I test drove a base model SLE 1.5T a couple months ago and was blown away. I couldn't believe how well this compact SUV rode and handled. Absolutely blown away. ZERO body roll, eats up bumps while staying firm. The styling is VERY upscale. I can see how some people might not like how bold it is but it is hard to argue that it isn't modern and luxurious. I've been driving a 2016.5 Malibu with the same engine for 3 years and love it. BUT, in this vehicle, paired with the 9 speed, it is a whole new level of responsiveness. The 6 speed is smooth but slow to respond. This 9 speed is geared for performance but is still smooth. I had ZERO complaints. I love Chevy, but the look of this Terrain blows away the Equinox. Especially in the rear. The square rear end of the Equinox is butt ugly. I have no idea why this dude doesn't like this vehicle. Sure, the Denalis are ALWAYS overpriced because there are always morons who will pay an extra $12,000 for leather, silly looking fake chrome grilles/trim, and 20" wheels.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and styling is always subjective...that being said, you're completely insane if you think the older Terrain looks better than this new one.
Ravenlynn I 2nd your motion...hideous was the exact word I said used when I got my first glimpse. I then bough a 2017 ...loaded...and I’m gonna hang on to it😑
Jaffar Abdul Baqi I purchased it and it is fantastic. The car interior is anything but cheap gmc and Chevy for the equinox they went out of there way to make it better then all of them and trust me it is. I test drive all cars in the class and I went with the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and the 2019 GMC Terrain. The plastic in the Mazda feels cheap. I’m sick of all the journalists being busiest.
Can you provide the link to this government’s test that gave the Terrain 3 stars on rear side protection please? I can only find 5-star ratings on the IIHS and NHTSA.
I just picked up a 2018 Denali and I love this ride! Lots of get-up from a 4cyl and great mileage. Plenty of room for the snowboard crew and all our gear.
Quit showing the absolute top trim level. I'm going to be picking up my SLE later today, and with all the rebates available it's costing roughly $17,000. At that price point, it will compete with just about anything on the market.
Why would a reviewer of a vehicle not show the top trim level? Isn't their goal to show ALL features available to any given car? Also... this vehicle in 2018 started at $26k... even if you got a few grand off from rebates, there is no way you got a new one for $17k. Stop lying. lol
I just drove off the lot with my new 2018 Terrain SLE. I don't know what you people's problem is but I Love Love it! Pretty snow white, attractive grille and runs smooth as silk. I'm waiting for the review of the Equinox so car gurus and most of you can bash the hell out of that make also!!! Just stop it already. They'll always find problems with EVERY make and model of ALL cars.
5 star crash for front and back in 2020. Sorry, boss, you appeared to want that alone to be the killer factoid back in 2018. Also, completely disagree with the styling comparison and assessment vs the older Terrain. I had two "older" Terrains and just got a 2020 Denali. It is night and day more attractive, and it beats the CX-5. Start the videos with "Not a GM guy". Would be a lot easier.
Great review can you share your thoughts on why GMC removed the ability to display navigation directions, phone, and radio presentation from the driver information center on the 2018 Terrain Denali? This is available on older GMC vehicles that are not in the Denali tier.
woocoheed The crash worthiness is good. Those electronic aides are not recognized by the insurance companies and provide no discount on the owner premiums.
My complaint is with the "floating roof" design that seems to be the go to design element for everyone these days. But design is certainly a personal thing - both interior and exterior. The 2019 gets a 5-star rating across the board from NHTSA. These are heavily discounted, just as the Acadia's are. I suspect they are moving quite well for GMC.
What other 2017-2018 SUV's come with a turbo and don't cost an arm and a leg? I'm having a hard time making the switch from a car to an SUV because of the lack of get up and go. Unfortunately I have champagne taste in a beer budget LOL
I purchased it and it is fantastic.
I test drove one recently, the midgrade model SE or LE model at my local Dealership.....I could buy it for under $24,000 but I passed after driving it.
