This is my rescue to a T. Major anxiety, everything the same except for barking (she does not bark all). I’ll throw in a monkey wrench and say my dog is not very motivated by treats, toys, or food. She will “train” if she wants, when she wants, for as long as she wants. She doesn’t like kongs, or bones (she has many but relocates them around the house only). She has terrible recall and only comes to you if she wants something. Will run into the street if not on a leash. She has flunked out of dog training for simply not wanting to engage or for being wild. She’s turning 5 (not exactly sure of age) this year. Please help 😢. She’s family to us and I want her to live a fulfilled, happy life.

I watch his show every saturday and bought the book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxGQVgV21bQ7B9b9duQ1ByImyT9xHbjOKq because i like his method. He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.

The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

There isn’t any other training videos quite like this. My 18 month old male intact 100 pound GS still behaves like this pup. I’m doing my best to desensitize him to anything with wheels, people, dogs, cats, squirrels etc. he is crate trained. I really appreciate you showing the raw realities you’re facing with a breed that loves to chase and bite things. You’ve given me a new Hope! My entire family wants me to sell him. But I don’t think anyone would buy him the way he is right now and he would end up being put down. So I’ll continue on doing my best with a head halter taking him every night to a park with high-value treats and try to desensitize him after one hour of hard exercise.

LOVE this series!!! Here in Australia we have so many rescue dogs that get constantly re-homed because they have not been taught any manners and their previous owners haven’t realised just how much work goes into high energy breeds. We see so many Bully breeds with behaviour issues. I’m also a vet nurse and shepherds are the #1 “noodle” breed (our affectionate term for unruly dogs) that come into the clinic and are SO difficult to handle. It’s not their fault, a lot of owners really don’t understand just how much energy they really have. If it’s not directed in the right place, it comes out as anxiety, fear aggression & destructive behaviour.
Thank you for showing all sides of training, incl just how much work goes into getting those tiny little wins!

Prong collars are not harsh corrections. If you get a good brand (hermes sprenget) Otherwise the dog would be yelping, crying etc. prong collars distribute even pressure instead of choking a dog out with a flat collar and potentially damaging their trachea. You just have to know how to apply it properly. E collars (good ones not shock collars) are great to get a dog’s attention as well. I wish people would educate themselves and realize they are tools that can help dogs to train them. So many dogs who otherwise would’ve been euthanized have been trained with them. And you don’t have to use them for the rest of their lives. You should open your mind and not limit a dog’s training. Upstate canine academy on youtube has many videos educating people about prong and e collars and demonstrating tom davis helping reactive or aggressive dogs.

For me the thing that helped the most with the crate training was turning the crate into a dark cave/den with a cover while leaving the door open, started doing that when she was only a few months old and now every time its nap time or sleepy time she shuffles into the crate on her own to sleep. Its helped build that association when it comes time to run an errant or similar when she has to be kept in the crate for a bit while I'm away in that she will just go to sleep for the duration of time shes put in the crate.

    • @colleenanne4032
      @colleenanne4032 3 года назад +2

That's what we did too. We pushed the crate up to the corner in our bedroom so two sides were secure and we left the door open so she could go in and out. Then we kind of turned it into a game, we would put a kong with peanut butter and her food in it (put it in the freezer first so it took her longer) she would go in literally one minute intervals with the door open, then shut and for her meals. She had been bounced around homes and was frantic in the crate but she was also excellent at getting into things that were dangerous for her if we didn't watch her every second. And since we had jobs and school I needed her to be unsupervised and safe or 2 to 3 hours at a time we needed her to be comfortable in the crate.. It took about a month but it was important that she was comfortable and safe.

Zak I just subscribed recently to your channel. I left a comment on the first episode of this reality training. I don't know how to thank you enough for how you train dogs. I totally resonate with your sensibilities regarding dog training. I'm the woman who has a service dog that I owner trained. I used very old techniques because I trained for 20 years but I'm 62 years old now. Back then we used E collars. of course using them correctly, and no treats were ever part of being a dog trainer. it's really come a long way and I love how you represent positive reinforcement training, because you stick in there with reality. What it's REALLY like to train a dog. And you show here's what you do if it goes wrong. Finally. I have been on RUclips for years I cannot relate to any of the other very well known dog training channels. I just don't flow with what they're about and most of them show positive reinforcement training with a perfectly trained dog on the task they are showing on the video. it doesn't show a realistic dog. A dog that isn't perfectly trained when you get it and how to keep going in little increments to achieve results. You are a gift to me as I am going to be training my new little service dog. And I need it to be simple to understand and simple to know how to properly attain excellent results. I'm so excited Now I feel ready when my new dog comes that I will rescue to become my service dog. Have a good evening !!

My boyfriend and I got a 1 year old rescue German shepherd that acts a lot like her. Now my boyfriend isn't helping me train him and I have zero experience training any type of dog. I have watched two videos now and really can't believe how much these are already helping me train my dog. So great full for these!

