What is My Face Shape?
Before you can find your most flattering hairstyle, you need to identify what your face shape is. To do so, try taking a photo of yourself facing the camera with your hair tied back. Then, trace around the outside of your face and see which shape it most closely resembles. Alternatively, you can try measuring your face, focusing on the widths of your brow, cheekbones and jawline, and the length of your face from forehead to chin, to find its proportions. By doing so, you should be able to see which shape your best match is. For example, if your face is the same length and width, it is likely either square or round. Or, if your face becomes wider from the forehead to the jawline, it’s probably a triangle shape.
1. Oval face.
Women with oval face shape should not have boring, straight and long hair. For woman with wavy or curly hair and oval face the best haircut is the layered haircut because it will accentuate your cheekbones.
2. Round face.
If you have round face and straight hair the best haircut for you is the shoulder length because it will accentuate your cheekbones. It is the same haircut for wavy or curly hair but the only the difference is that for wavy or curly hair the shoulder length haircut should be layered in order to get pyramid shape - which will contrast the roundness. The structure of the bones will be accentuated this way.
3. Heart-shaped face.
Heart-shaped faces are wider at the brow and narrower at the chin, which typically adds up to killer cheekbones. Here, a few guidelines for the genetically blessed.
Women that have straight hair and heart-shaped face can experiment with their hair, they should try the mega popular pixie haircut. Also the multi-layered bob is another good haircut for them. For wavy or curly hair layered haircut is the best.
4. Square face.
If you have straight hair the shoulder length haircut is the best for you. This face shape has the effect of big forehead and many women try to do something about it. It is the same for wavy or curly hair - the shoulder length haircut is the best although you can also try layered haircut with having a few short wisps falling through your forehead.
5. Long faces.
- You can always reduce the length of your face at the expense of your forehead. If it’s covered with bangs, the line of the hair growth is not visible, and your face appears shorter. Blunt cut straight or slightly slanting bangs work good, so do waves pushed on the forehead. When considering the ideal length for your bangs, keep in mind proportions. When bangs take 1/3 of the face length, it’s believed to be the best possible proportion.
- Try to create width and body on the sides of your face with horizontal and diagonal lines. Curls, waves, the even bottom lines and horizontal layers create an illusion of width, so desirable in your case. If you stick to a bob haircut, do not make the back much shorter than the front. This technique creates sharp angles, making your face seem even longer than it is.
- Avoid excessive volume on top, long straight tresses along your face, especially without bangs, high ponytails or other high updos and layer-free long styles. If you do not like full-on layers, ask your stylist to layer only the tresses that frame your face in order to escape a drawing-down effect.
- Color can also play into your hands. Highlights enhance width and create dimension for your side tresses. If your hair is long, try ombre: lighter ends won’t draw your face down either.
6. Diamond Faces.

If your forehead and chin are narrower than the central part of your face across your cheekbones, and it's angular, you are a diamond.
