I went to this tour and it was advertised on the radio that they would be playing the entire Moving Pictures album. As great as that was, I just wanted to see Rush in concert again. It was a great show. I think that their best show was Vapor Trails because it was their comeback and they played so many great songs. Otherwise, I really liked the energy of the Grace Under Pressure concert.
Considering Geddy was fighting a cold, I think he sounds great in this concert. Love the skit, Kugel (played by Geddy's daughter) is a Yiddish word and can be used to describe a kind of cake or casserole, savoury or sweet. Thanks for the 4th. of July greeting, would have been nice to have Canada day acknowledged in consideration of your Canadian subscribers.
Seeing the kid with ear protection reminds me of this past Canada Day (July 1st). I took my seven-year-old, sound sensitive son to the local fireworks display wearing a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort wireless headphones with noise cancelling engaged. That wasn't good enough, so I played him about seven songs from this live album at about 1/3 to assist the noise cancelling circuit. He loved it and has told me a few times since how great Rush is with fireworks.
Fun side note: the girl playing Kugel is actually Geddy’s daughter. It really really became a family affair for Ged with his brother and daughter getting involved in the Rush world. Fun.
Love this concert. They are so on point musically and the audio mix is superb. So many great live versions to come Justin. Freewill is awesome, as is Camera Eye, Vital Signs and Working Man
I was at two Toronto shows and yes we knew Moving Pictures was going to be played in its entirety. It’s a big reason why I went….to see The Camera Live and Vital Signs live. They opened the second half of the concert with the full album non-stop and it was amazing.
I personally like Geddy’s vocals here. Yes, he does get pitchy on occasion but I like the lower register he sings in here. More importantly, musically they are astounding here. From a sheer musical standpoint this may be my favorite live DVD.
I knew. Also this tour was the only time I saw them live (and the only time they came to Chile)As my wife recalls it “it was so weird to see a 40000 crowd of grown men crying out of happiness and emotions”
You can definitely see the SCTV influence on the boys in that sketch. They actually did a great job. Comedic acting isn't easy to do well. As for the performance... well, it sounded exactly like what it was: The Spirit Of Radio 30 years after it was first released after a lot of wear and tear.
Caught them twice on this tour. I knew ahead of time they were playing all of MP. They had just reissued a remastered version for the 30th anniversary of its release. Not everyone knew, though. At one show, the guys behind me started realizing what was happening when they got to Limelight.
I was at this show. Yeah, they advertised that they were doing all of MP. Great concert! Geddy's aging voice notwithstanding. But they played beautifully and the crowd loved it
I saw this tour, his vocals don't bother me,they played amazing & getting to see them play the camera eye was worth the admission price alone, the stage & lighting were the icing on the cake. Cut geddy some slack, not many singers who have been singing for that long can keep their voice in peak condition,it follows everything south.
Yes, we knew all of MP was getting performed. I was fortunate to attend this show in Cleveland. Love being able to see and hear it again whenever I want. Second most special of the 20 shows I saw over the years. First was snakes and Arrows when I got to meet Geddy and Alex. As big a fan as I am, I can't argue about his voice. It got bad sadly. But I don't care. It's still Rush!!
Yup! I knew they’d play the whole album. Saw this tour at Red Rocks, CO. The video screen broke down halfway through this intro skit, but they recovered and just started the show.
We knew months ahead of time that Moving Pictures would be played in its entirety. It was revealed in Live Nation's original press release on April 8, 2010 and opening night wasn't until June 29, 2010.
You can laugh or make fun of Rush fans, but there isn't a musician out there, including yourself, who wouldn't give their left testicle to have this kind of devotion. The best fans.
@@JustinPanariello He has said many many times how much he appreciated the fans, he just didn't want them showing up at his house. A very private person and I respected that.Rush fans are amazing.
Geddy said in their last Rolling Stone interview that they learned over the years to write songs in a key he could more easily sing. That's part of what made R40 so rough--they included a lot of older songs before they figured that out.
