It's rather impressive how Bullock managed to be a terrible tenant but not quite terrible enough for Nivens to have a reasonable excuse to simply evict him.
Perhaps, a similar case of Dexter's Labs series, in the episode of "Trapped with a Vengeance", in that Yani, the janitor of the school, was frustrated by Dexter to be staying during the night-time in the school, forcing him to stay late working, and leading him to return home, when his wife was already sleeping. But, instead to simply sent a complain to the teachers and administrators to banned Dexter from stay night, Yani planned a crazy plan to kidnapped him. Much like Nivens, that instead to simply evicted Bullock, he get too far to planned threat with kill him, implying that maybe Nivens and Yani were simply insane people since the beginning.
It's a testament to Harvey Bullock's essential decency that he keeps buried deep down, that when Batman saves him from Nivens and it turns out he's proven wrong about who was threatening him, he's still thankful for Batman's help and not humiliated at having been wrong.
I mean let’s remember in the Christmas episode you mentioned, Bullock actually gave money to a criminal’s kid to get her dad a present (as long as it’s not a hacksaw). I do think this softened him a bit
The thing i like most about this iteration of Bullock is that he's pretty much a lot of what society shuns. He's overweight, he's a slob, he's rude and he's violent but most of all, he's got poor hygiene so he's actually quite smelly. Personally, exactly what i look for in a man. Someone who isn't hiding anything whatsoever and showing off their true selves in spite of what society thinks of them. Why that intrigues me so much is because despite the usual optics for someone like that (And despite the fact that he himself is occasionally being made to look that comedic, bumbling way) he's ACTUALLY very good at his job. In the Joker Fish episode, both he and Batman separately go off to figure out where the Joker is and both arrived at the same conclusion at the same time despite the fact they used different methods and did not collaborate with one another at all. Can't argue how dedicated he is at his job, even if he's sacrificing a more socially acceptable appearance and i admire him for that.
I like when he works with Batman. It shows that Bats is willing to look past appearances and past history and see a man who does share some of the same goals even if they pursue them very different ways. It also shows that Bullock is more competent than some might think, just weaker compared to the expert-trained hardcore vigilante.
Harvey Bullock was always one of the most underrated Batman characters as the man despite looking like a crooked cop never was one and subverted the expectations of the audience despite how much he doesn't agree with Batman or his methods. I greatly respect the character and how much he sticks by Gordan and stands by his intuition, even when he tends to break the rules a bit. The Batman Animated Series and the live-action FOX show Gotham had my favourite takes on the character of Harvey Bullock
I always loved when the Shark says that killing Batman will make him a hero, “but the real pleasure will be doing you, Bullock.” It shows that Bullock is just as much a crime-fighter as Batman and has a whole life and career of his own that we rarely see.
I think Bullock's comment about him being not all that different from Batman was an insult from Batman's perspective. However, I feel he was right. Bullock's behavior involving criminals is not all that different from Batman's. The only real differences are how far Bullock is willing to go and the fact that there are people he has to answer to.
I always loved how different the score was in this episode. The smooth jazz fits the atmosphere perfectly. Also, the guy trying to murder Bullock has a funny/tragic final scene. The way he just starts maniacally, but pitifully laughing is just perfect.
there has to be and if I had to guess it’s probably because he’s seen as a rather boring character by the folks in charge at dc Which explains why when he does appear he doesn’t really do much and another reason might be related to modern writers having less and less nostalgia for BTAS as time goes on Eventually bullock will be quietly retired without somebody being in the characters corner trying to convince dc he’s not irrelevant
A good point. They used Flass in Begins, didn't have one in TDK or Rises, and Bullock would have been perfect for The Batman, 2004 (maybe instead of Rojas) and 2022 (in addition to the commissioner). They didn't need him in The Brave and the Bold or Beware the Batman, and he's fully corrupt in Caped Crusader.
@@seanewing204 and yet, Bullock makes an appearance in the Scooby Doo and Batman: The Brave and the Bold crossover DTV movie. Which acts as the true finale to The Brave and The Bold.
@@SerumLake I feel like for the most part the idea of the cowboy 'loose cannon that gets results' cop is falling out of favor in the U-S, seeing as... well the list is pretty long. Maybe it would be easier if Bullock left the GCPD like Montoya did and struck out as a private eye, or something else cop-adjacent. A comic I love called Immortal Sergeant is all about one of those old-school Dirty Harry cops realizing how similar his mindset was to the kinds of criminals he treated like animals, and understanding not only how it made his community less safe, but destroyed his relationship with his son.
I’m not sure why, but I always liked Harvey Bullock when I was a kid. I always thought he was the hard case cop that simply wanted to protect Gotham and thought a vigilante caused more problems than solved.
