A few years ago I got a cheap, used office PC with integrated graphics and a 3rd gen i5 (to use as a local server) and it ran Sims 4 very well with medium settings.
But it wouldn't run on the Celeron AIO that I used as a client. Celerons are more comparable to Athlons.
That was a while ago and the poster didn't specify the model or generation of the chip, so it might be adequate, or not. Sims 4 is a pretty old game, but requires a decent amount of RAM and would benefit from an SSD.

  • @OlaftheGreat
    @OlaftheGreat 24 дня назад +652

For those of us older people who have actually been building PCs through the 2000s the Athlon line was a huge breath of fresh air from the awfulness of the Pentium 4. We also got the Athlon 64, the first backwards-compatible 64-bit x86 chip!
Yes the Athlon II line might not be suitable for anything modern (it is debatable that it'd run The Sims 4 all that well) but trying to pretend that the Athlon line has almost always sucked is revisionist history.

The funny thing is when the Athlon first hit the market that was actually the first AMD CPU to ever truly dominate the intel competition. I used to own an Athlon Thunderbird 1400 MHz from 2002 to around 2008. And nothing Intel had at the time was as fast. They made a 1400 MHz CPU half a year later. And the performance of that one with the AMD one were very dependent on the task. AMD had larger L1 cache, Intel had larger L2 cache and the intel chip was the one to introduce SSE instructions while AMD had their own 3DNow instructions. But Athlon as a brand is basically like Intel's Pentium brand. It used to be the absolute top of the line not just for the company but for the market in general. And after introducing newer chips the brand simply went down the stack when newer brands were introduced.

It'd be fine for retro gaming or if its a X4 on AM3/ + it'd be fine for low end games as its almost the same thing as a Phenom II by a lesser branding.
And technically that was one of AMD's brief times of dominance slightly. (slightly better than a core2quad, one of their others is back in the 486 era)
And in the early 2000s Athlon was once the high end chip naming convention.

athlon cpus are totally alright considering their super-budget price range, hell I used a 3000g for years with few problems. they're reliable, have some wiggle room for overclocking if you're careful, and most importantly, you can switch it out with a better cpu down the line when you have the money. it's obviously not the *only* route for a budget computer, but it's your best bet if you are intent on new components

Saying that Athlon was never an Option for gaming is Bullshit.
I started gaming on PC with Intel (Pentium MMX), I had a Duron afterwards, Athlon, Pentium 4, FX-6300.
The last one I got fro free so In do not mind the brand.
I used the FX-6300 with an RX 570 for Gaming.
I changed to Ryzen 7 7700 in April, still with the RX 570.
It depends on the titles you want to play and you cannot expect high framerates of course.
Both for the FX and Ryzen, the diffrence is that with titles that use more CPU Power you have way more stable Framerates.
When you depend on a cheap CPU, you won't by the latest games on steam. Maybe Epic games, that are for free every week that need more CPU Power.
But I agree with the conclusion.
I would not start buidling a gaming PC with an Athlon, or only when I get the parts for free or pocket money at maximum.
