      Yeah it was magic growing up in those days so I'm glad I got to do that. People perceive things so differently today but those of us that came out of the 60s and 70s were very free spirit fun-loving people and not tied to cell phones Etc. It's good to have a cell phone and a computer so that we can watch these things again, in fact I have watched races that I was at all those years ago on here LOL magic days that went by too quickly

    My dad took us to a couple local 1/8 mile and 1/10 strips in the late 60's to early 70's. My first trip ever to a 1/4 mile strip was to Maple Grove for its season opener in 1973; the main event: Best 3 out of 5 Match Race between Grumpy Jenkins and Dandy Dick Landy. On what was probably Grumpy's home track, Landy took him in 3 straight races. They put on a great show and that made me a pro stock fan.

      Yeah but Bills vega right here is the reason why pro stock sucks today. Landys dodge was a real dart sport with a hemi and roll cage, the vega was a tube chassis with a vega body stuck over it. They allowed him to do it because it was a small block, which wasn't any disadvantage because the car was feather light. Those rules stuck and well, you have what you have today because of it and that vega was the one that did it!

    A little known fact is the NHRA wanted to slow up the Hemi cars in SS/A because the Ford and Chevy guys were looking very bad. The more weight they put on the Hemi cars the quicker they went. So the NHRA declassified SS/A as a pro class and invented Pro Stock and allowed light weight tube chassis, small blocks aluminum engine components , etc. and a lot of fiberglass. The Hemi cars were forced out of Pro Stock for being too dominant. It wasn't until much later the big block Hemi cars were allowed back but had the run new NHRA sanctioned engine architecture which again made the Hemis noncompetitive.,
    If you want anything screwed up the NHRA will do it for you.

    In 1966,Jenkins ran a L79-optioned, 327/350hp Chevy II. Its light weight placed the Nova in NHRA’s A/Stock class, pitting it directly against the 426 Hemi. This huge mismatch propelled Jenkins to legendary status with his giant killing, small-block Chevy II. Jenkins also blew away NHRA’s Hemi-dominated A/S record to 11.66!

    Back in those days even in Pro Stock there was still some place for fan identification. A Mopar had its shape, it's aerodynamics and it's head design as did the others. Today drivers in NASCAR for example are actually driving not Fords Chevy or Mopars and Toyotas but rather NASCARS. Looks to be pretty much the same in drag racing. Corporate meat packages piloting clone cars. Yawn.

      I agree 100%. If Nascar and others would only realize that it's a big reason why their attendance is down. The manufacturers war was always a humongous part of the sport. People usually took their favorite manufacturer and then chose their favorite driver from there. I don't think that is the case anymore. I can't sit through a whole race nowadays. I have better things to do and I have RUclips to look back at the exciting racing that used to be if I want to.

    Rick and I went to Delta cable in 1976 to see if we could get the tapes. We were hoping to also get the tape of the match race between the James and Fischer AA/GS Willys and Ray Romund's AA/A Corvette, but they couldn't find it. They only found this one, and told us that the others may be gone because they often taped over their old videos. The original tapes were 1" format, so they made us one in beta. I brought a beta copy when I moved to California, and had it copied to vhs in 1979.

      Darryl, Delta Cable also broadcast the races at Mission for a couple years when the new track first opened in 92. They called the show "Smoke and Thunder" and it seems only the lucky buggers in Delta (like me) could see it on TV. I asked them if they saved them and was told they changed the format (digital now?) and had no way to play the old stuff.After the Boundary Bay track closed there was illegal racing on the same strip about 1980-81, the old rubber was all still there. That drew huge crowds and got shut down with big steel gates. Then the airport got reactivated and street racing moved to the road in front, parallel to the train tracks. There was one legal race on airport since then about 15 years ago. The RCMP put on a 1/8th mile event on the E-W runway at the eastern end. That got shortened to 500 feet after just a few runs because a fence across the runway separated the RCMP driver training area from the rest of the airport. The mayor heard about it afterwards and raised a stink and got all non- aviation activity banned from the airport.

    It's amazing how much they allowed the drag racers to prep the track and their tires. Not today. You do what's allowed and get your ass to the line! But back in the day the could do burn out after burn out, bring their own sticky juice or Rosen to put on the track and run any tire they wanted. And for the time, with the cubic inch limits they had to deal with, especially after the illegalized the Hemis, they ran some damn quick times. One kid I recently talked to couldn't believe they were well within the 8's running small blocks. These guy today are spoiled with turnkey mountain motoars they can buy off the shelf. Back then it was all about what the builder brought to the track! The way it should be, period!!!

    • @jimmieroan9881
      @jimmieroan9881 4 года назад +1

      these guys are not running the track or nhra they are running exhibition type matches, or better called match races between the drivers, the track would set it up, so what the drivers are doing is part of the show they put on for the track/fans, lots of big names in drag racing were part of it, one of the most famous or showy was jungle jim and his beautiful assistant jungle pam, check out the show they put on, pam could drive the crowd mad when she dropped down to check under the car for leaks.

    Great quality video for 1975. I'd like to see a Pro Stock racer drive back down the track to give the starter a piece of his mind today. I couldn't imagine that happening now. Do you know what year the last production body shell made the Pro Stock field?

    • @darrylfischer4244
      @darrylfischer4244  6 лет назад

      Yep it was probably the only time a racer drove back down the track!! Grumpy was pissed because the starter waited too long to start the tree countdown

    • @johnwilburn
      @johnwilburn 6 лет назад +2

      I don't get why, though. ??? It wasn't long at all by today's standards. Perhaps it seemed that way after numerous burnouts and prepping the track himself. All that might have made him anxious. I do hate how the announcers here (and today too) will run their yap right through a verbal argument.... we want to hear it!

  • @P_RO_

    Grumpy was a rule pusher. There was no prohibition of the Vega but even a mild 350 is too much for a stock unibody. Grumpy told them for 'safety purposes' he needed the tube frame and they could hardly deny it. It and Grumpy were such a hit the first year that they left the rules as they were. He also chose a 327 knowing he could make it rev faster than a 350, which would be necessary to get the HP and top-end speed he needed. There was a lot more science going on than is apparent and Grumpy was seeing the whole picture, not just focused on the engine like everyone else was.
