Since making this video Trevor has shared many beautiful deep sky images made with much less expensive gear than what is shown here - such the RedCat, WO 61, Star Adventurer, ASIAIR, etc. Also, such gear is lighter in weight and takes up less room, but can still give a beginner amazing, very satisfying results. All for less than 2k or even 1.5k.

@@David-Kynaston I see this is happening more and more nowadays. I'm trying to get into this and I keep finding youtube channels cleverly disguised as posting how-tos and tutorials just to push their paid courses or materials. I started out when I was 12 yrs old in astronomy and I am still amazed at how many adults think astrology is the same thing ! I would definitely recommend those who want a better understanding of this stuff to get themselves along to an astronomy club, those guys will jump at the chance of helping beginners. In Germany it's about €2,600 for the telescope and mount alone, let alone accessories and camera. While you can always spend more and go higher, I doubt anyone would consider this a 'beginner setup'. Beginners are trying to figure out how to take images with a €500 - €1,000 set-up, not spend €3,000 right off the bat ;)

I have to give you big kudos for bringing astrophotography in a very approachable way to those who have interest. The "debate" I see in comments you've received about "entry level astrophotography" gives me a bit of a chuckle. It all depends on how one defines astrophotography! Taking a cell phone shot that gives you a tiny setting moon? Holding a cell phone camera lens to an eyepiece of a telescope to get a blurry shot of Jupiter? Or more to the point, taking a sharply focused, larger scale, beautifully colored, high contrast image of M42? To me, the latter is real astrophotography as opposed to just messing around with photos of stuff in the sky. Real astrophotography of deep sky targets takes, at the minimum, a setup like the one you show in the video! Maybe drop the auto-guiding gear and swap a webcam in for the DSLR camera to do planetary imaging, but you cannot escape needing a good mount and great optics. Now a question. I'm looking toward getting back into astrophotography after a long hiatus. What do you think of the William Optics 103 mm APO doublet refractor combined with the EQ35 mount for light weight portability while still being optically excellent and versatile enough to do deep sky and planetary imaging?

"Taking a sharply focused, larger scale, beautifully coloured, high contrast image of M42" -- oh yeah, that's a beginner's first goal, definitely !! Come on, guys ! "Sharply focused" ? I challenge you to explain to me how a bahtinov mask works. Or what coma is.
Astrophotography as a hobby isn't about getting beautiful pictures; we photograph the same subjects all the time, and nicer pictures of these objects have been made by bigger telescopes, in better conditions, by people more experienced than you, possibly taking the pictures from outer space. You won't beat them. Astrophotography as a hobby is all about learning. Learning how you actually go from setting up, to getting a final result. Learning what every little bit does, why it's important, learning how the physics actually make all of this possible. That's what's fun about this (at least for me). And starting out with the bare essentials is just fine.
As an aside, "holding up a cellphone to your eyepiece" is called "afocal photography", and it can be easily and very cheaply refined to take very surprising pictures of the planets. It's definitely a great way to be introduced to astrophotography, since most people already have a cellphone. It also has the advantage that you can do it with almost anything that has an eyepiece -- binoculars, etc...
      Quit being so elitist...

    • @stephenlantz7815
      @stephenlantz7815 6 лет назад +4

      Roberto,
The only reason I wrote my comment was that I took exception to the attacking manner in which several other commenters took Trevor’s video to task just because of differences of opinion about the meaning of “entry level.” If a beginner searches the net for “entry level deep sky astrophotography” and Trevor’s video is one of the hits, why take shots at him if the video is more than a true beginner might want? I can see leaving a polite comment suggesting that the title of the video be amended to make it clear that it is not for beginners. But chiding comments that make it sound like there is some kind of deliberate attempt to mislead potential hobbyists are out of order.
Unfortunately, I fell prey to the very thing I was criticizing: I took shots at other comments and did come off as elitist. Big mistake. I have done astrophotography that ranges from rudimentary techniques like star trail photography and afocal shots to published astrophotos taken with sophisticated equipment. As a teacher, I helped my students to do star trail photography, digital lunar imaging, variable star science projects using digital imaging and many other activities designed to get students jazzed about observing the heavens. I really have championed astronomy at all levels for many years. So, I apologize for sounding elitist. All I really wanted to convey is that I wish people would stop being nasty in their comments.