I love a good noir story and a noir with Batman and Bullock is even better. Harvey has always a great character and this episode did a good job exploring his character and his complications relationship with Batman. I like how Harvey slowly starts to respect Batman as the series progresses, to the pint where he will even swallow his pride and ask Bruce for help. That shows grow for Harvey as a character.
I haven’t gotten to a Bullet for Bullock in my Batman read through yet, but recently got to Detective Comics 549 right near the transition from pre to post crisis. I would highly recommend it for Harvey Bullock fans, I quite like the detail of him being an enthusiast for classic movies and how his persona of a tough slob drops when he’s alone. It helped add some new dimensions to his character.
Love these individual episode analyses, it's great to hear you talk about what makes them shine. I'm looking forward to "Cape and Cowl," I always thought that one was memorable in an understate way.

This is personally one of my favorite episodes easily in my top 10. I’m kinda a sucker for episodes or the hero and villain forming an alliance. While Bullock isn’t a villain he still doesn’t fully trust Batman, but obviously needs his help. My only nitpick is while Nubians is a good twist, legally speaking he could’ve just evicted Bullock from his apartment. Since Bullock didn’t do a good job at keeping his place clean(not sure how it is in other parts of the world) but in the US if you don’t keep your place clean you can be evicted for it.
The BTAS episode, " A Bullet For Bullock", is one of the best episodes of the series. I do find it funny though that Bullock actually appeared in the movie, Scooby Doo & Batman: The Brave & The Bold! Re, he he he ( Scooby laugh)! Why not? Our favorite Great Daine has a history with The Dark Knight in two episodes of Scooby Doo Movies and an episode of Scooby Doo, Guess Who, where it was one of the last times Kevin Conroy voiced Batman. May he rest in peace. I want to remind you to do a review of the STAS episode, " The Late Mr. Kent" in the future.
I liked Bullock, and honestly I feel the did him Dirty in the Caped Crusader show. I honestly do believe he's trying to do the right thing like Batman he's got a strong sense of justice. However he doesn't seem to quite get the idea that cops aren't ment to punish crooks only capture them. Most likely he was raised on the Gray Ghost like Batman and admired the "taking the law into your own hands approach". He just had a more realistic view on careers and didn't have Bruce Waynes bank account
Yeah we need those tracks. Honestly this was a great episode and I wish we gotten more with Bullock. It's sad that despite that other characters who were created or changed for the series like Harley, Two Face and Mr Freeze became more prominent, Harvey Bullock still rarely appears. His other prominent appearances are in Gotham as one of the main characters and Batman Capped Crusader. I wish they had done more with him.
I always find it interesting how this is one of the first episodes of the new season titled 'The Adventures of Batman and Robin', which was meant to be a more lighthearted take on the series with greater focus on Robin. Yet he's nowhere here and it's grit, guns and crackhouses, while exploring the sad, lonely life of Bullock.
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel I love this video and channel Thanks you for your video and channel I love Batman the animated series
Yeah that’s true, thanks for the reminder. The snowy city wasn’t as prominent in those episodes as it was in Christmas with the Joker and A Bullet for Bullock, which is probably why they didn’t come to mind.
As I recall (caution: decades old memories) (I started reading Batman in the late 60s) when Harvey first appeared he was very slovenly, and imperfect, but not a bad officer. Alas, I think the animated series cleaned him up too much. (In animated series I think he was clean shaven, more muscular, and had less stains on clothing, and I don't remember the check coat with tie.) As always, thank you so very much for the video.
Serum did an old video about Bullock. He was one of the corrupt mayor's goons that was brought in to botch a corruption investigation Jim Gordon was doing. But after going too far and giving Gordon a stroke, Gordon changes his ways (but not his habit) and becomes one's of Jim's closest allies.
Funny enough, I remember watching a video talking about the trope, The Dreaded, and they explained that Batman classifies because of how sparingly he's used
I think the falling out with Summer, combined with Nivens' attempt on his life, is what might've gotten Bullock to soften up a bit. He's ruined relationships with people he knows, and might've even trusted, over nothing but his own boorishness. Let me say that just being an insufferable oaf is no justification for killing the man, but this really is one of those episodes where no one 'wins' in the end. Save for Batman, everyone lost something.
A favorite episode, not because of the end, which is great, but because of the relationship, where Bullock has a history of hatin', "That filthy bat scum." We really get a nice look at Bullock's life with this one.
I would've loved old fart Bullock talking to Terry's Batman, perhaps helping him out with a case, about the old Batman and hw he deduced at some point that OG Batman's identity was Bruce Wayne and then before Terry leaves, he calls him "Mcginnis". Would be a great way of showing that Bullock really was an effective detective and might be the world's 2nd greatest detective behind Bruce Wayne.
