@@jameshenley2323 well, apparently it's just Stanley Kubrick's favorite film. That's what brought me to come see it so maybe it being in their top three isn't unreasonable.
Y’all are killing me here…OK, I’d watch SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, THE BLUES BROTHERS, MUPPETS CHRISTMAS, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, SWEENEY TODD, WEST SIDE STORY, and this…let’s throw in the rest of Sondheim too, since I’d probably watch anything else of his that became a movie…
#fromJAWStoJAZZ Four years after the release of the horror-thriller blockbuster “Jaws” (1975), in which he played the leading role*, 47-year-old Roy Scheider starred in the musical drama film “All That Jazz” (1979). He was TERRIFIC, FABULOUS, STUNNINGLY SUPERB❕ The trouper later stated that keeping up with trained dancers was, by far, the hardest and most demanding thing he had ever done physically in his career. As an actor, Roy Scheider was seldom flamboyant or glamorous, rather being a stalwart tasked with setting up more colorful characters. “All That Jazz” showed us a totally different side of him. The rough and understated Scheider was given a chance to be big, brash, and what’s more, to sing and dance‼️ The musical leaps out as a definite rarity in Scheider’s casting. He could have been stuck with the memory of past characters, hence lacking credibility and believability in “Jazz”, had he not been the utterly versatile and skilled performer he proved to be. KUDOS❕ One of the first lines, “To be on the wire is life; the rest is waiting”, is a voice-over as a man is falling from a high wire into a net (and the speaker - Scheider’s character - then admits he did not make it up). That quote refers to the title, giving it its fundamental raison d’être. The oeuvre won the Palme d’Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. And at the 52th Academy Awards, the motion picture was nominated for nine Oscars. Lauded director STANLEY KUBRICK himself called “Jazz” the “best film I think I have ever seen.” In 2001, “All That Jazz” was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Rather exceptional for a musical. In 2007, Roy Scheider was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sundance Film Festival at Brandeis University, following the screening of “Jazz”. AN ABSOLUTE MUST-SEE CLASSIC‼️ Hats 🎩 off to you, Roy Richard Scheider (1932 - 2008) 🌹… * Well, TECHNICALLY you might argue that SCHEIDER and the (nameless and uncredited!!!) GREAT WHITE SHARK co-starred in “Jaws”❕ But in the history of motion picture, has any shark ever been nominated for an Oscar❔… NOPE.
It helps that all the musical numbers are within the world of the movie. There's an explanation, it's not just people randomly breaking into song for no reason. (He's a theater choreographer so the musical numbers we see are either the ones he's rehearsing or dream sequences)
Yes, a semi autobiographical film on Bob Fosse's life made after he had a heart attack while putting on the musical Chicago, editing the film Lenny, and everything else in between. In fact, its more like that the film version of A Chorus Line (1985) ripped off the opening audition sequence of All That Jazz (1979), and not very well. I mean, the least you could say is All That Jazz did it better and first.
WHY is this not available for stream!? These stupid Hollyweirdland movie people actually think they're going to make more money by trying to get people to buy the DVD? Please. Nobody watches DVDs anymore.
This is a very good 40 years old musical movie. "Bye, Bye, Life" -musical number was so memorable in the end.
R.I.P. Bob Fosse and Roy Scheider.
3rd best movie I've ever seen. Still quite profound for all these years. When you burn the candle at both ends the wax goes twice as fast.
I cant even imagine what better than this movie
What's the first two
what's first
Youre easy to please

The only two times I could sit through a movie musical, but they’re both masterpieces: the original WEST SIDE STORY and this.
@Randy White Yup, you got me…I’m not a fan of the genre, but I could watch him dance all day…
The Blues Brothers is even better.
Blues brothers and Muppets Christmas carol for me
The Sound of Music and Sweeney Todd for me

Watched this Movie in university, when i was a student. One of the most impressive aftertaste)))
"It's Showtime, Folks!"
What a masterpiece!
I just watched it for the second time last night, and this makes me want to watch it again
Where can you buy it online can’t find anywhere.
There's no one like Bob Fosse anymore, not even close

This film won the Oscar for Best Production Design at the 1980 Awards. Over ALIEN. 😐
One of the biggest WTF moments in the history of awards. 😑
Did they reuse the costumes from Logan's Run in this?

Great movie
Certain debauched days of a hundred years ago comes to mind... How might that be sorted out again... And again.
I hate musicals. But here I am...
So do I. This is incredible

I didn't know this existed. Is this a ripoff of Chorus Line? Reminds me of The Apple.

I have bought hand dvds for as cheap as £1 per DVD. It’s environmentally-friendly and cheaper than streaming
You're in luck...looks like it's on Tubi and Crackle right now.
@@mistermojo1969 ohhh THANKS for the update much appreciated!!
👍😊
You are being foolish. Physical media is better than waiting for these companies to add something to streaming. Support the Criterion release.
