The *best*, deepest and most interesting friendship in all of the Jossverse and my two favorite characters of them all. While Bangel, Dangel(us) and Fresley are my favorite romantic pairings, Angel and Wesley still have one of the most profound connections of all. I love how Angel and Wesley's struggles often parallel and Wesley is almost always the one who shows the deepest understanding of what Angel's going through that most of the others don't really see or understand. And they are the two characters most likely to make the hard decisions nobody else wants to make that are head over heart (Wesley first does it when he argues for Willow to die to stop the Mayor). And it's always a given that Wesley is Angel's second in command and the boss when he's not around. Angel relies on Wesley in the fight against evil more than anyone, knowing that, outside of himself, he has the most to offer outside of pep talks. He's the one who looks back at Angel when the rest of the team are hugging in the sunshine with Groo. He was always the most aware of his fellow friend who always felt left out of that love on so many occasions... Because Wesley himself felt left out of love for so much of his life. Wesley's the one who remarks on what Angel's curse loophole really is, while others are always quick to assume it is just sex (it's not). And there's even quite a bit of depth going all the way back to Wesley's time as Watcher where, even knowing fully well the details of Angel's past as Angelus (more than anybody) and even when he's trying to extract Faith, he pointedly doesn't hurt him and is standing right next to him during the Mayor's Ascension. They already had a number of solid interactions leading up to AtS. He respected Angel back when he really had no reason yet to. Wesley's introduction to Angel was literally watching a display of his intimacy with one of his new Slayer charges and learning about the vampire detail (in full game face) not long after. Not all of the Council saw Angel having a soul as a good enough reason. And he very quickly became one of Angel's staunchest defenders, willing to harm those (even humans and his ex-employers) who tried to harm his friend, boss and the person to give him a second chance who made him feel needed with a purpose. Wesley, like Angel, has very low self-esteem, and due to him being very quick to blame himself as a failure for Faith, he saw that Angel had been the only one who was getting anywhere with her. He's always quick to blame his own failings and we see why through all we hear about his relationship with his father, something he and Angel/Liam share. They never feel like they are good enough (and this trait is one both carry through their whole stories). And despite Angel's anger over Wesley over the Connor situation, it is Wesley who goes above and beyond to save him from the ocean and to stop Angelus' rampage (it was really Wesley's dangerous plan and trickery that did it, regardless of Faith putting it in motion). Angel is also the only one to really talk to him about his mental state following Fred's death concerning his relationship with Illyria going in an unhealthy direction. It's also to Angel, after being manhandled for stabbing Gunn, where Wesley expresses his most vivid grief. Angel shows the most understanding of what Wesley's going through in the final episodes. You kind of get the impression that their non-verbal last look is a knowing goodbye.
Exactly.Angel and Wesley share a very profound friendship,even if they are mad at each other or are apart,if the other is in danger saving him it's not even up for debate.Angel could have easily kill Wesley in the hospital and Wesley could have let Angel die in the ocean but they didn't.And it's sad really,because Buffy got to keep the Scoobies but Angel was left without his family.
It makes me so happy to see this show vidded! It's my favorite show of all time and this friendship emotionally destroys me every time I think about it. I love both of these characters so much. I'll never forget them.

OMG I am sorry I am late (as always) to comment on this!! It makes me so happy when you vid these two, because it's such an underrated friendship in Jossverse, and you're one of the few people like me who think it's the best one! It's just so nuanced and these two survive so much together, and all the pain just ends up making them understand each other even more than they did before! I love that this video was so largely focused on the way they were both so lonely, but by coming together, it makes them that much stronger. The way they inspire each other is beautiful. Gah. I don't really know what to say with this video, because it just makes me so happy! Obviously, you matched every lyric perfectly!! "I get caught in the lies of the enemy" OMG that was sheer perfection. I feel like this song was written for them! "find me in the dark now" that moment when Wes is the only one who sees Angel's insecurity and feelings of being an outsider. /cries/ "from the prison of my own pride" As much as I loathe the BA scene and the fact that he feels he needs to run and apologize when he was actually right to tell her off (lol this coming from the biggest Buffy stan ever) and the subsequent pissing match that he instigates with Riley, I really love that he has Wes there for support in that moment! That episode was so huge for their friendship. "every little thing that I've known is everything that I need to let go" that totally sums it up. Wes was taught his entire life. even brainwashed if you will, that vampires are evil NO EXCEPTIONS. And not only that, but that the council is the LAW. No questions asked. It took getting to know Angel to make Wesley see that everything he had been force-fed was a total lie. That is one of the most impactful aspects of this relationship! It's also why I don't even really get angry with Wesley in s3 of Buffy when he sides with the council in terms of Faith. At that point, he couldn't have known that this wasn't the right way. And the scoobies certainly didn't lead him to see the light. They just mocked him and kept him in the dark. But Angel was different. He treated Wesley as a partner from day one. "I've done more good while working with Angel than I ever did under the council's employ" /sobs/ "come and find me in the dark now" when he cuts his arm to let Angel drink from it....the fact that he spent months searching for Angel after everything that happened. /ugly tears/ I love these two so much. Man, you really screw me up when you vid them!! haha!! THE LAST LOOK THEY SHARE IS EVERYTHING. IT GIVES ME LIFE. THERE IS MUCH IN THAT ONE NOD.
