Thank you for the info. I had my first garden last year, built a small greenhouse this spring and expanded my garden. I found a CSA farm and I've been working there since April. Met a wonderful woman and we are planning on starting up our own market garden. Your videos have been hugely beneficial to us. Thank you for everything you do and being a big inspiration to us.
Thanks Josh for another educational and entertaining video!! Just one of the many things I really appreciate is you always mention the idea of CONTEXT. This is what works for YOU in YOUR area/climate. Chefs YOU sell to like/want/need this. So important to be reminded of this when we're all searching for inspiration/information! Really saves the time lost (and heartache felt) from failing with something not suited to your particular situation.
You are a God send I am going to be doing a farm stand for income and to at least feed us and other people and I just really needed this now if they will send my tax refund so I can purchase my seeds thank you so much this is conformation to keep moving forward to me thank you again God bless
Thanks for the info. Am working on my farming skills now and hopefully next season (spring) I will be able to set up my table at the local market. I will be watching for your video on growing carrots.
Great video! People love to do farming for different reasons; to some, it is a job, and to others, it’s a relaxing hobby. We actually sell properties that can be used as farms. This info is helpful for those who like to start farming as a business.
My simple lettuce blend is open pollination types of: Early Prizehead, black seed simpson, and a little grand rapids. Cheap, but good. Muir is my choice along with crisp head, (my wife likes head lettuce).
I enjoyed you video. It was very informative. I live on the other of Winston-Salem and my wife and I are looking at starting our on garden on a small scale to start with but would like to do something like what you have going.
Hey Josh! Love your videos, I learn a lot from it. My fiancé and I have our garden for a few years now about 1700 square feet and grow tons of peppers. Last two years we got hit with pepper maggots. Have you had this problem, and how would you recommend dealing with this issue. We try to stay chemical free. Thank you!
Hey josh always love your videos. Questions for you if you get a minute to answer I’d appreciate it. I copied your trellis to make you jealous for cucumbers. Been doing Corinto from johnnys the last 2 years. It’ seams like when I prune all the runners they die from disease easily. Any advice? I get a great 3-4 weeks out of them and always first to market with them but then they die back. I use wobblers to water maybe that’s introducing a problem idk. Thanks in advance.
If I was working full time on the farm then yes, I could manage the three tunnels. I will be able to handle the three tunnels part time in the fall thru spring, but it in the summer it would be tough.
Josh, I too have been growing Mukom carrots, what Jang roller have you had luck with? The X I haven’t had good luck with, too heavy seed drop. Do you like the XY or the XYY? Anybody else out there?
My carrots looked good but not amazing this year. One of my market managers told me 'it doesn't matter if they look kind of bad, you have carrots so you're good.'
Hey Josh, have you run the numbers on green onions? I wonder what you get per bunch as in my experience they aren't very profitable due to the post harvest time.
Great video love your content. I despise myself a little for asking what I'm about to ask but here goes: about what price are you getting from restaurants for carrots? I ask because we are in very similar contexts. I am in central NC outside of Greensboro and I have dialed in fall/winter carrots, am getting a barrel root washer delivered in a few weeks, and have planted more carrots than ever (20 beds 30in x 100ft) which is half my production area. I've been getting $4 a bunch or $4 a lb at market. I'm thinking of keeping that price even for wholesale since they are such a hot item and doing 4.50 or 5 for colorful mix carrots. That's my plan but I was thinking if other folks were getting something like $8 a lb or more then I should rethink my strategy before dipping my toe in the wholesale market. Sorry for the novel
When I start my lettuce indoors it gets really leggy. I think I have a good set up ( grow lights, good seed starting mix). Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
Have you found or tried any lettuce from Osborne’s that you like or recommend? I’ve been happy with other seeds and seems like they have lettuce similar to Salanova, but with a different name.
Hi Josh...can Eggplant work in the Deep Compost/No Till beds? Am converting a good part of our beds into the Deep Compost system...also, typically grow lots of Brassicas, Cauliflower/Broccoli/Cabbages, and yes, I make profit on them. Anyone doing these in the Deep Compost beds? Certified Organic, so rotations are important and required...and will need more area in the new system. LOVE IT, btw
@@JoshSattinFarming so would you cut and leave the roots or pull? It would take so long for these to decompose...and pulling would create lots of soil disturbance
What do you mean when you say that hydroponic lettuce is a complete different product? If you mean its not as good in taste/nutrition isnt it possible to grow lettuce hydroponic with added micronutrients?
Your pollination looks surprisingly well. I'd thought your seasonal crops that rely on pollination would maybe struggle a little. Since this is a new factor that wasn't present with your greens, roots, onios... Good job.
It’s so nice to hear a pro gardener with beet issues. I love beets but always fail with them. I’ll try transplanting this year!
Also, great video. Many people forget to run their farms like a true business

