If you look into it, he never intended to get big, he just gave a dude 50% royalties for a portion of the song he took a few notes from instead of going to court and doesnt rent the song to ad companies while encouraging people to use it freely

Gotye is what i like to call a "submarine band" they aren't one hit wonders, they have a pretty respectable if niche audience, they make a big chart topper and after that just dip back into their niche.not really one hit wonder, where they make one song and fade into complete obscurity.
I consider the proclaimers, daft punk (though they are pushing it), chumbawumba to be these kind of bands

Also he is still active just doesn't care about being in the spotlight. He has been making music and involved in various projects the entire fucking time. He has made other music, one of his other songs is called “Hearts A Mess” he made it before this song. When STIUTK was made, it blew up and he didn’t want to have his music style get changed by that fame so he backed out. He had so many offers from people who wanted to use his song in their ads but he turned the millions of dollars away (it is theorized that it was more than $10 million). The song is free use for student films and projects because that is basically what he wanted people to use his music for. He wanted to push for creativity etc.. I strongly recommend “Hearts a mess” it’s a really good song (weird ass music video).

I'm sad this song gets memed on because it's a legitimately good song. It's about an emotionally charged situation where no matter how reasonably you attempted to act there's always a chance you wind up the villain in the other person's story. How sometimes there's no right path, no high road to take, and cutting them off - though it hurts - is the only path that leads forward.
It's just the two sides of the same coin... Feeling like you were both fucked over by the other, even though you made mistakes yourself too...
Also the fact that, indeed, the other can also just respectfully move on, instead of just acting like they never knew you... Or "somebody that they used to know"...

I really got into Gotye after this song came out. If anyone wants any suggestions, my favourites are: "State of the Art", "Hearts a Mess", "Eyes Wide Open", "Easy Way Out", and "Thanks For Your Time". Someone else in the comments mentioned "Save Me", and that's also a really beautiful one! Really, the whole Making Mirrors album (which is the album "Somebody That I Used to Know" came on) is worth a listen. He's so talented.
All jokes aside, Gotye released a song called “Eyes Wide Open” that’s really freaking good.
The whole making Morris album is a journey. You should check out his other work.

That "WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT ROLLING DOWN IN THE DEEP GUY" legit gave me the same feeling I do from hearing a rick roll during a video I was enjoying.
This has probably been said a lot in the comments (hopefully), but Gotye has made HEAPS of amazing songs. Some of them are flat out better than Somebody That I Used To know (tho it's definitely a great song) but without the appeal to a mass demographic. These songs collectively have hundreds of millions of views/listens... and while that might not measure up to his #1 hit, it's still far greater success than most musicians have.
Seriously though check out Coming Back, Eyes Wide Open, Hearts a Mess, Night Drive, Bronte-- plenty of amazing Gotye songs to be heard.
His videos are always interesting.

I was extremely weirded out by listening to that on the radio when I was in middle school. That song truly didn't fit with any trend from that time, it sounded like something from Little Big Planet which I loved, then I realized it was really trendy! Then it fade, I believe it was not a song or artist meant for being a comercial trend, but somehow it did!
ppl thought it was STING.But yeah, 2012 was when Dubstep,Electro house and Rap were blowing up in the US.. so this was like a fresh breath of air when it came out. Def ... listen to the strokes CALL IT FATE CALL IT KARMA , to me it's like the sequel to this song.
Haha, I always thought I was really cool and refreshing because it had such a distinct vibe for being on mainstream radio. There were a few other hits like that too, around those years.
I hated the radio version. Someone somewhere decided they needed to shit all over Gotye's art by adding a stupid drum loop and speeding up the tempo. The song was fantastic on its own it didn't need to check off the "don't scare people with something different" checklist.
Weirdly enough, this feels like when you have a conversation with someone who repeats the same points sometimes, followed by someone who throws in a random information, before returning to the main point.

Actually, Gotye has a lot of great songs. Thing is that this one is the most "pop-like" he wrote. I suggest y'all to look up to his discography. You'll be impressed.

he didnt actually dip techinically, his stage name is gotye and in 2014 he announced in a newsletter that he would no longer be releasing music under his stage name. he stopped making music under his stage name, however, he is still quite active, playing in a band called The Basics.

Making mirrors was his third album and well worth a stream, Smoke and Mirrors and Eyes Wide Open my fave tracks. Heart's a Mess was an earlier single that was huge in Australia, Thanks for Your Time another bop very relatable if you've worked customer service. He did dip though I can't argue with that.

Gotye wasn't exactly a one hit wonder, but he sure gets called one all the time. I bet he would have a few decently popular songs more on him.
The album that that song was on was actually pretty dope. It’s how I found Kimbra and I’m very grateful for that because she is easily my favorite modern female vocalist.