If I have a dollar for every time someone wanted DCAU Harvey Bullock dead... I won't be rich, but at least I'll still get good enough money. 1:45: Alliteration hoh. 1:56: And Bullock enjoys hunting down the Bat in case the latter goes rogue (falsely, of course, but still). 2:37 and Mask of the Phantasm sure showcased that. 3:39: Of course, The New Batman Adventures did end up remaking a few tie-in comics, so... Gotta admire snowy backdrops in animation. A neat example would be how it's used on Ojamajo Doremi Dokkān Ep. 49 (a Hazuki Fujiwara spotlight denouement, if anyone's a fellow fan reading this), to the point that one may be mistaken on thinking the ep was for Kyoto Animation's Kanon if not CLANNAD, because of the melancholic and mature feel of it. (Helps that said ep was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, director for films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children.) 5:37: Especially so considering B:TAS was a Fox Kids show. Doubt the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons ever talked about narcotics. 6:04: Arguably, though, pulling Candice's hair is more cathartic, since it should be her, to quote Little Women, "one beauty". Oh, and the foot shove is sublime. 7:49: Another reason why the show's more special than expected. In any modern fiction for my perspective, ANYONE can be the culprit. Even a janitor, even a ten year old girl, even a hotdog vendor, and so on. Of course Bullock's landlord ain't an exception. And man, Nivens would have preferred Sherlock Holmes as a tenant than Harvey Bullock. Anyone who's ever read the former's books and seen his landlady Mrs. Hudson's patience and understanding will probably sympathize. 8:46: So close and yet so far, poor Nivens. Anarky's still a tryhard. Still think Wormwood could have been easily replaced by the Riddler.
It really is weird how inconsistent S&P are. No modern guns, because kids might try to imitate it, but if the guns are from the 1920s, that's okay, because kids apparently can't generalize old guns with new guns? Or just the tremendous amount of violence they were allowed to inflict on the robots, or Scarface because they weren't human, even though the acts of violence are still just as easily imitated regardless of who you show them towards. It would be fascinating to actually clinically study the factors at play in the S&P offices that lead people to have such weirdly inconsistent approaches like this.
You bring up a good point with Batman, Often in something like the Justice League hes out of place. Batman is neat but I really tend to like him being used sparingly and not being an Ironman like character tho without combining Marvel and DC I see why they do that. Btw In such a thing (I definitely don't make up my stories about it) Batman just makes more sense being someone you go to for intel and he likes to be on his own. Back on subject this episode is great one of my favorites to rewatch.
I enjoy some of the episodes people don't like so much largely because they paint a picture of Gotham, but I don't know how people can't really love this episode. Kinda makes you wonder if there's any hope for BCC's Bullock in the end? Nah, probably not either.
Haha Vinny The Shark is based on Lee Marvin and IKYK who Nivens is based on 😅😅😅

I feel it might have done some to help Bullock, as I did notice in episodes following the references of him being a creep definitely died down. In the christmas anthology episode of The New Batman Adventures, he even gave money to a kid who's dad was a particularly notorious criminal so she could give her father a present.
@SerumLake yeah it would be a bummer if he doesn't show up , the only reason I think he will is because James Gunn put in small daily planet characters like Cat Grant and Steve Lombard in Superman so he definitely cares about less significant characters so I can see James Gunn suggesting to Andy Muschietti hey add Harvey Bullock in the movie he's part of the GCPD
I always liked Bullock in Batman TAS, gruff, blunt, a slob and roiugher than he needed to be, but supposedly on the good side. Too bad I don't remember seing him in following animated series, aside from the sequel series.
Definitely bullocks finest episode. I think theres a lot of reason his type of character may be falling out of character. I feel like bcc's was less nuanced, sadly.
I imagine a variant of (Harvey Bullock) who goes from, cubby, stubborn, sloppy, hot tempered, & judgmental guy. To then later HARVEY, decides to change himself; He gets himself in healthy shape, stops being sloppy, takes classes in controlling his temper, and slowly becomes less judgmental of people. Plus to add in time he develops genuine respect for Batman, and Batman’s heroic team. I imagine at age:42, HARVEY BULLOCK eventually finds love, with a woman who genuinely loves him as well, and I imagine later they get married. I also imagine later HARVEY BULLOCK, & his wife they have two kids, and I imagine one of his kids becomes a huge fan of Batman & Robin. While Harvey’s second kid, who’s a boy, he becomes a huge fan of BatGirl, aka Oracle, and a fan of NightWing as well.
This is why I hate that they made Bullock just a generic full villain in most recent show. Bullock is what the old GCPD. With Batman entering the scene he showed Bullock that he did not need to be as dirty anymore. That there is hope for a better way. Deep down Bullock is a good guy just very rough. The most recent Bullock was just waisted and made to be a one dementional bad guy with no depth other than he is a coward.
Alfred is the MVP of this story for referring to Bullock as "The detective who looks like an unmade bed."
