Homestead Shop Talk is a weekly audio podcast hosted by Jason Contreras (@sowtheland), Ben Hollar (@thehollarhomestead) and Al Lumnah (@lumnahacres). Three dudes with different homesteads talking about homestead life, content creation, growing a homestead and building a life worth living for. Thanks for listening!
Been missing you, Ben, however I totally understand. Hope to see your vlogs again soon.
Good to see everyone!
My husband thinks taking me to Menards is him treating me to date night. 😂
Staycation, Ben. New life always needs special time. Be it precious children or new animals or even new plants. The one thing that can't be bought. Time. My husband just stopped to give me a hug and asked, are these your boys? Made me chuckle when I answered, yep. Love what you three are up to. There is purpose in every season.
So agree Ben, social media has its place but It can be overbearing, if that is the right word! Glad you’ve found your direction away from it! 👏👏
Enjoyed your podcast today! Great to see all of your smiles! Hope you have a great summer! Happy Days! 🧊☀️👏😄🤗🥰🙏
54 FRIDAY SHOPTALK.
Thank you.

happy chickens! beepity beep beep tomato horn worms!
I'm so old eight tracks were high tech when I was in highschool!
High tech for me was 45 rpm's. The little records with the big hole. You had to have an adapter in the hole to fit on the spindle of your record player.
Grew up with 78rpm records, before the 45’s and 8 tracks in the 40’s and 50’s. How time flies🤷🏾♀️😊
Good Morning Fellas, Another beautiful day and ready for Shop Talk!!!!
Morning! heck yeah!!!
Happy 4th guys! Ben..we miss you & Meg❤..blessings
Al, I love the idea of fireworks at three a.m. Like payback for my neighbors not letting me sleep! I'm now so sad that I didn't go and buy fireworks!
They still have fireworks, usually 50% off. Probably
Still Higher$$
than last year.
See ya 3 a.m. with smiles.
Michigan 🙏
Love you three
Hello 👋 guys, last week Ben mentioned Uncle Jack’s Dead Bug and I got some for the squash bugs, it’s also used for any caterpillars that affect your garden
Al, great idea. Y'all should do a podcast at a homestead event. be blessed y'all. Jesus Rules!
"Dog days" is a reference used throughout the southern states.
I think it’s the calm before the storm then there’s some hurricanes out there. We might get some remnants of the rain.☔️ (Houston)
I’m hoping for rain it’s bad
This is my preferred screen format Al,Ben and Jason 👍
Happy Fourth of July and welcome back to the podcast! 😊
Yay, thank you!
I enjoy your podcast and each of y’all’s channels. ❤ I find this podcast quite amusing!😂😂
Glad you enjoy it!
Ben's teenagers are great at building fence! Very impressed with them!
Good talk.
Talking about the dog days of summer… Here in Ky you can walk around between 9:00-10:00am and sweat just pours not from being overly heated, but from the humidity. 😅
yep-that's still south-i feel ya-lol
Jason and Al you seem like. REALLY hard workers.
Nice job.
Agreed, and Ben likes talk and to drift along.
I love maniacal laughter !!! I happened to watch all three men's RUclips channels so this podcast (all 54) is interesting to me.
🙋🏼 From FL
Guys is so joyful to listen to all you three.
Al. Be careful feeding fine grass clippings to pigs. You can get compacted bowels and blockages. Tall grass and weeds are ok.
Extra zucchini and garden waste and leaves are great too.
So important to take time off! So glad you did!!!!
I cannot wait for some tomato pie! It’s the thing I love looking forward to in about December.
I was born in 1959, and I had never heard of tomato pie in all my life until I took a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2021. A restaurant there served it. It had 3 or 4 different cheeses in it
It was soooo good.
Talk about dating... When my kids were young, I brought out some of my old albums, to play, And my oldest says "Wow dad, those are huge CD's!
Interesting conversation. Jason, Heartway told me they had a lovely time and enjoyed the visit. Glad you were able to stop. . Al, I have been looking for one of those spreaders for a while now - good find!! I chuckled at the frozen ground talk as I am frozen ground for months as well - our water lines need to be 8 foot deep. I really laughed at the computer talk - I remember the 3 1/2 discs...and in reality I remember the first computers . I still have cassettes - miss them in my truck! LOL. Man, I am aging myself bad!! LOL I moved all my vinyl to cassettes too Ben and now can't listen to it except in the house...I don't want any of it digital so don't use my phone for this purpose - back up your music!! I still have boxes of vinyl and CD's...lol.
The biggest legal scam in history. Records, 8-track, cassettes, CD's, DVD's, iPods, iTunes, & Spotify. Each time a new format is released, you HAVE to buy ALL your music all over. Stealing in any other form is against the law.
Wow!