Absolutely! All we can do is share what works and doesn't work for each of us.
That's the best soil mix I've found! Rock n roll
would love to hear how you approach restaurants to sell and such ! Growing stuff is one thing but getting folks to buy your stuff is another.

Love watching your videos. You share such great info that’s so helpful to beginners so they can be successful. Thank you for sharing what you know.
you never disappoint. great content
You know, I never thought to transplant the beets..

Thanks Josh! When you say you “gave up” on direct seeding beets, why is that?
I wanted more consistent germination and yield. Transplanting gives me that.
We heat our greenhouse and grow tomatoes peppers cucumbers eggplants zucchini year round

Awesome tips, coming into spring here in New Zealand, just transplanted some beets. First season really getting into growing seriously. Cheers Mike
Another great guide for the urban farm/market garden community for one of its champions. Keep up the the good work brother, you're crushing it!
Hi josh, your products look delicious. I was wondering, can you still work the whole farm on your own once you have the 3rd tunnel in full production?
If I was working full time on the farm then yes, I could manage the three tunnels. I will be able to handle the three tunnels part time in the fall thru spring, but it in the summer it would be tough.
Yer awesome dude. Thank you.

Great video. How do you work out your prices. Do you have a simple formula? Debs
Hey Josh, have you run the numbers on green onions? I wonder what you get per bunch as in my experience they aren't very profitable due to the post harvest time.
Yes they are profitable. I am not selling them currently but used to get $2/bunch or $8/#.
Do you transplant or direct seed your lettuce? And do you prefer one over the other if you have tried both.
He transplants them
I always transplant my lettuce.

Great video Josh ! where can I purchase that no till growers baseball cap ?
Beets are extremely expensive here in NZ 5 to 7 nz $ a killo😮
I want that tool in the beginning
Hey Josh That is awesome Man I love your vids learn so much Any idea why my beats are so leggy?
Nice video
What types of restaurants are you selling to?
When I start my lettuce indoors it gets really leggy. I think I have a good set up ( grow lights, good seed starting mix). Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
Leggy starts are caused by not having enough light.
Have you found or tried any lettuce from Osborne’s that you like or recommend? I’ve been happy with other seeds and seems like they have lettuce similar to Salanova, but with a different name.
I have not yet. They do have some good alternatives. I would give them a call and ask for recommendations.
shizzle... we just grow all these on our farm and are not profitable...
but thanks for the input

Yes, you can grow eggplants in a DCMS.

How do you package your loose-leaf lettuce and not have it get soft and wilty? That has been my biggest struggle with lettuce.
Please check out the videos listed in the description.
Ice water
What do you mean when you say that hydroponic lettuce is a complete different product?
If you mean its not as good in taste/nutrition isnt it possible to grow lettuce hydroponic with added micronutrients?
How can you sell to restaurants when your produce is not approved for human consumption? Aren't these restaurants taking a huge risk?
Hydroponic lettuce beats anything you have to offer. On a small scale.... hydroponics on a small scale is the best tasting imho
