South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes Heads to Delhi for Oath Taking Ceremony

Delhi, June 22, 2024 - Captain Viriato Fernandes, the newly elected Member of Parliament from South Goa, has left for Delhi ahead of his oath-taking ceremony scheduled for Monday. In a strong statement prior to his departure, Fernandes criticized the potential closure of Dabolim Airport, arguing that it would primarily benefit "chronic capitalists and private companies" such as GMR, which operates the newly inaugurated MOPA Airport.
Fernandes expressed deep concerns over several local issues, emphasizing his commitment to fighting for the rights of Goans. "The six rivers we need to reclaim are being nationalized," he stated, highlighting the adverse impacts of such actions on local communities. Additionally, Fernandes vowed to address the contentious issues surrounding Goa's 105 km coastal belt, currently under the control of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA).
The MP also criticized ongoing infrastructure projects, including double tracking, road expansion, and the Tamnar power project. He labeled the Tamnar project as a "big lie" and a "fraud," pointing out that Goa currently has a 40% power surplus. "This project is not for the common people of Goa," Fernandes asserted, suggesting it serves other interests.
Fernandes' remarks underline his dedication to protecting Goa's natural resources and ensuring that development projects benefit the local population rather than external interests. His upcoming tenure in parliament is expected to be marked by vigorous advocacy on these critical issues.