Great review and Thank You for it. Does the infotainment unit display driving/turn directions on the driver's dashboard near the gauges when using the navigation? No one from GMC can answer this question. Some say it does while others say it should. LOL. Seems like a common feature on vehicles since 2015.
Using Android auto, the navigation shows up on the large center screen in the dash. The nice thing about phone access to the head unit is that it provides navigation at all trim levels with Android or Apple phones.
No, in the center dash screen. It is a larger, full color screen. That is on the SLE version. I do not know if the Denali package offers something different.
Given the fact that there is such a large screen that is color in the middle of the dash, I am not surprised that they did not opt to squeeze the navigation into the small screen area in front of the driver that is monochromatic at present. Using Google Maps, the display in the center of the dash shows the map, current location, distance until next turn and calls out the navigation through the sound system. I actually like that arrangement.
The pricing for this is a little bit too high for some of its interior finish choices & the safety tech omissions. The Equinox Premier or even the Tucson Limited with the Ultimate Package are much better crossovers
@@afcgeo882 Fantastic engines? They are currently in a lawsuit over their 2.4 4 Cyl engine. Only reason i didnt buy a jeep is because their Renegades, Compass, and Cherokee all burn oil like crazy. Jeep even admits you have to add a quart of oil every 750 miles
Kyle Martin You can’t base things on filed lawsuits. You have to see how they pan out. Unfortunately, as most manufacturers are moving to lighter weight oil and looser piston rings, the oil consumption issue has become widespread and their definition of how much oil use is “normal” has changed dramatically. You will find that FCA is very not alone in that.
Robert Lussier The crash worthiness is good. Those electronic aides are not recognized by the insurance companies and provide no discount on the owner premiums.
Seems to me if vehicle safety was that big of a deal to you, you wouldn't spend half the video driving while looking down at the camera instead of paying attention to the road.
Saoirse The crash worthiness is good. Those electronic aides are not recognized by the insurance companies and provide no discount on the owner premiums.
Hi Mike, I own a 2018 Terrain Denali and I just have three complaints: 1 - One-touch automatic window switch on the driver's window only. 2 - No light in the glove box. 3- Other Than Denali logos no significant improvements on the interior quality material as they kept the cheap $23K base model plastics on the $43K Denali version. Other than that I love my new Terrain Denali.

Wow, this GMC makes getting the Buick TourX Essence for a lot less a no-brainer as both will do the same thing and the Buick has way more posh factor...a cool practical Buick [wagon]?? Say it ain't so...the end must certainly be near...🌋
You can get a MAXED out RAV-4 for _much_ less. (You're starting to get into loaded _Highlander_ pricing at $44k.) AND, the Terrain would compare with the Lexus _NX,_ not the _RX._ Literally the EXACT same length (182.3 in) as the Lexus NX. You can get a loaded NX with AWD for this price, including the Hybrid with 31 combined mpg with 194 hp. And, the Lexus gets a 5 Star Safety rating while this GMC gets 4 Stars. And we know the reliability of Lexus and Toyota is the very highest. Now, some may still prefer the GMC, but the Terrain compares with the NX, NOT the RX. Shockingly ignorant review.

$44k for a compact crossover? No way would I pay that. I bought a (gently used) 2018 GMC Acadia Denali with much more room and features for $36k. Only 22k on the odometer so like new... sorry to the sucker who paid these high prices for this vehicle lol
John Skogman Not whe the $8,000 discounts are subtracted from MSRP. The reliability is amoung the best for a newly redesigned vehicle and the price is icing on the cake compared to the competition.
nunyabiznes nunyabiznes This middle $30's after discounting and right in line with CR-V 1.5t EX-L AWD at $37,000. Much rather have 2.0T in the Terrain or Equinox. Plus these two have many less repairs than CR-V which one of the highway repair rates in the segment.
A few points: (We recently bought a 2019 Terrain SLE-2 AWD. I am looking at the window sticker as I write this) Where did you get your safety information? The Terrain earns 5 STARS for ALL (4) seating positions. NOT 3 Stars for rear side impact as you said. We drove a lot of vehicles before buying the Terrain. This vehicle excels in many areas. Anyone else catch this?
