  • The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver is such an iconic part of Doctor Who, but over the years it has become more and more of a problem. In this video I ramble on about how the various problems the Sonic has, and how I hope the shows attitude towards the device changes as we enter the new era of Who.

so far with the first two episodes its been less overpowered
the noise canceling bit was a bit strong, but it makes sense, the sonic putting out soundwaves to cancel other soundwaves out

For a long time I was hoping for just one comment from the Doctor along the lines of: "Nah, I just wave it around and pretend to read some imaginary screen because people keep second guessing me when I say I just know the answer!" No hope for that now that they've added a screen ... in post production.
Also, WTF does RTD think a gun looks like? Not the first stupid idea from him and likely not the last.

I agree. Now it looks like a remote from the Click movie and even more moves away from a screwdriver concept by making it a "remote for everything"

I think that the sonic should disable weapons that are not fully solid unlike a glock. Unlock and lock doors & hack computers. & I think the idea of a defensive force field could work but Amp it up or carry a second screwdriver and pull a pen and screwdriver & maybe have the pen burn out after one try so the doctor has to replace the pen

The Doctor did not have the sonic in Space Babies, because it was doing a task in Jocelyn's container. And yes, i like the new design. An electric screwdriver doesn't look like a traditional screwdriver either. It is designed to be comfortable to hold and aim its sonic means.

The thing is, Sonic Screwdrivers have been established as a specific type and design of Sonic probe. Every departure from the standard cylindrical shape has been given a different name, such as Twelve's Sonic Sunglasses, Eleven's Sonic Cane, River's Sonic Trowel, and Missy's Sonic Umbrella.
What Fifteen has does not, in _any_ way, resemble a Sonic Screwdriver, so why does it share the name? _That's_ the biggest issue I think people have with it: it's not what it's called.

Honestly although I agree on the sonic being used too often as a plot resolving tool, I kinda feel like it would make sense for the Doctor to try and improve his favorite tool over time, adding new capabilities and features.
Trying to make it evolve so you can use it more and save more lives sounds pretty on point !
Also, even tho the "it's not a gun" part does resonate (hah), it's not been mentioned that it looks now more like a universal remote... What it actually feels more like it is now !
I don't really like the new design, but it does make sense 🤔

I agree with everything you said. I hate the overuse of the sonic screwdriver and all of those insane capabilities they gave it in the 11th Doctor's era. In fact, the eleven's era is one of my least favorites, in part, because of the sonic thing. I've always had a problem with how often the Doctor depends on the sonic and it's cool that the classic wasn't like that. The 4th Doctor used the sonic in a very pontual way, it's not this madness that the NuWho is doing. Hopefully that will change, it would've been way cooler to see more of the Doctor's inteligence come into play instead of his magic Harry Potter wand.

Completely agree. It's become everything from a cantrip to a weapon. We owe at least one thing to the terrileptils.

I don't like the idea of the sonic being this tool he's constantly using. For me ideally it shouldn't be much more prominent than his psychic paper

Disney Who will do what Disney always does. Suck everything that made me fall in love with Dr Who in the first place. It’s heartbreaking that they snatched up Dr who

With the new season, how do you feel about the moment where the dr uses the sonic for something more along the lines of messing with sound waves? (ep3)

I'm enjoying the use of it in the last 3 episodes! Thank goodness he couldn't just deactivate the landmine with the sonic in 'Boom' haha
I actually really like that, it ties into the sonics inherent ability to influence sound waves, a similar effect was used in The Magicians apprentice I believe, where the doctor made an acoustic corridor with the sonic and I had no problem with that either

@@RamblingManYT I _always_ love it when the Sonic is used in semi-plausible ways; examples include unlocking the acoustic tumblers and deflecting soundwaves in The Rings of Akhaten, lighting torches and candles (using vibrations to create heat), the Sunglasses creating a wireframe of the environment using echolocation, and the classic turning screws and interacting with locks.

Always love your doctor who content. I am anticipating the screwdriver suddenly being able to literally do anything but "work on wood." I did not like the force field, I feel like we're mere steps away from a sonic lightsaber 😅