For starters in astrophotography , set up should be light weight, easy to learn, inexpensive.
Not every one has the convenience of back yard with dark sky. Many of us live in the city, so for DSO's may have to drive an hour or so for dark sky.
Planets are easy, they're bright, short exposure!
I regularly take pictures of solar eclipses , Sun spots, Moon with my $200 Canon SX40 35x zoom camera, hand held. No telescope used.

    • @justatelescope8124
      @justatelescope8124 4 года назад +22

@@DarthQuietus if you plan to do deep sky photography, or even planetary photography, then you will need a proper camera, quality scope, and most importantly, an equatorial mount. A beginner camera could be a second hand DSLR camera. Phones are not capable of picking up low light targets. A beginner telescope should preferably be from a reputable company like Skywatcher or Orion. Getting a 4-6" refractor telescope isn't too expensive and it will also mean you will not need to buy a heavy duty mount to carry it. I will say this though, dont buy any cheap scopes from celestron, they are all complete shit. Any scope under about 700 from celestron is a no no. As a recommended mount, I would say the skywatcher eq5 mount (first or second hand is fine). For a camera, I would recommend the Nikon d5100, which will require a T adapter ring to attach to your scope. Just so you know, this is a setup which isn't exactly VERY entry level, but will be all you really need if you would like to continue doing astrophotography. A setup like this will give results to satisfy you until you feel the need to go further and upgrade. Hope this information helped.

@@danieldorsz1047 That's awesome! Never give up. I have done some really amazing pictures since I wrote this 10 months ago. And i have added a small tracker that only holds 8.8 pounds, but it's great for my camera I have got since then. Look on Facebook for a good camera. I ended up getting a $900 camera for $400 on there. A canon t7i. And finally saved enough for a scope as well. A $400 skywatcher doublet apo.
How I did it.... so I set a goal of what I need for Bill's and a little extra for my little ones college fund every week. Then I do extra work and make extra money on the weekend and just make any "extra" money I can and at the end of the month I put it all together and spend it on a piece of astro gear. I saved for a couple months for the tracker, scope and camera tho. And now I have a nearly complete astro set up. Something very important tho!!! DON'T settle for a cheap mount!!!. I'm kicking myself now for not just saving for another month or two for a better mount. Remember you can put just a camera alone on a big mount not just a scope. But if you buy a small tracker like me, the only thing it will do "well" is astro with a camera and lens. Witch is also a bunch of fun. My scope and camera together are 7.2 pound and is under the limit by over a pound. But with longer focal lengths it will be just ok at tracking at best. But if you do get one make sure you get a tracker that supports guiding. I didn't even know I would want that and now I'm thinking if I had that I could get much better pictures.
Any way just don't give up bud!!! Its worth it!

Wow, quite the set - up you got there... Living out here in Eastern Canada where the weather is really nice during the summer and like you, you have to contend with the pesky sqitos! I use a Manfroto tripod with the 70D Canon and a 70-200 mm f/2.8 Sigma lens to view a few night time objects. I'm not really prepared to remove that element in my camera that prohibits the infra-red spectrum so I will have to deal with the camera as is... Sadly, the set up doesn't hunt out deep sky objects but once I get used to my equipment and learn its capabilities as well as its limits, I will be able to progress further into the hobby.. Im pretty torn between my potential options, I can get a 10" dob that has synscan (goto) which would be absolutly awesome for viewing, less so on mobility, or i can get a Nexstar 8SE which would still be good for viewing but i feel like these are cheap versions of those types of scopes and have heard of fogging and dew issues, or i can get a celestron VX 8N which comes with a motorised EQ mount but the viewing is meh compared to the other two options. Keep in mind this is all just me assuming things based off of what ive read up haha

You did say some of the equipment was *used*, like the mount, which is a substantial portion of the budget, if not the MAJOR portion of the budget. You use an older camera (DSLR), a relatively inexpensive guide scope (and guide cameras can be had NEW for ~$100 US. Sure it's a beginner setup. Using these elements, one could start astrophotography using even a CT-80 refractor on that decent mount. Nice video. Touches on all the main points. I'm building my system today. I'm using gell cells for power (deep cycle) and have yet to decide on a dew removal system. Thanks for your videos. I find them well produced and edited and informative. Best to you.

