That aluminum housing is pretty slick. I would prefer it without the cutaways on the lower front corners though. Makes it look like it's going to transform or something.
Great build tutorial. I personally like the flip design of the original. I still enjoy how far you have come with your builds. Please keep up the great work!
I was not sure whether to get this kit or not, but your helping little 3D printed parts finally convinced me! Thank you for all the work of designing the parts and making this video.
Been waiting for this video after speaking to helder about a few things. Thanks for the help. Just placed an order from your shop. Keep doing what you do for the community.
I also added the Helder power cleaner and only found out that it wasn't going to fit when I was doing my final assembly, I ended up removing it not knowing it could be moved up and still fit, so I might go back and try it again, thanks for the info! Edit: I also have the new edition of the Boxy Pixel shell (Rev D) which has minor tweaks and added features such as clips for the L and R springs and a fix for the light pipes, so I'm not sure if the area for the power cleaner has also been altered in a way that moving the power cleaner up will be a solve, I guess I'll have to give it a try.
Im surprised you had all these issues w/ the case. But this was also 5 months ago, nacho someone on youtube made a video about this recently and he didn't mention any of those issues so I wonder if they were resolved. Sadly I sold my GBA collection with all my retro stuff a few years ago, at the time the money was nice but I had all the classics, but now with this new design I wish I kept them.
Wow.... absolutely amazing mod 😍 but it is definitely not easy!!! Skill level 11+ ! The amount of tools you need is a lot as well, i dream of being able to make something like this ... open a shop man and sell them I would buy one! 👍🏼
I want to be able to love the hingeless mod, but a combination of all the extra guestwork to make all the bits fit in properly, the form factor of your fingers being butted up hard against the back for the shoulder buttons, the inability to use accessories like the wireless adaptor, and the down below cartridge positioning(I've found myself playing GB and GBC games alot recently) makes me not want to use it because I don't want to bump my Pokémon crystal with 6 shinies.
I bought your 3D printed parts for my boxy pixel build. Overall, I'm really happy with them, but I had a few minor issues. I used the same GBA SP motherboard model you did in the video, but I have revision 2 of the Boxy Pixel SP Unhinged shell. -The top of my headphone jack bracket was hitting against D6 on my board & preventing it from properly seating in the shell. Since it's 3D printed, it was very easy to just trim the top protrusion from the bracket, & it still holds great. You may want to look into that for future prints though. -The light pipes look great, but they're not staying in place after assembly. They just kind of tip back into the shell. Any recommendations for securing them better? Should I just use some double sided tape? I'm also looking at adding Helder's power cleaner. I have the part, but haven't gotten around to installing it yet. Your video gives me hope that I can make it fit. I really don't want to modify the shell if I don't have to.
It won’t fit unless you take off at lease 1 mm from the back underside battery housing. I just attempted the install 2 days ago and recorded it at 16x speed if you want to see for yourself what happened. The power amp does a great job on its own and I recommend it 💯 sounds clean and clear but most importantly LOUD AF
Put the smallest amount of super glue on the light pipes to secure them. And I bent the tabs on the audio jack down to the side at a right angle then after soldering the wires I capped it with the kapton tape. Hope everything went well for you!
Thank you for mentioning the helder drop-in batt. One of my OEM batteries got puffy to the point the battery cover got bent outward and all I could find in terms of replacements were sketchy aftermarket ones. I have one in my ags-101, but I'm not happy about it, especially with how volatile li-ions are and it being cheap making me very nervous. Edit: Also my OEM one that isnt bloated is cacked and turns off the 101 if the brightness is turned up(stock screen)
Unfortunately the aluminum shell is incompatible with the GameCube Link Cable. I tend to use my GBA’s as controllers when playing GBA games on the GameBoy Player, so this is a bit of a dealbreaker for me. I noticed that the aluminum shell had to leave out a lot of basic features simply because it was impossible to machine them out. I definitely recommend machining out the shell in individual parts to fix that, or maybe even using plastic for some of the smaller components. The spring holders for the triggers could easily be put into a single thin piece of plastic that just plops into an indentation in the shell , and the holes for the GameCube Link Cable could be put there in more or less the same way Nintendo did it; separate half of the holes into a new separate piece of aluminum so that they can be machined individually, then either weld them before selling them or include screws to put them in place. As it is, the Aluminum shell feels like it downgrades the GBA SP in some ways. The metal shell/buttons and the better form factor for adult hands probably do feel nice, but they’re not necessary for the GBA to fully function. I’d rather have the full functionality of the GBA, as well as a way to use the springs for the triggers that won’t stretch them out over time, rather than the premium feeling of the shell if I had to choose. Not to mention the fact that the shell as it is has problems. The fact that this dude had to 3D print a ton of custom parts to get around the mistakes of the shell tells me that it still needs work. I’d rather pay a higher premium for an aluminum shell that doesn’t remove features or requires work-arounds.
