Tracing is technically a gateway into the art world but there's rules to it. It can be a learning tool but also can easily be missused.

Tracing is fine if you're learning, as long as you never post it. Unfortunately, tracers have half a brain cell and post it anyway.
Uh is referencing a crime too? I mean, when I'm not sure how the anatomy really works I go find a picture for reference but the thing is I only traced the character's anatomy........ Other than that, it's me alone lol.
Often times I even change the body shape a bit to match it with my style

I actually have a question for everyone here:
Is it considered tracing when blocking in the reference's basic shapes(ie, the torso's shape, or arms/legs shape) and then using those guides to draw that pose out? I hardly do it nowadays since I started doing the occasional figure studies a couple of years back. However, when I find myself with a difficult pose, I go in with the ref photo(usually one of those meme-worthy stock photos or some generic magazine shots) and I block in the basic shapes, improvise/change it some so I'm not copying it entirely and then finally draw out the pose.
Is that all okay to even do? I'll admit that in my early years(about 4 years ago when I first started digital art) I directly traced the references and hardly changed things, called it my art, but I soon stopped once I realized that was like totally not okay. But now I'm scared I'm still doing that?
What do you guys think? Is it okay to trace out the basic building blocks of the reference to better understand it, or is it still considered a disgrace like thief-tracing? I'd like to know your opinions!
I think it's fine as long as you credit the original artist and don't solely just recolor someone else's artwork. I do that from time to time but I find it more comfortable for me to look at a reference and try to draw it from scratch.