Hi Trevor. I would like to thank you for your great video channel on RUclips! I started with Astrophotography to month ago and your videos are very helpful to me. The consideration of which telescope and which mount you buy can really overstrain. But I think that no matter what decision you make, you even meet one and start with this beautiful hobby. I focused on a good mount and then opted for the Skywatcher HEQ5 with the 200/1000 Newton from Skywatcher. For an APO the budget was too small ... but it will come sometime. My DSLR is a Nikon D5300 which is absolutely fine to start with this hobby. I can only advise everyone not to give up immediately if it doesn´t work because if you have taken the first shoot of a galaxy, the moon or planets, it really blows you off.

I appreciate all the info and knowledge given on this channel and it has helped me very much but I agree with many others that this is not a beginners Astrophotography set up. Very few people can begin with an APO scope and an EQ 5 mount let alone a guide scope. The shown rig in my opinion is a low Intermediate set up. A beginner Astrophotography rig could be on the low end as little as say a Celestron Travel scope on a ALT/AZT go to mount with a cheap DSLR and no guiding. I have cobbled together an HEQ5 mount, Startravel 120 ACRO, ebay special guide scope and the cheapest zwo guide camera I could find for about £650 ($7-800)? I consider my rig high end beginner?

Love your videos, but not everyone can afford such setup, here is an example begginer setup :
    1. i would start with newton 150/750 , weight 5kg , cost 200 $ , for example bresser messier 150/750
    2. The most expansive part of setup ,a mount, eqm-35 skywatcher - 817,09 $, 10 kg load capacity
    3. Coma corrector 100$
    4. ZWO ASI 120MC-S color or monochromatic 160 $
Summary, total cost is 1277,1 $ , which is still alot, but yeh, cheap setups for deep sky astrophoto doesn't exist

    Im confused.
Ive bought an EQ6-R Pro and a second hand sky watcher CF 10" Newt, it has a ASI 1600 MM Astro Camera with 7 position filter wheel plus a 70mm guide scope, ASI 290MM Minni Guiding camera, laptop to come later.
Software wise i understand ASCOM, PHD2, APT, Stellarium ect (practicing using these in simulator mode) but when it comes to the electric side of things and what leads i need to plug into what device confuses me.
My primary location would be in my back yard (Like you, so mains power) and ive bought a 12V 100Ah Lithium Iron Battery LiFePO4 for dark sky locations.
I have watched so many setup videos but people just say they use this they use that, dont use a power hub to run your main camera off ect ect.
Sky watcher says use 12V but then majority of people i talked to or read about stating i should be running at 13.1V up to 13.8.
Could you do a video, on powering a basic scope setup, mount, cameras, laptop what you need to connect this gear via mains and dealing with of grid power via battery?

Wouldn't a 714mm Focal length be considerably higher on a crop sensor? Canon crop sensors apply a factor of 1.6x to the focal length of a lens, or telescope in this case. Is that something to consider when using it? Or really just a nice little bonus to the magnification of the scope?

Really enjoying your videos, the soundtracks and your dog :-) Returning to asltrophotograpy after 25 years away and boy have things changed! My rig is pretty similar to yours. NEQ6 mount, TS ED80 f7 with corrector, asi120mc-S auto guider. I've been thinking a lot about imaging cameras and considering the pros and cons of CCD vs modified DSLR. I've been using my wife's un-modified DSLR for now, but she would kill me if I did anything to it :-). So here is the problem. Do I spend cash on a second hand EOS + the modification process or hold out for a CCD. Any recommendations?

I'm looking to buy my first telescope + mount. I'm currently running a Star Adventurer 2i tracker without guiding and I'm really confused if I should get auto-guiding for it or simply switch to a telescope + better mount. I do have a ton of lenses from ultrawide to 500mm f/8 for my mirrorless camera. Can you shed some light please? My budget is around 1000$, give or take 100-200$. I don't need GoTo at the moment as I can get it later on as my main use will be DSO that show up in norther hemisphere in the NW to SE side of the sky and a part of the south ( this is my balcony view ). Help please! I've seen SkyWatcher 203/1000 with NEQ5 but I'm worried about weight limit as it has around a 10kg limit and only the counterweights have 10kg and the telescope has around 10kg too + my camera 600gr. Not sure why are they selling it like that since I can't use it properly if the weight is an issue in that configuration. And another question is, how big of "a must have" is the GoTo? Can I do it without for a few months or I just save some money and get it together with GoTo included in the pack.