I love how raw and real this is! I have a rescue who shares many similar patterns with Moira. He's a sweetie and the biggest cuddle bug in the world, but when it comes to distractions, it's been a full year of constant struggles. The very end of the video where Moira is reactive and Zak holds her by the harness is EXACTLY what I deal with all the time. High-pitched screeching and pulling is by far the hardest thing to get him out of. My dog is now known in the neighborhood as a "showman" because everybody knows who's responsible for the screeching. It's pretty embarrassing! I'm looking forward to more episodes with Moira to see how she does! I would love to do anything I could to help my dude out.

For me, this is the most relatable in all of Zak’s series. It so realistic and so practical. Seeing and relating to everything he is experiencing and realizing that I’m not a total failure and that like Zak you have to preserve and train, train, train. Here in the this series, training is not always perfect and a process whereby Zak is perfect when imperfect. Well done! Encouraging to all of us.

I keep seeing ppl saying they were a bit scared by her in episode 1. I have a ten month 120 pound mastiff, and his behavior is exactly like this. Not fun when you’re a younger teenage girl who’s super small for your age. He’s not aggressive, but he jumps and bites when he gets overexcited. I weigh less than him, so nooot good. He knows sit, down, and bed (placement command), so that’s a plus, and he’s good on leash. It’s playtime when all that falls apart, and he goes crazy. He’s a sweetheart, but he’s still a puppy, and has that over-the-top, hyper mindset.

If Moira doesn't do well in crates, she'll just be a bed dog. She looks like a great cuddler.
Separately, this series has already started to help me with my dog, Ginny. I am teaching her "let go." She already knows "leave it" and "look at me." I've also realized that it's easier to train a dog on what to do instead of what not to do. My dog, Ginny, is very reactive. When we walk on the trail, she tries to lunge at people. For a long time, I was just pulling her away and saying firmly, "No." Now, I've been teaching her that every time I stop on our walk, she should automatically sit. So we stop, I put her in a sit and love on her/give her lots of praise for being a good girl. I make her stay in the sit position until the people pass with some distance, and then we resume our walk. This has also helped her to stop becoming overly excited because that's when she starts to pull on her leash the most.

I am actively training for a Newfydoodle for gait balance (he has already passed family manners) since I have Ehlers Danilos Syndrome and have found your tubes to be very beneficial. My trainers are great, but getting the extra information is fantastic since I am a 65 year old lady with an already 80 lb powerhouse at 7 months old. His strength is what I got him for, but learning how to harness it for my personal utilization is another thing. Many of ‘reality checks’ art fantastic! Thank you and “Now, on with the show….”

I appreciate how REAL this is. I think many of us get frustrated because we arent dog trainers and seeing someone who always has every answer and a perfect dog who listens every time makes it easier for us "non trainers" to give up when what works for one dog doesnt for another. I'm dealing with that when Moira learned so quickly to "let go" and I sprained my wrist and had bloodied, blistered hands after attempting the same with my pit bull BUT, seeing you trouble shoot and adjust for each dogs unique temperament and personality shows me that it CAN work, I just have to reevaluate and adjust for my own enthusiastic baby. Just remember we support you, because I know I cant be the only one thinking this. You got this!!👍👏❤

This series is seriously great and I''m just at the part where you are teaching Moira how to "Stay" using the toy and I just love how you explain everything and how what you do is really on a case-by-case basis. Anyway! I'm learning a lot and for that I'm grateful!

Some families are " my dog isn't allowed on the furniture " people, and others are " of course the dog is allowed on the furniture, how else would i get cuddles?" People. I'm definitely the second. I have anxiety and my dog ( although she makes plenty use of her crate when nessary) preforms a job by helping me sleep well with her calming presence. But thats information the rescue can use to match her to her perfect home! I hope all the information you are gathering will help the rescue so much!

Crate training was a no go for my pup, too. We actually started with your Pupford course when puppy came home four months ago and it has been a fantastic foundational course. It was good to hear you say "crating might not be for her", as I thought I was failing massively in that area. It's nice to have an indication that for some dogs, that might just not be the route to go. Great new series!

Such an useful series! Kudos to you Zak for putting this effort out without filtering out the failures. This helps a ton in building the confidence of a dog owner to start training. This shows that ‘It is possible’ at any stage. Thank you for this series & all your good work. I’m thinking to get my first lab shortly. Your videos have increased my dog training confidence. I live in an apartment 4th floor & I’m at least 5 minutes away from a grass yard/road. That’s the only thing still holding me from getting a lab puppy. Potty training is the only worry I’ve. Hope I can make a decision soon.

The part where you had to physically reroute her movement lol you basically became a puzzle for her to work out in her mind. My GSD still does it daily and she's a little over 6 years old! She loves puzzles, hide and seek, and other similar games. Rainy day fun usually includes me hiding pieces of food throughout the house and telling her to go find it. Repeatedly. Until she gets tired. Eventually. Thank you so much for this series. I know I've said it several times here and on insta, but seriously. GSDs are a serious handful, especially if people think they're getting a perfect and gorgeous couch dog! These Czech lines are built for work, not yucky snuggly time lol (although as they age, they will snuggle and cuddle some until they get bored)
