I am an actor and content creator with Hollywood credits including roles on Lucifer (Netflix), Starlight Christmas (Hallmark), JT Leroy (Universal Studios), etc. In this channel, I offer insight to Kpop performances using my 10+ years of training in dance, acting, singing and overall performance. In dance, my forte are contemporary and musicals and have done most of my performances in theatre. Although my channel is mostly known for dance analysis, I am currently inactive in the dance community.
Everything about EXO in ot12 era is mirrored.. Both Mama and Overdose, EXO-K and EXO-M positions always mirrors each other (example, K mainly on the right side of the stage and M on the left side of the stage). So whenever they perform as EXO (K and M combined), their choreo is a full set filled up the whole stage.. This is something that I miss from EXO choreos
I also miss the time where they suddenly switch from Korean to madarin ind the middle of a song. The old days...😍
huhuhu and even in music shows when they performed growl K and M are dancing opposite of each other. I remember downloading (illegaly 🤭🤫) those cause it was so cool!!!
those days of ot12 are now just memories and history

FACT: EXO's OVERDOSE album was the FIRST mini album to receive a DAESANG award in MAMA. On the same year, EXO won both Album of the Year and Artist of the Year in MAMA. 🔥 Their MAMA performance was amazing too! The album was insanely good! 🥰

Overdose is funny overtime, there's a lot of cases where the members get confused and mixed up especially during the pairings. Because this song have a lot of revisions in the members numbers. The original.versions: exok ver (6 members only), exom ver(6 members), exo ot12 ver (full members), then revised it to ot11(when krist left), then ot10 (when luhan left)then ot9 (after tao) and 8 member ver when lay can't make it.😂🤣
I still can't get over the time during ot12 version, where Kai forgot to go down the stage when it's time for exom to dance during the 2nd verse. Tao's expression when he saw kai with them in exom😂🤣.

So, here's some fun facts about this video. UPDATE: This was EXO'S last OT12 promo video where they fully performed, in both Korean and Mandarin.
Before, while both subunits performed in the videos it was usually said subunit that sung and rapped in each video.

Luhan is almost like every exo-L's first love. And he was part of the dance line, vocal line & visual line.

This was my first exposure to EXO and I’ve never turned back.
The EP as a whole is one of the best I've ever heard, all 5 tracks are playlist-worthy. Overdose itself never gets old, it has such a modern sound with added drama from the drumbeats + great choreography + great wardrobes. And YES to Jeff recognizing Sehun's 👑👑👑 energy when he does his strut to the center, literally my favorite part of the whole MV and rarely anyone talked about it back then.
2:59 That's Luhan. He's a former member of EXO. He left the group in 2014 due to health problems, if I remember correctly. He's still continuing his music career in China.

Agree. Their earlier songs like Mama and Wolf that has many highnotes, despite just being debuted. It's kind of hard to imagine the pressure being put on them back then. SM must have set higher expectations that EXO needs to achieve. I'm so proud on how successful they are :).

