This is amazing! Like you, I am a Toth Freak. LOL. The drawing is amazing but i do feel it actually resembles the sketch style of Kent Williams. I just recently discovered his amazing short stint on DC's Black Canary. I have never seen a DC comics done with such bravado and minimalism with excellent storytelling. Hopefully u can do a video on something like that one day.
I'm familiar with Williams, from way back - probably still have some of his books. Not sure I've heard of his Black Canary stuff - where/when did it appear? Has it been collected? I seem to recall Chiarello mentioning KH in ep 7 of this program, having gone to art school with him. Amazing drawing/painting. Not sure given the focus of this show I'd go into specific works of creators other than Toth, but I'll keep in mind KH as a guest for In Discussion someday...
@@comixcrush Sorry for not being clear. I was speaking of Alex Toth's stint on DC's Black Canary. (have you seen this?) I think you misunderstood me. I am not looking to do any interviews or discussions necessarily about KH as this is an Alex Toth platform. It is amazing how your sketches resemble a mix of Toth, KH and british comics artist, Duncan Fegredo. I have always wanted someone to delve deeper into the relationship and direct influence of Noel Sickles on Toth. Sickles seems like a mystery to me within the comics field but i have noticed that Toth did seem quite fixated on Sickles especially. I think there is more to that story.
@@wrestledeep Whoops - sorry! Yeah, I misunderstood. I touched on Toth's Black Canary story in ep 2, and it's brought up again briefly in the forthcoming ep 12 with a guest, whom I think you'll enjoy. The Cartoonist Kayfabe duo dedicated an episode to the BC tale, but, I agree, a further look and analysis is warranted. I'll take it up here, in the future, but we'll see what format that takes. A Sickles/Toth episode has long been on my episode list, so you can bet I'll get to it - I just have a bunch others to do first. I appreciate you seeing anything of Williams and/or Fegrado in my drawing. They're both top notch, and I marvel at the fact the Fegredo drew Millenium Fever ('95) without penciling - at least that's what I've heard...
Thanks, Heiki, glad you like the drawing. Here I'm using the Tombow Fudenosuke for line, and then go back in with the Pentel Pocket Brush. Toth used a Flair marker for lettering at times (and drawing) and also the Pentel Rolling Writer, but waxed poetic in some of his writings about a variety of markers - I'd have to dig it up...
Ludwig Hohlwein. Uh oh, ebil natzi. You should be ashamed for even thinking about thinking about his name. But in seriousness, probably one of the top 5 illustrators and all around graphic designers of all time. His sense of design, texture, lighting is unmatched. His work looks just as fresh today as it did during his lifetime.

Nice drawing, what's the marker you're using? I've read Toth used some markers for linework, you happen to know which?

Yep, great stuff. His name also came up in a live Zoom conversation last week with the Academy of Art University hosted by Christopher Carman.
Holbein was a magician. A genius of design.
