So the entire song he's kind of just noticing how much happier the girl is without him. "You look so happy when I'm not with you." But she's still affected by him, "a single teardrop falling from your eye." I feel like the song is more upbeat because usually happy songs are upbeat. Maybe he's trying to convince her and himself that they're better off alone (expresses this through music). "I realize that I'm much too late. And you deserve someone better." Even though they both still care about each other (expresses this through lyrics).