Saw this tour five times, if I remember correctly. They just kept getting better and better as musicians-they killed it. Geddy was definitely tired by this point in their career but I give the dude props. He was out there every night, giving it his absolute all-not hiding behind auto-tune or prerecorded vocals to cover any sins. Left it all on the stage.
There is an interview where Neil talks about how he worked with Sabian to come up with a way to paint gears and alchemy symbols on the cymbals without acting as resonant dampeners and muting their sound. DW also helped out by changing some of their tightening handles on the drum rack for more gear-looking options. I think they went to hardware stores and bought outdoor water tap handles and then gold-plated them to match the theme. EDIT: Found the link to that interview... ruclips.net/video/PEaoi4qi4UU/видео.html
The band announced they were going to play all of Moving Pictures in advance. A lot of bands were touring play past albums in full. Neil said somewhere that he saw Steely Dan play complete versions of past albums and thought it was a good idea.
Clockwork Angels takes place in a steampunk universe. They started it visually on Time Machine, then ramped it up a bit for the C.A. tour. Neil reused this kit for that tour, as well.
Awesome. Great memory introducing my daughters to Rush on this tour in Baltimore. When they started playing they didnt even seem human. They sounded so good. Even my kids were amazed at how good they sounded and played. So different being there vs watching recording(Sorry Justin). Also remember thinking Presto, Time Stands Still, Camera Eye, Caravan, and Farcry being awesome.
Griping about Geddy’s voice at this point is just petty. Sure it’s not what it used to be, NO SHIT. Most singers lose some of their range and tonality over the years but I think Geddy’s has held up pretty well considering the style of music they play AND the amount of time he’s been singing.🤘🖖✌️🎤🎤🎤
"The future as seen from the past."--steampunk is sooo cool especially that drumkit. It's gotta be one of the most elaborate and expensive kits ever made.
We were front row at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, $750 for 2 tickets, last time we ever seen them in concert, First time out of 23 Rush concerts in the front row, ears rang for a week after lol.
Love the intro . Love how they don’t take themselves seriously even though they are the most fantastic musicians ..❤❤Must have been fun them rehearsing the intro . Would love to see the outakes…❤❤
You didn’t read the Wikipedia tour info: “The Time Machine Tour was a concert tour by the Canadian rock band Rush that began on June 29, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and ended July 2, 2011 at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. The tour was notable for featuring the album Moving Pictures played in its entirety for the first time live, as well as material from the band's then upcoming studio album Clockwork Angels (i.e. the songs "Caravan" and "BU2B", which had been released as a single in early June 2010).[1][2] This tour is one of three where the setlist has been consistent throughout the entire tour, the others being the 1987 Hold Your Fire tour and the 2004 R30: 30th Anniversary Tour. This is also the first Rush tour to not include any songs from Roll the Bones in the set list since that album was released in 1991.”
I was there and knew what we were in for ahead of time (no pun intended). Couldn't wait for The Camera Eye and wasn't disappointed. At this point, Geddy's voice is/was an easy target, but the man sounded great singing some extremely challenging material for years and years. He really kept it up. As a point of comparison, take someone like Bruce Dickinson, whose voice sounded good for maybe two tours before he couldn't sing the band's material correctly anymore. Of course, his voice enjoyed a renaissance in the early 2000s, but his initial peak didn't last long. I make fun of Geddy's late-stage howling as much as anyone else, armchair bastard that I am, but he did pretty damn well over the decades - beetter than many hard rock vocalists.
Yeah, I went to this tour in Nashville in April of 2011. And I did see the set list on the internet. There were about two or three songs that they would interchange between shows, but the big news was the entirety of moving pictures. One of the security guys working asked me how many bands were playing that night and I said just one. He couldn’t believe it. And as far as Geddy’s voice, it was strange cause all the recordings sound really bad, but I thought he sounded great that night. Which was weird cause I would figure post editing was supposed to be better. The only thing mix wise at the show was one of Neil’s toms, was mixed noticeably louder than the others, so it was a little jarring, but I thought it sounded great otherwise.