😂
Ya, I noticed this in my 60+ yrs. I don't participate anymore
@@simoneconsciousobserver3105 Me neither something about the whole thing no longer seems right
I LOVE Menard's! There isn't one in my area, but I still get their daily sale emails and can order and have it delivered. I learned about Menard's from this podcast! ~ Jason, I watch all three of your YT channels regularly, but I really loved the video you took at the festival at McMurray Hatchery where you interviewed so many people. It's good to see so many people wanting to learn about homesteading and the old ways of doing things. Back to our roots!!
I haven’t watched it all yet but it’s my bed time but Ben you guys are just taking a vacation
Seems more like a retirement.
@@AfterTheRains ha ha ha ha ha
I bought myself a toy that plays 8 tracks, cassettes, records and CD. Love it.
Hello from Comstock, WI. Our local ACE Hardware has most of our home improvement needs, for the rest we head to Menards. Theres Lowe’s and Home Depot in the larger cities, like Eau Claire and The Twin Cities, but it takes fuel to get there too so we usually bite the bullet and support the locals. :)
I always enjoy catching your episodes here on RUclips. Have a great weekend!
Al, string twinkling or racing LED lights as the top line around your pasture.
Good morning from OBX vacation, two more days to go 😎👍
Mr. Hollar thats the reason I only watch youtube. And messing with friends. Thank you all for all the channels. G'D BLESS and greetings with love from Inge Noordam (the Netherlands/Europe)
Social media eats your brain! I only watch my special RUclipsrs 😊
Shoutout massachusetts...ya boy, born and bred .
Yaaaa shop talk.
Al you need to go help Ben on the house that would make a good video
Ha ha ha ha ha ha
That would be great 👍 😊
The Shorthorn as a dual purpose breed was also used as a draft animal in early American life
Tomato pie is fantastic
This is how old I am: I put together 'date night' compilations of romantic music on a reel-to-reel recorder. That was the best thing there was at that time. It was actually pretty good, so long as you were careful with the tape.
Mercy, was otr semi-truck driver until retired at 73. Goal was to average 3500 - 4000 miles per week. Did pay $100 for a soft cushion. By the way, female, 78 lbs, 5'3". When had to sell truck due to reaction to reaction to a new inhaler. Only took 1 thyroid pill per day because of thyroid cancer in 2002.
If we finally catch that darn woodchuck that’s eating my garden, I’ll laugh maniacally too. 😏
Thanks guys!🎆
I love my Menards. The green buckets are the best. Yes you can find just about everything there.
Havve a great week❤️🙏
My 2015 Chevy equinox has a CD player so I still listen to all my music in my CD player..
Great chat tonight. Enjoyed listening to you. ❤❤🌻🌻
I love all Homestead Shop Talk Podcast videos!
Tomato pie is the Best!!! Love the podcast guys
Great podcast ❤
Thanks for listening
Love heart-way farms lovely family
Hey! Been listening to you your entire year. Referred by Al. Started watching his channel when Olivia would count their daily eggs😊. Orig from CA, husband native OR. I’m 61, he’s 62 and we have a 10 acre vineyard (husband makes the wine), winery, AirBnB Cottage, 2 Harvest Host spots, chickens, goats, Kunes & Am Chins. Terrible at gardening but try. Did I mention “this” life is our retirement? Sold our company to our son 3 yrs ago. We are busier now than ever! I think we did it backwards 😂. Enjoy your channels and this podcast. Always learn something. Thanks to all of you.
Al. With your manure spreader. You should try to find a commercial turkey producer. Buy the manure from them, the nitrogen levels are incredible for pastures just a idea. It's what I do
Hey Al, 1200 + miles from Iowa to Idaho.
Ha! That was funny. Ben talking about the prices of fireworks anymore... I said out loud " Ben you will come up with something more fun for the boys to blow up than buying fireworks" then you started talking about what the boys would have more fun with or just as much fun with. Lol😅 ❤
I love to watch each of your individual videos, but when the three of you are together you re hilarious. I wish I lived closer and could go to your classes. Just can’t handle the long drive. Love your families.
Gary
There is a very distinctive “PING” sound when the moose breaks through the fence on my sister’s acreage, followed by sailor inspired cussing by the humans.
BTW, JASON COULD MAKE YOU AN ARMORED DOOR BEN. JUST SAYIN'😊
Ben, i can confirm about the tannarite.... 🎉🎉😂 #lifewithboys
I still use my iPod nano daily (my third one) for listening to audiobooks. I dread the day it dies.
Tks for podcast, love hearing ya talk about your week. Al you had lots going on this week and shared with us...many thanks. Jason your trip was awesome tks for sharing on the road and talks with others at Fest. NOW Ben... tks for the baby Liz pic shot at least we know ya are alright and resting. Much love to all ya and family. Until next time stay cool from heat.
