    When I saw it live Andre made eye contact with me when he sang “those who go, they don’t come back” and pointed directly to me and I died on the spot.

    I know a lot of people are upset they took Orpheus out of this song, but personally I'm glad they did because from a storytelling point of view, it doesn't make sense for him to know the truth about Hadestown at this point, so it makes much more sense for Persephone, someone who has seen and condemned Hadestown from the start, to have those lines. Orpheus hasn't been there yet when this song takes place, so the only ones who know the truth about Hadestown are Persephone, the Fates, and Hermes

      If Orpheus has been talking with Persephone and Hermes for the summer, then yes, he would know a little about Hadestown from a story telling perspective. The lyrics were/are biased against Hades, and it's part of the reason "Epic" never works until Orpheus talks directly to Hades and gets his side of the story too.
      Also taking away Hades' "All-Aboard" and count makes him lose some of his intimidation, because a man wouldn't be able to know they were singing about him- it reinforces that Hades is no man, he is a god, and can know and do whatever he wants.

    • @UmbraticForest
      @UmbraticForest 5 лет назад +58

      @@jessicahill6207 That's fair, but I still think it makes more sense for Hermes and Persephone to be talking about Hadestown, rather than Orpheus just because they are they only ones who have been there and are therefore the primary sources, whereas Orpheus would just be a secondary source.
      I do agree with you though, I think it worked better when Hades said all aboard, since it definitely makes him seem more authoritative and controlling, BUT since Hermes is the train conductor (I think) it makes sense for him to have the line

    • @Willowswispss
      @Willowswispss 5 лет назад +19

      It does make sense from a storyline perspective but also I like the change in the actual show since we get to see reeve and Eva do their own thing and be in love rather then sing eventhough I do miss their lines in this. However the backing track on this doesn’t slap as hard as in the actual show or the off broadway version.

    I really like how this is the gods’ big song. Like yeah Orpheus dragging the hell out of Hades in the NYTW version was fun and all, but it’s equally as fun having Persephone, Hermès, and the Fates lecture Orpheus and Eurydice and the audience on what Hadestown really is. Plus having Orpheus know nothing about the Underworld at the start makes him being broken down by its horrors and becoming a political revolutionary far more compelling to watch imo

      Mars Bars It’s not unprofessional, it’s literally part of the process. EVERY show goes through changes over time. That’s what previews and out of town trials are FOR. They’re tweaking the show so that it will hopefully become the best version of itself by the time it hits Broadway. Hell, some shows go through massive changes AFTER it hits Broadway, and some evolve over the years. Go read up on The Scarlet Pimpernel! They’re on version 4! The cast album (which I adore) is literally so different from the version that currently exists, because it wasn’t working for audiences. Les Miserables has changed and removed lines and themes over the years (listen to the original London cast, then listen to the complete symphonic recording, and then actually go see the show live because there are a ton of differences). You can find recordings of the Hamilton previews with vastly different lyrics and songs that didn’t make the final cut, some if which have been released on the mixed tapes (like First Burn, and Congratulations). No musical starts off perfect. Yes, sometimes you’ll find something that you wish hadn’t been changed (I personally love the 1994 NYTW version of RENT’s “Goodbye Love” and wish they had kept more of those original lyrics), but the changes are usually there in order to tighten the story, themes, character arcs, and emotions in the musical. They make changes to work on the flow from song to song and scene to scene. It’s okay to like an earlier version better, but don’t say that it’s unprofessional to go through so many changes, because that frankly just means that you’re unfamiliar with the process of making a musical.
      Edit: I can’t remember exactly where I found this (I think it might have been a video of the making of the soundtrack), but I recall Lin Manuel Miranda saying that he was tweaking Hamilton up until the recording of the soundtrack and that he was forcing himself to stop once they were done because if not, he would never stop changing things.

      Every show does this, the difference is that while most shows only release the Broadway/Original Cast recording, Hadestown has had now three albums release from concept album to Workshop to the Broadway. This along with bootlegs allow the changes normally done behind closed doors to be seen by the general public.

      Sarah Hamilfan Haven’t read it, but it was probably mentioned in other places. When Hamilton was heading to Broadway/freshly on Broadway, I watched a ton of production videos on it (I love theatre, and have done both acting work and back stage work locally, so it’s a passion of mine to see how shows comes together). Super excited because I actually get to see Hamilton’s touring cast tomorrow!

      Sarah Hamilfan I’m super excited. My brother-in-law saw it in Chicago when he was there on a business trip and was telling us about it, and on Easter he surprised my fiancee and I with tickets for the four of us (him, his boyfriend, and my fiancee and I) to see it in Austin. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack since it came out, so it’s going to be an amazing experience to finally see it all live.

    • @CalmBlue
      @CalmBlue 5 лет назад +72

      I kind of understand it though. The verses that they originally had kind of undermine their characters. It makes their motivations more reasonable if they are relatively naive about the true nature of Hadestown. If Eurydice is really that optimistic about it then why hasn't she tried to go there before? If Orpheus knows so much about.how it works then how isn't he more prepared to prevent Eurydice from going there? They sacrificed Moments(TM) for more consistent characterisation and I can't really fault them for that.

    Sorta majorly annoyed that they took Orpheus out of this song. I get that he has never been down to Hadestown, so he doesn't know for sure, but he regularly interacts with Persephone, who hates it down there and surely would've had SOME words to say about it over the years. I thought it was implied that Orpheus' knowledge about Hades and Hadestown was from her and just general rumor. At least let him still say "Mr. Hades is a mean ol' boss!" It still makes sense story-wise for him to know that, I think.
    Leaving in "and everybody looked and everybody saw, it was the man that they'd been singin' about" seems more like an oversight now, since not everyone did sing about him, it was literally just Hermes, Persephone, and The Fates. Them getting quiet and tense and looking to see him wouldn't make sense from a character standpoint, since Hermes interacts with him on the regular, Persephone hates the man he became, and The Fates are The Fates, they have more power over him than he does over them, on account of them being The Fates.
    Also, if Euridyce is there and giving her opinion- "Kinda makes you wonder how it feels..."-, let Orpheus be there and also give his opinion!
    TL;DR: they should've at least let Orpheus keep one line, if they're gonna make it seem like everyone was there to see Persephone off. The song still slaps, but I'm kinda peeved. I'll take my 2017 version of this song, thanks.

    The backing score doesn't slap as hard as the off-Broadway, and the whistle sounds demented ngl