I would really say that EXO started the whole performance choreography type of dances in the 2010+ kpop industry. Starting from Wolf and Growl, you could see the stark in difference of their performances from the other leading kpop groups at that time. This is why I can’t wait for all of the members to come back as OT9, because they really do bring such an impactful performance every time.
Overdose holds a special place in my heart. It was my first exo comeback as well as just my first ever kpop comeback
I was obsessed with the mv and song when it first came out and I still love it! still a bop
"Overdose" came out in 2014 and this is one of the last MVs where all 12 members are part of the song and MV. (Kris left the group right after this MV was released and Luhan will leave within the next 6 months.)
How EXO worked back when they were split up into the two groups was that all the members were in both MVs, but the K members were featured more prominently in the K version of the song and the M members were featured in the M version. As you saw, in the EXO-K version of "Overdose" the K members sing the main parts of the song and they are the first group of 6 you see. (When you see the MV revisit the same sets a second time the group you see is the 6 EXO-M members.) If you watch the Mandarin version, you will see the M members take over the main parts of the song and MV and the K members are the ones you see second. So, even when the MVs look the same, they will always be slightly different because the members are assigned different parts in each MV.
For example, in the Korean version, the EXO-K rappers (Chanyeol and Sehun) are the ones that are part of the rap section. If you watch the Mandarin version, you will see Kris, Xiumin and Tao are the rappers because they are EXO-M's rappers. Tao is also the martial artist of the group, so he is the one that does the flips and stunts in EXO's routines. And the main vocal parts and high notes are done by Baekhyun in the Korean version, but in the Mandarin version that part is Chen's because he is EXO-M's main vocalist, etc.
You should watch the Mandarin versions of "Overdose," as well. :D If you watch EXO-M's version of "Overdose" you will understand why we say even though they may seem like they are similar MVs, there are distinct differences between the Korean and Mandarin versions that are important to EXO's storyline.
Plus, I think you may even enjoy the Mandarin version of the song just as much, or more.
Also something to note, you see Kai in the beginning and end of the MV in the Korean version because he is the center and visual of EXO-K. However, in the Mandarin version you will see Luhan fills that same role because he is the center and visual of EXO-M. Plus, Kai and Luhan were each others' power counterparts as well. So this establishes the connections between EXO-K and EXO-M. Kai and Luhan were supposed to have a bond that connected the two groups and made them one as part of EXO's storyline.
In the MV what you saw is that the members have been trapped in a maze by the Red Force and they are trying to use their superpowers to escape the maze. For example, in the Korean version you see Chen throw a beam of light which is an example of them using their powers. Chen has the power to control lightning so he tossed a lightning bolt to Lay who has the power of healing. Lay is the only one who could have caught that light beam without being injured because Lay has the power of healing and he can heal himself.
In the beginning when you see the EXO-K members making that picture while standing on each other, they are forming their hexagon symbol which is EXO's official symbol. (In the M version, you will notice it's different members.) The different sets you see, are thought to be different rooms within the maze, or maybe alternate realities or time periods created by the Red Force to lure the EXO members to them.
So, the story in the MV is pretty much the members trying to summon their powers to try and escape from the maze.The box that D.O. had at the beginning of the MV was full of dirt. D.O.'s superpower is the power of earth or dirt and it gives him strength, so he was using the sand to build his strength back up. The other members were also trying to use their powers of teleportation, fire, light, etc.
At the end of the MV we discover that the maze has only one way in and no way out. Which I think is meant to represent and mirror the fact that they are saying they are trapped by love and once you are in there is no way out. The maze was also EXO's logo for this album and it is shaped like EXO's hexagon symbol.
Although, in the song they're not overdosing on anything except love. As the English lines in the song say: "So bad, no one can stop her ... her love, her love (is) fantasy ... Oh she wants me, Oh she's got me ... Oh she hurts me ... someone call the doctor ... (her love makes me) overdose ... too much of your love makes me overdose ... too much overdose ... You're in my heart ... with you I can't stop", etc. This song is kind of a love song about how powerful love can be that it feels like no matter how much you try to resist it you keep getting pulled back in like a drug.
However, for the storyline in the MV there might be a little more at play than just being drugged by love. Some theories say that the story in "Overdose" is connected to the story in "Lucky One." In "Overdose" the members get trapped in the maze and they can't find their way out. The red light represents the Red Force who have trapped them in the maze. It is thought that the maze causes the members to get disoriented and sort of become incapacitated so they are unable to defend themselves. The maze dulls their senses and makes it so they lose the ability to use their powers at full strength, etc.The theory speculates that sometime after the end of the "Overdose" MV EXO gets captured or transferred from the maze and brought to the government facility by the Red Force and that is why we see them in a hospital-like setting in their "Lucky One" MV. In the story in the "Lucky One" MV the members are drugged and they are being experimented on to discover what makes them so special. In "Lucky One" the members use their powers to break free from the facility. And this is where some theories connect the story in "Lucky One" to the story in their "Ko Ko Bop" MV. One theory is that the story in "Ko Ko Bop" is them trying to detox from the drugs they were given in the government facility in "Lucky One" and the blue Ko Ko Bop drink Suho mixes and the members drink is supposed to counteract the effects of the drugs in their system. That is why they act so out of it and in a drugged state in "Ko Ko Bop."
As you can see all of the stories in EXO's MVs are connected. We just have to pay close attention to every detail and put the pieces together.

I freaking love overdose concept it’s the song that made me Kai stan (along with the eve dance practice) I remember how I got crazy over his dancing, stage presence and his crazy doctor concept when I first saw him

Overdose is the era where I got introduced to EXO and from then, I became a fan.
The one who did the flip in the end was Tao. He was the last chinese member that left the group after Kris & Luhan. Tao used to be a martial artist, hence his amazign abilities. It was widely known that Tao was very badly treated by SM Entertainment and was neglected & overworked a lot. He was often seen in Crutches or even Wheelchairs because SM practically forced him to perform even if he was injured already. They forced him to do all these hard tricks on stage when he should0ve been resting. They even made him buy his own medicine for his recovery. It got so bad that Tao's father went public about the whole thing and posted a letter he wrote on social media, practically begging the Company to let his son go. Tao and his family filed a lawsuit to get out of the 10 year contract but he lost. Eventually, Tao made his exit in 2015. He went back to his family in china where he recieved treatment for all the damage his body had been enduring. His father said though that due to the years of mistreatment he had gotten, his body would be suffering permanent damage. After taking some time off, Tao started doing solo music in china and despite much backlash from former fans, faulting him for leaving EXO, his music was very popular in china. With the help of his father, he built up hhis own management company and is currently one of the biggest popstars in china. Sadly his dad has passed away just last year. On a happier note though, Tao is still very close friends with Luhan. They actually have been on several chinese survival shows together as mentors & producers. Noteably "Chuang 2020", which i highly recommend watching.

The top position had to keep crouching down & the “thigh guys” looked like they were being tortured by the time they could actually start.

What i love about Overdose MV is that (aside from the members’ baby faces) the concept and quality is really timeless - doesn’t look dated at all.

My fave part of Overdose was the one line thingy dance delay, like the hallucination effect of being overdosed. Shame that it wasn't really seen in the MV but I love it when I see it in the performances in award shows/music shows.

EXO Overdose gets me emotional because it was the last ot12 mv they have. They always have Chinese Version and Korean version mv before. Unlike now, they just need to put the mandarin song with the same video shoot in Korean version.
