Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you play with such passion and sensitivity and you are really really talented and clever too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
The orchestra should have tuned before the soloist came out, (- especially that this concertmaster apparently had OCD for tuning,) that's the standard way for professional orchestras (I am a professional orchestra violinist). Making the soloist standing there waiting for the orchestra to tune excessively is ridiculous, since it should be the other way around - the orchestra waits for the soloist to tune. Shihan Wang played one of the most beautiful Mozart performances that I've ever heard, with musical maturity beyond his age. What a talent! Congratulations to Shihan!
Shihan I thought there was tremendous colour and expression throughout, belieing your 12 years! Awesome! Blessings to you. As another contributor saud in another thread: "passion and sensitivity" and I would add 'skill'. G Ire (adult student starting this piece)
During the second movement, it looked like the violist sitting 2nd desk is using a dollar bill as his mute 🤪. That reminds me of the time when Ray Chen also used a dollar bill as a mute when he performed a beautiful arrangement of Clair de lune for the violin in this RUclips video: ruclips.net/video/69ArQ3V65PI/видео.html Apart from that interesting observation, I absolutely loved and enjoyed Shihan’s performance of this Mozart concerto.
The main problem with this in other respects very beautiful performance is the lack of connection between the soloist and the orchestra. They both play beautifully but there is no engagement between them.
You absolutely don't know what are you talking about. 1st violin made absolutely heroic work, orchestra sounds plastic and bright and colorful and give full support. Give them true SOLO player feeling Mozart well , for example CLARA or CHLOE and miracle happens. This guy is very good but I'm afraid Mozart needs more feeling and understanding. Something you can't learn by practicing. You have it or you don't have it.
It is interesting to compare Shihan's performance of the Mozart Violin Concert No. 3 with that by Natsuho Murata (with whom Shihan competed in the 2018 Il Piccolo Violino Magico competition): ruclips.net/video/oqKv7o0d8qI/видео.html .
I searched for it too. It's by Sam Franko. Seemingly his cadenzas for this concerto are famous. It is in the G. Schirmer publication. I find it riveting. Do listen also to Susanne-Yoko Henkel's rendition (youtube).
Sublime ending to this concerto. Might it have been possible to end it just a little more gently ,as if WAM were saying " All that operatic stuff was a distraction from my message : Peace " ?
I don't like the sound of violins in general. But strangely I love the soloist's playing in this video. I wonder if it's because of the musician or the brand of the violin. What brand is it? It's definitely not because of the piece of music. I listened to other famous violinists playing this same Mozart's No. 3 but didn't like them.