Saw this one in Nashville and remember Geddy having to strain a bit. Don’t tell anyone but I called in sick to work! My 3rd daughter was born in February that year and I used all my vacation!
I love the "steampunk" design kit with the copper plated hardware. The steampunk graphic designs with unique ink (that wouldn't affect sound) on the Neil Peart co-designed Paragon by Sabian symbols are awesome looking. This was definitely my favorite designed kit, even over the 24 Carat Gold plated hardware R-30 & R-40 kits.
Alex's 3 amps are offstage but the steampunk-style cabinets house his speakers as well as the video screens and pipeline for steam jets! The controls on the front are just cosmetic. Hughes and Kettner were excited to put the cabinets on the market and had requests for them, but somehow I doubt that idea lasted very long... 😂
This has a whole new meaning to me these days now that my oldest took up tuba for concert band and marching band. lol Ahhh..just noticed the guitar Alex is using is the Gibson version of the brand new Epiphone model that just came out a week ago. Second signature guitar for Alex under the Epiphone name. And it is getting great reviews.
I think it was an anniversary of moving pictures and I think that's how they advertised the show. They played this one at a small outdoor arena here in Kansas City. The only time I can remember they toured without supporting a new album.
I love in the skit that Neil the atheist make the sign of the cross on his chest. LOL Regarding the height of Neil's arms when he plays...after his lessons with Freddie Gruber, he changed the configuration of his drums and the height in which he played them at. He set them REALLY high. He was a tall guy, so I guess it worked for him...I myself tried it and it just seemed awkward.
I saw this tour at the NYS Fair. Had 6th row seats. It was advertised that they would be doing all of Moving Pictures. It was noticeable but not surprising that he couldn’t sing like he used to. In the moment it never bothered me at all, but I get the concern. Alex was pretty awesome the night I saw them.
I completely agree with you on the voice and trying not to hear it. You can't when you've listened to as much classical, opera, soul, etc... Just cannot ignore it. I have the Time Machine DVDs and have watched it maybe twice. I'm not sure I can watch it again. I'll try. To be the more positive is the music is still kicking. :)
This led to Clockwork Angels...which is a steampunk journey. Neil I believe wrote an accompanying book cause I know how you love to read/sarc obviously...PS...I think Geddy sounds pretty good.
In latter years rush advertised playing things like moving pictures or book 1 and book. 70s stuff except moving pictures.helped them draw us old people
Regarding Neil's arm in the second verse - he's doing a kind of strange thing, going back and forth between his floor tom and crash. It's not a pattern you see drummers do very often, but if you kind of keep the arm out like that it lets you pivot at the elbow rather than reach "up" to get the crash. After his work with Freddie, Neil was all about economy of motion.
I love this song, but I also love Prime Mover, hahahaha !! Different.... Not downhills from here... Clockwork Angels was not out yet in 2011.... Dude !!! For my part, I can't live without Dirk's voice. RUSH is teh ID of mastercrafting musicianship.
I loved this tour. they really just jammed out and it was all hilarious. No I did not know their set list till after. But loved every min of this tour. Keep it up. thanks JP.
If you don't like it, I agree. But you can give up. I was in Cleveland that night on a trip for work. Wanted to cancel my trip to see them but didn't want to pay for a plane ticket out of my pocket. Anyway I seen them eight times on this tour. Everyone was awesome. Wish I knew they were recording a video, I would have stayed!
I’ve always thought putting up with geddy’s struggles with vocals as a) we all get older and struggle to do what we used to do, and b) if he didn’t get out there and perform we would have missed all the other aspects of their musicianship.
