have a song and video that tell a much bigger story. Instead of repeating the chorus, with conspicuous variations, you have an opening bar, but each subsequent bar is different & tells a story. I like the original, but it's awfully impressive what Al did with the song and video. It does a good job of showing some aspects of Amish life. If you tour Amish country, you really can get a quilt at a discount price.