Nice enough truck which, like a surprising number of GM vehicles, is about 15% overpriced. Mid 30s this is fine. Mid 40s not so much. Not sure what GM is thinking about. -wrote before he got to safety miss deal breaker. What a disappointment.
Michael Hrisca Used or CPO is the way to go. But when the Terrain/Equinox twins are $7,000 off MSRP, the $19K Equinox 1.5t AWD is $7,000 less than CR-V 1.5t AWD.
I had a chance to look at the new Terrain Denali. Right way then i open the front hood i felt like a cheated idiot. You cannot even install simple holding struds? When i see so called top vehicle and bloody cheap rod to support hood all charm goes away. 100 years ago all hoods had holing springs ,so after opening there was unobstructed acess to engine. Only cheap ones used that what i call "barbecue" rod. As an old driver , no metter what ,right hand always rested on gear shift - ready to switch manual if i had slow the vehicle. Always gear selector must be installed at the stearing weel on such way like for instance "Malibu"2009". Most ergonomically design feature. I seldom use brakes to slow down vechicle-only to make final stop. Tragically Terrain robbed driver from most needed feature handy. For me is simply to paifull to comfortably operate that vehicle and to be frank any vehicle witch deviate form such standard, proven tool.Next thing i deeply hate are those Cap holders witch distract sweeping lines of the interior body. If installed they has to be covered by some sliding doors ,or sliding itself from instan view.To me those cap holders look like spitting jars- nothing to look at.So many desingers change for sake of changing, not to truly improve , and, absolutely preserve well tested and proven features.
I wanted to like and buy the Terrain but the ability to see out the rear window and rear quarter panel window is .. simply ... pathetic. Outback for me
why were you not impressed? On the Terrain, I look over my right shoulder and the view out the back including right passenger back seat bulkhead is awful. Terrain is not alone in poor visibility but it's a strength of the outback. No sure why the Terrain / Equinox is so bad but I assume it's needed to support the panoramic window / rollover.
Hi TruthHasSpoken, I bought a 2018 Terrain Denali and have logged over 2000 miles on my Denali, and I have yet to look out the rear quarter window, and since it doesn't have a third row, my back seat passengers don't look out those windows either. As with any truck and SUV you only need your mirrors to maneuver in tight spots, and with the 360 degrees birds eye camera system you have excellent visibility all around. I just have three complaints: 1 - One-touch automatic window switch on the driver's window only. 2 - No light in the glove box. 3- Other Than Denali logos no significant improvements on the interior quality material as they kept the cheap $23K base model plastics on the $43K Denali version. Other than that I love my new Terrain Denali.
Thank you Ivan. If not the Outback, perhaps I'll buy yet another mini-van. I can stretch out my legs and knees on a long trip and I can see through my blind spot (I weakness of mine perhaps). I do wonder: do American's really want 300-400 hp and to accelerate from 0-60 in 5 seconds? I'd rather have the former than the latter. Also, I DO like the 360 visibility systems you mentioned. I've rented cars with them and think the technology is pretty cool.
après 5 mois d'utilisation ce véhicule est simplement superbe. Toyota.....= cash pour les professionnelles comme Cargurus et autres du même genre, rappeler vous RPM subventionné pas toyota et Canadian Tire...
He only looked at the most expensive version. I am currently leasing the SLE and I also have a Toyota RAV4 on lease. There are some things I like better about the GMC. Similarly equipped, the GMC is a cheaper lease. Since my RAV 4 is a hybrid that was a mid cycle mod, the cargo area on the RAV 4 has greatly reduced utility because the rear seat has batteries under it causing the cargo area to ramp upwards. Toyota does not offer Android Auto. Having navigation and music options from the phone on the infotainment screen is a huge advantage over the Toyota. The rear seat on the GMC is noticeably roomier than on the Toyota. On the down side, the GMC mileage is averaging at 24mpg while the hybrid Toyota gets 30mpg. In very cold winter weather, the GMC will often exhibit a dead throttle response when attempting to accelerate from a stop for the first mile or so and the nine speed transmission can rough shift until warmed up when it is zero degrees outside. In short, the GMC competes with better feature for price at mid trim level, rear seat room and better phone interface capability.