This was the first tour i missed since Test for Echo, mainly because they didnt come to my town. I had a young daughter, and a son on the way, and was in a different point in life, so Rush was only in the top 5 priorities, rather than top 3 lol.
don’t remember this tour but i know for clockwork angels i saw them within the first 10 shows and by then the set list was easy to find plus videos and clips from the first few shows so it’s possible that was a thing with moving pictures
Geddy could technically still hit most of his high notes but not for the duration of a tour like that so he did tone a lot down and limit his use of higher registers. He speaks about it in an interview, how he had to learn to take care of his voice on tour (less cold drinks, milk, etc). It's a rough reality of getting older but I personally thought he did pretty well.
Anyone who says his voice was great during this tour needs their hearing tested, is in denial, or is just plain old crazy. This is coming from a long-time fan beginning in 1982. Very happy that they were touring and sounding good still musically, ecstatic even! But let’s face reality… his voice was definitely having some issues. It’s VERY evident.
Saw them a lot and didn’t understand why it seemed he was screaming and straining on this tour. Saw it 3 times and yes the internet gave it all away in advance.
Geddy was pretty sick for this show. I saw them a few times this tour and he didn’t sound nearly this bad. Apparently he had a bad strep throat which ended up as a bad ear infection. I think he had his ear drum punctured and drained literally a week or so before the show. Might have the timing wrong but he was definitely suffering for this recording.
I don’t think of you as a Rush channel but I do think of you as a discography channel. I know you do other stuff and I watch those too but I think your sweet spot and channel success is tied to doing discographies of Rush adjacent bands like Kansas, Styx, Genesis. (You think Rush’s discography is big don’t even think about Yes’s as much as I would love it) so, that’s my opinion and my opinions always right.
Unfortunately life got crazy for me for about a decade and the Snakes and Arrows tour was the last Rush tour I got to see. This is a cool show, and Geddy’s bad vocals has been greatly exaggerated, a few rough spots here and there but overall he’s solid.
Yeah, we knew they were doing all of MP. It was definitely a draw. This is the start of what I call the "Victory Lap" phase of Rush's career. You know you've achieved a level of success when the drums have custom artwork on every piece. Plus the stage props, the set design, the videos... You definitely got the feeling that money was no object for Rush at this point.
My big issue with this recording is Alex's guitar sound, particularly any of the lower notes and chords. It sounds crackly to me, and it seems to get worse as the set progresses (or I just get more annoyed by it 😆). That said, I really enjoyed the show I saw on this tour, at the Minnesota State Fair.
Vocals? Meh...no more important than lyrics. But seriously, it's a very good point you bring up about only having really listened to Rush for a year and a half. That makes for a far different perspective than a fan who has been following the band for decades. It would be like seeing Larry Bird at the end of his career after all the injuries and having no reference point to how good he was in his prime other than videos. Losing it. "Books are for tourists"

Keep it up. thanks JP.
Yeah, the tour was advertised as featuring MP in its entirety.
The Gafilter!
Was there in Vancouver!
Geddy’s monocle! You do know he is in the guiness book of world records for having the largest monocle collection?!🤣🤣🤣
What?!?! 😂
Yeah. Steampunk. And It was announced prior to the tour that they would be playing Moving Pictures in its entirety.
Have a look at Neil's Romanian Bog Oak kit that he used for R40.

Geddy had a cold during this show
Geddy was pretty sick for this show.

What a bunch of crap! Crap, yes, but sometimes people love crap! That always makes me chuckle.
Do R40 or we riot!!!
The vocals… Yikes oh, Lordy , bit of trouble there. lol
Don't see the link about the drum kit design you mentioned.

Geddy’s voice is dodgy for the first few tracks, after that he’s absolutely fine.
I think Geddy actually sounds better on R40.
so as a vocalist have you heard anyone hit those notes vocally
What notes are you talking about?
Another thing Geds voice wasn’t spectacular here. It was easy to look past when they were still so capable of bringing it musically!!!
This is giving me a headache already...