It's rather impressive how Bullock managed to be a terrible tenant but not quite terrible enough for Nivens to have a reasonable excuse to simply evict him.

You clearly have never rented out an apartment. Courts heavily favor tenants in disputes simply due to the tyranny of the majority.

He just had a more realistic view on careers and didn't have Bruce Waynes bank account
taking a look at his on the job outfit i feel you might be onto something with the GG connection
Thanks for giving this great episode attention.
Great stuff as always. Thanks
You’re welcome!
It’s strange how little Bullock has appeared on screen, isn’t it.
A classic that needs to be watched
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
I love Batman the animated series
There are other episodes that feature snow that don't really focus on Christmas, such as Cat Scratch Fever and Terror in the Sky.
(In animated series I think he was clean shaven, more muscular, and had less stains on clothing, and I don't remember the check coat with tie.)
As always, thank you so very much for the video.
One of my favorite episodes when it first came out.
I appreciate the shout to Darwyn Cooke's Parker adaptationsDweny Cook's
This was a well done episode
Funny enough, I remember watching a video talking about the trope, The Dreaded, and they explained that Batman classifies because of how sparingly he's used
A bullet for Bullock was such a well made episode
I liked BTAS Bullock. Much more interesting than the one we got in the new series, that’s just a corrupt cop.
I think it is episodes like this that make it hard for some folks to deal with the Caped Crusader Buloock.
5:28 Really, tho………. We need them tracks, man.
You’re telling me!
Next BTAS essay should be about the episode Joker’s Wild.
I used to think Vinny The Shark was based on Humphrey Bogart. Guess I was wrong.
Very nicely written/discussed
An all time favorite one of mine.
This is knit picky, but Terror in the Sky, and Cat Scratch Fever both had snow
A lesson to take away from this episode is don't piss off your landlord.
4:52 I feel like they used snow instead of rain because it's easier to animate.
I wish Bullock appeared in Beyond. I was curious to know what happened to him.
Due to Bullock's eating and drinking habits, I doubt he lived that long.
He probably would have called Terry Bat-Spawn or something-in disbelief that another Batman would surface
@@brianpughsley8680 Great, now I want to see that.
@@stinkyroadhog1347 We were robbed.
Such a great episode!!
(Helps that said ep was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, director for films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children.)
5:37: Especially so considering B:TAS was a Fox Kids show.
Fun fact: Nivens was a parody of DH Pierce’s character Niles Crane from Frasier.
At this point, Bullock needs to clean up his act.
Gotham had the best Harvey Bullock. Also an incredible character arc. You should do a deep dive into the Gotham versions of these characters
It was a privilege to have intersected with this show as a child, it showed how proper drama was done, and is still a high point in television.
I enjoy some of the episodes people don't like so much largely because they paint a picture of Gotham, but I don't know how people can't really love this episode. Kinda makes you wonder if there's any hope for BCC's Bullock in the end? Nah, probably not either.
Bullock reminds me of a younger Orson Welles' Captain Quinlan in "Touch of Evil."
100%
Thanks for this flashback!
7:09 I mean episode has "Bullock" in it
I'd rather Bullock be not corrupt. Just kind of blunt and crass. Thats just me though.
I really want to see them try and redeem Bullock in Caped Crusader. He's so corrupted, it'd be interesting to see if they can give him some humanity.
Do you we'll see Harvey Bullock show up in the DCU in Batman Brave and The Bold ?
For some reason I don’t think we will
@SerumLake yeah it would be a bummer if he doesn't show up , the only reason I think he will is because James Gunn put in small daily planet characters like Cat Grant and Steve Lombard in Superman so he definitely cares about less significant characters so I can see James Gunn suggesting to Andy Muschietti hey add Harvey Bullock in the movie he's part of the GCPD
Nicely done.
I always liked Bullock in Batman TAS, gruff, blunt, a slob and roiugher than he needed to be, but supposedly on the good side. Too bad I don't remember seing him in following animated series, aside from the sequel series.
I wonder who will tell the Joker that Nivens needed more than one bad day.
5:36 LMAO!!!
I wish kids shows still respected the kid's intelligence like BTAS did.
Definitely bullocks finest episode. I think theres a lot of reason his type of character may be falling out of character. I feel like bcc's was less nuanced, sadly.
TEWLAWLYURFRENSABOUTMEH!!
Were there any other episodes where they included homages to other pulp detective adaptations?
i can't think of a good comment so RUclips overlords accept this meeker prayer that this video will become popular
Ah yes bootleging sherbet among the most heinous of crimes
Harve Bullock and Sam Burke must team up!
Nah I like that version it's just another take
I’ll always prefer BTAS Bullock, but I liked how Caped Crusader’s Bullock accepted his role as a violent flunky.
It was me. I did it.