Matt Hirn dead throttle response and rough shifting until engine warms up have been a problem with Gm since forever I have an 2013 Equinox same issue. On other hand you cannot put price on bad crash test rating.
GM does have a reputation of customer base refinement of their designs that goes back to when I was a kid. The market is not so forgiving of the fix-it-in-production way of doing things these days. The low crash rating is a significant concern that I missed. My point is that in the mid trim level, there are some merits that make the Terrain competitive in the segment. That said, I have been driving the 2018 since late November in a large metropolitan area and I have yet to see another 2018 Terrain on the road.
asif aslam Our 2017 Terrain never had a transmission or engine problem in almost 50,000 miles before getting another GMC. It never returned to the delaership except for free oil changes and tire rotations.

It looks "fine," it looks like just another SUV now. The previous design looked "quasi-truck-like" from the front which was a big appeal.
As a Truck Driver and someone who is coming back to GM from Ford, I was a little surprised by the Terrain Denali myself...
Thank you for an honest and thorough review. I would, however, not call the styling boring or dull. I think it is handsome and different.

No way Jose! 44k for a compact GMC? You can get a top notch Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 for 10k less.
you can save like 8k-9k. So they end up being 34k for a fwd denali

Chris, I might replace my washer machine. What brand would you recommend based on your reviews.
LMAO
Thank you for your honest review Chris!
2018.5 year models of the equinox and terrain were fixed, so the rear passenger crash test is now 5 stars. No longer 3 stars.

Nice enough truck which, like a surprising number of GM vehicles, is about 15% overpriced. Mid 30s this is fine. Mid 40s not so much. Not sure what GM is thinking about. -wrote before he got to safety miss deal breaker. What a disappointment.
I bought a 2012 BMW X5 diesel for $15.000 with 50k miles. Will never buy a new car. No GMC, no Lexus, no RAV4 or Highlander. What a waste of money
Chevrolet Equinox has the traditional shifter mounted to the console.
No longer made in Canada. I would stay away.
I wanted to like and buy the Terrain but the ability to see out the rear window and rear quarter panel window is .. simply ... pathetic.
Outback for me
I own a 2016 Outback Prem. 2.5 Not super overall impressed......
why were you not impressed?
On the Terrain, I look over my right shoulder and the view out the back including right passenger back seat bulkhead is awful. Terrain is not alone in poor visibility but it's a strength of the outback. No sure why the Terrain / Equinox is so bad but I assume it's needed to support the panoramic window / rollover.
Hi TruthHasSpoken,
I bought a 2018 Terrain Denali and have logged over 2000 miles on my Denali, and I have yet to look out the rear quarter window, and since it doesn't have a third row, my back seat passengers don't look out those windows either.
Hideous front grill design ! and it's huge too.
This is a fail for GM. Wow. No radar cruise or real auto braking. Even more alarming is the low 3 star crash test score. SMH.
canonlybeme4life I googled this and the NHTSA says the side crashing is 5 stars!
IIHS gives it the highest rating in all crash tests!
canonlybeme4life 5 stars
après 5 mois d'utilisation ce véhicule est simplement superbe.
Toyota.....= cash pour les professionnelles comme Cargurus et autres du même genre, rappeler vous RPM subventionné pas toyota et Canadian Tire...
Another boo boo from GMC such a shame nice design with alot of promise to an abrupt end.
I really liked the way it use to look, why couldn't GM make minor cosmetic changes to the out side and improve it underneath
This terrain is now sisters with the Trax NOT the equinox, so u cant compare it to the cr-v it the rav-4
I have had the sister to the Trax (Buick Encore). This vehicle is noticeable larger in every way. It is not on the Trax chasis is it?
you are wrong, the sister of this car IS the equinox
Stupid test car
Uglyy asss car
Looks good