You all are funny with the CD’s, when I was in college, we used punch cards and took them to the computer lab for a two step process, punching and processing. So I go all the way back! 😂😂😂
Good morning.
Morning
Love your farm talk❤️❤️❤️
i just watched the video 34 seconds only and all i see is Jason's hands lol hugsssss
Jason, we live in Minnesota and if we had a farm sitter, we would have driven to Iowa to listen to your talk and shake your hand. Maybe next year! You guys should do that one together that would be awesome.
Again great pod cast.
Imagine if you could get all three of you to a conference and do the podcast live and simulcast:)
I’ve got around 300 or more vinyl singles up in my loft that I haven’t played in the last thirty five years, and a mini turntable I’ve never used. I need to do that! 😎
Bring on the Epic 🌧️💦
" I hope it doesnt mean we're not getting rain the rest of the summer"
Is a double negative a positve?
🌨️Faith is the evidence of things hoped for.🌨️
Al shout out from Texas on your hat!
We came home one night and discovered we didn’t have a house key. Lucky we still had a crappy cheap door, it was easy to kick in.
Al. Maybe if you could find some kind of sensor to hook inline of the fence that would send a notification to your phone if it has an interuption
Put some “pizza meat” in your tomato pie! We’ve used pepperoni before and it was so good. Next time I’m trying Italian sausage.
Thank you for having me.
Hi my three good looking guys I am not flirting I am old but love watching you guys 😅❤
Good morning!
morning!
We watch 😂
so Ben, do the edition like that lol be ya'lls safe room !
As a long-time Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE since 2000), I share your emotions about some of the changes in not only Apple hardware, but also some of the seemingly freakish "updates" that come down the pike. It seems like things were a bit more organized while Steve Jobs was living, but some of the wheels have fallen off since he passed.
My first Apple (pre-Mac) had a 4-digit serial number, and there were all sorts of ways we could re-engineer those dandy Apple ][ machines so they would work better for us experimenters. (Remember when the Apple did not have lower case letters? Then, when upgrades came out and we could have TRUE descenders. Ahhh, those were the days! I'll bet nobody reading this comment remembers having to type 3D0G on an Apple....or, when disc drives came out, we could type "PR#4" (if the interface card was in slot #4) in order to get the floppy disc to boot.)
Thanks, guys, for another fun, informative episode.
I had to laugh over the tomato worms. When my kids were little I was already growing tomatoes in California. I would take the kids to pick tomato worms. One night for dinner I decided to make creamed spinach for dinner and when I put it on their plates...in unison the yelled (Ewwww tomato worm guts!" They would not touch it :) Ben, been missing you....are are playing hookey!!
Good job guys
I save a dvd and cd players in a box
Hi guys😊
Don't know if they ,the moose, don't see it or don't care. And the Moose aint talking😅😅
Mom had dad frame all the screen doors with chicken wire for safety. Cactus plants outside my bedroom window, dad piled all his old wooden ladders outside my other window.
Nope not an ounce of paranoia in me. Lol
Miss you guys Ben, but understand the need to take time for baby bonding.
Al get some Timeless pvc posts.
😂 keep us posted 😝
Here in the Northwest Corner of Washington State we have Roosevelt elk and they walk right through fences, wooden rails, log fence- a friend had them walk through the orchard and 5 year old fruit trees were broken off at their belly level- the tree trunks were 5+ inch diameter. Elk just walk through anything, folks chase them off with ATVs but they don't care about solid barrier fence let alone electric line.
Great talk . . . agree with you Jason, just got a new Corolla Cross . . . still haven't figured out all the tech. It's hybrid, half the consumption of the old. I can plug in my jump drive and it lists the music on the screen. Cheers.
I just got a Corolla, hatchback which is the most common in U.K., and I am very disappointed I need an additional product in order to play music. All the fancy technology and no music player.
I want one.
We just finished leveling the front house now I got the guys doing the garage apartment which is a little harder. This house is 1925. The garage apartment is probably 1930 and there was modifications. Made later on so it’s gonna be a little bit harder. These guys have to tear up concrete dig in to pick up the apartment and do I guess the four corners support and then work from the inside out I’ve been pulling all the stuff out of the garage so they can work which is good for me because some of it is not going back in. .. We have been decluttering items ..really to make or storage sheds LESS..but been it’s so hot ..we been taking our time .,I personally can only do 1 1/2 hours of work..
I have took about 10 boxes to either the church or the Goodwill took two loads to the dump. I still got plenty plenty more. It’s been too long 30 years of storing things it’s time to go. I have sold a lot in the garage sale but garage sales are too hot right now. This weather I can’t do it, but I am high so I will give an hour and a half every day to move things around and I see a big difference one of my shades I can actually dance inside. There’s so much room in there right now, we’re still working on things
fried green tomatoes is something you can only get in the summer too
Rain would be nice.
😢
Ben, gotta try potato tomato pie!