Do you have a complete package kit for someone who doesn't want to add all the individual pieces I have an SP that I would like to mod I would like to do this project in my group DIY PC Builders. I would even link your store.
Very nice. Personally, though, I'd probably go for the original GBA style. It seems a little silly to sacrifice the folding of the SP but not opt for the wider form of the GBA. It seems like leaning into the GameBoy Color design a bit more would have let things be spaced out more so that you wouldn't have to cram as much. But it is neat looking.
There are just so many design flaws with this BoxyPIxel shell that are kind of unacceptable considering the expensive price. I think if you are considering one of these wait for RetroCNC's version.
I have to agree with the Boxy Pixel design overall their products. I’ve noticed the tolerances (as mentioned here in some cases, as well as my own GBC) aren’t good. The halves don’t always lineup and mine is off center from the top to the bottom making a lip between both halves. I took it apart to see if there was something going on and it’s just off center for some reason. They even painter tapped the IPS screen to the case… awesome work. I’ll never buy from BP again. Refuse at the price points with how inconsistent their production is.
I went original hardware for the games. I just wanna put the game in the slot boot it up. It just feels good when something is ancient and still works like new.
Have you tried the GBA Neo Geo Pocket Color Emulator(for EVERDRIVE or EX Flash Omega) with the GBA accelerator? It is quite slow regularly, so I suspect it would be near perfect with the accelerator set to 1.5 speed!
Nice vid!!! Is it possible to place a usb-c charging connector instead of the old nintendo charging connector on a regular GBA SP? Greetings from The Netherlands.
Where else can I can get the headphone jack? The one Wermy posted is out of stock, and I cant find it anywhere else. Maybe theres a similar one i could use instead? Please help.
If you connect the USB-C charger the way you did it, can I still use the regular charger to charge the lithium battery? And the other way around, can I use the type C charger to charge the regular battery? I just want to make sure to be cautious about it and not burn my console. Great mod btw!
I'm having trouble installing the GBA SP Power cleaner. I installed the new power switch and the USB C Port that you added, not the Boxy Pixel one, and they both worked fine. After I added the Power Cleaner, the SP wouldn't turn on. Help please!
hey can some one tell me if ther enough space for a battery with the messuring from 50x34x10mm? i life in germany and the website dont ship the batterie international :(
Don't know if you found your answer yet or not, but 34mm is a little bit too big. There are some 103050 ones you can order from aliexpress, I did the same thing, and they ship to germany :)
very good, it would be perfect if you modified the position of buttons A and B, for example the super mario games in snes the position of buttons Y and B is perfect to play holding Y to run and Jump on B, it would be the same bosition in GBA but in place of Y it was B in place of B o A, so the gameplay was perfect, but I saw that it is not possible due to the use of the original GBA card
This is a pretty random question but here it goes: I'm trying to connect the power to a Playstation (PSX) laser to the mainboard but I don't have the original cable. I can't find any JST connectors to fit it. I tried PH2.0, SH1.00, XH1.25, and XH2.54 and nothing fits. I don't know much about these connectors and what other sizes there are. These are what I found by looking randomly around. Any ideas? What might the exact specifications of it be? How should I search for it? Thank you!
I have a question. What do you recommend for thicker guage wire? I work on industrial equipment and a lot of the time my soldering iron can't heat enough from the bottom to pull the solder down through the wires. Edit: and I'm not talking 00 battery cables or anything.
Possibly you can help me. I have been scouring the internet as well as RUclips itself for about 2 weeks now looking for a good Electronics site for beginners. Of the "for beginners" sites I've found, all of them seem to assume that you've already been through 5 years of courses. Also, they don't explain what is going on and then they hide everything behind something called a breadboard, which is useless to students since they cannot see what's going on. Do you know of any good Electronics sites that, for example, explain exactly how to translate a schematic into real world physical action? Anything you can suggest would be appreciated.
I'm always interested in your videos about modding systems and creating Raspberry Pi devices but I'm too intimidated to start a project myself. Could you make a video on what projects you recommend for beginners?
Honestly, if these cases had the GameCube GBA adapter clip slots I'd be more inclined to get one. I wouldn't be able to play multiplayer Four Swords Adventures as easily with only one compatible GBA.

I Just recently upgraded my gbasp with an ips Display, a new Case and a new batterie....and its really worth it.
Ooooh that's really nice! I don't have the equipment or skill to do this but if I could this would be on the list to do!
I didn't know that the original hardware could be modified to speed up gameplay. Very useful!

They need to turn the whole board upside down and reroute cables so that way games go in at the top

How well does it, get put in the pocket on the go?
Do you sell the custom led light pipes that you made for this? Or do you know if with the V2 shell if the original works?
The light pipes from Sudomod don't work with V2 Boxy Pixel shell. I made the error of buying them.
