Banks’s ability to actually catch the ball, rather than palm or punch it away was outstanding. As another person commented previously, his ability to intercept crosses definitely must have been a tremendous help to his defenders. He stands alone as the greatest goalkeeper, not just shot stopper.
What a great goalkeeper Gordon Banks was ! The greatest ever! Legendary! When i was a young goalkeeper at school in the 60s and early 70s my idol was Gordon Banks and remember sending letters to my favourite players then asking for an autograph and Gordon Banks was the only one who replied and not only that he autographed a photo of his famous 1970 save against Pele and sent it back to me ! What a man ! I will never forget how great a goalkeeper and man he is! The greatest!
With Banks it was all down to great positional knowledge, reflexes of a cat, excellent handling and remarkable agility. He made difficult saves look easy. A true legend. RIP.
ian mcgregor hart The greatest ever and never a cocky bastard like Hart! If Banks had not been poisoned in 1970 we would have reached the final and then who knows because England were the best side in the group game in guadalahara!
I grew up in England and I remember watching Gordon Banks on Sunday afternoons he was amazing along with Lev Yashin the greatest goalkeeper that ever lived
The save from Pele; if you study the film closely, just after he tips the ball over the bar Banks's head strikes the ground in a whiplash motion. Others have mentioned the weight of the ball back then, well the hand strength required to tip that ball over will have transferred through his torso to his head, thus resulting in the whiplash motion we see. An incredible save, the pinnacle of his career.
Firstly, it doesn't include his save for Stoke against West Ham - Geoff Hurst's penalty. Secondly, the game against Liverpool is noted as October 1972, which it was. But, significantly it was 21 October. His car crash was the next day. It was his last game as the maestro.
A proper goalkeeper. Very few around today. People bang on about D Gea,he’s nothing more than a great shot stopper not a goalkeeper. There’s more to goalkeeping than stopping shots,it’s about the pressure you can take off of your defence by catching crosses, commanding and sweeping. De Gea does none of the above but shot stops. Courtois, Neuer and Llorris are all great keepers on their day but truly don’t measure up to Banks, Shilton or others greats in the 90s and back
There are few keepers in the world that you could really call world class but Gordon Banks was one of them. I put him in the same bracket as Pat Jennings, David Degear, Peter Schmeichel, Edwin Vandesar, Buffon and Shilton Rip Gordon and thank you for our memories
A goalkeeper wearing gloves was a rare event in his era. A shame that so many matches in the 60s and 70s were not filmed. Banks made being a goalkeeper look easy.
An amazing goalkeeper back then, but he said that today he wouldn't even try that position, the ball is too light... I have enormous respect for today's goalies.
PrZemek44 the heavy ball made goal keeping much harder as a finger tip save isn't enough, that's why his save against pele is considered the best ever as he managed to get his hand behind it and save it
Gordon Bank's food poisoning episode on the eve of England's QF clash against Germany started England's snakebitten journey since winning the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
Eber So true the man is a legend! It brings tears to my eyes when i think of the greatest ever keeper back in the glory years of 66 to 70 when he played for England!
terry tuna A lot of keepers did not wear gloves back then except maybe in really wet conditions. But yes Gordon Banks is the best ever goalkeeper. LEGEND! I wish we had a keeper as good as him now and we might stand a chance! Also please Southgate please do not pick Sterling as he clearly is not good enough . The man is a joke of the highest order! He upsets the whole balance of the team and his attitude stinks! He should not be considered for the squad let alone the team!!!!

The ball wasn't heavy at that time. It was still a great save though.
