- For me this is the true spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate.
It's the game I never knew I had been waiting for! I'm so glad I am playing it now!!!
What a masterpiece by Owlcat Games - please show them some love on the brand new kickstarter for the second game in the series - it is running right now and you guys can check that out here:

How have I never known about this game!!? when did it even come out?! Thanks for the video, checking this game out ASAP
Get itttt!! So good!!
Good game, some problems I had just walking into it with no knowledge or pre-researching thoughts: You WILL find yourself looking up character builds, googling why you aren't hitting anything/getting completely decimated, totally wrecking your own first kingdom finding out why you shouldn't ignore "problem" cards, and spending about an equal amount of time searching for cool custom portraits to chop up on the interbutts, as actually playing the game.
exactly, ive been googling why im not hitting anything -lol
Your perfect and emotion filled review completely sold me in this game and you have a really pleasant voice to listen to. Subscribed. Thanks for the review
Aww thanks so much!! I appreciate the kind words!!
Damn! The character creation alone makes me excited to try this game.
This game is mesmerizing, even the kingdow management can be likable if played on easy mode.
The game rules are obtuse, yes, but as you play and research the game you also learn the rules for pen and paper, so if you ever want to try that out you already have a good starting point. You could even buy the latest Pathfinder rulebook and use it for reference in your Kingmaker (or soon to release Wrath of the Righteous sequel) just going to the index on rear pages, then to read straight from the tabletop horse's mouth how the game is intended to work (especially if you enable Turn Based mode). If the kingdom management is too annoying you can at its lowest difficulty setting also disable game over from kingdom unrest, while still playing the rest of the game at challenging or pen and paper similar difficulty.
The only game I played before I played Pathfinder: Kingmaker was DOS2. I fell in love with this game and have almost put 200 hours in and I haven’t even beat it yet. Although my first impressions are from the definitive addition, I heard it had a pretty rocky launch.
Agreed. Launch didn't go so well apparently. I also played the definitive edition!!
@@HazVsRPG did you choose live combat as opposed to turn based?
there is a turn based mod, which made this game for me great, much better then real time combat.
If there is a turn based mod for this, I think I would be all in on buying this game.
watch some modshowcases about the turnbased mod, its pretty new and its awsome.
i wouldnt play kingmaker anymore if it wasnt for this mod, real time is just to hard for me xd.
This is exactly why I haven't bought it up until now as I didn't know about the turn based mod. Real time doesn't really interest me.
The game is getting a definitive edition on the 18/8/20 adding turn based combat to the game instead of using a mod.
www.deepsilver.com/en/pathfinder-kingmaker-definitive-edition-coming-to-consoles/.
Note I'm assuming the pc update happens at the same time as the console release.
Same here. This mod is absolutely must have. Without it i wouldn't play this.
Haz, I have heard you mention this game many times in your stream and yet I had not explored or given it a thought to purchase. Too many other ones to try I thought. This all changed two days ago when I decided to watch this review you made. You haven't steered me wrong yet so I purchased it... and started playing.... and it's everything I have been looking for to fill my D&D, Baldur's Gate, nostalgia driven, gaming emptiness I have had for quite a while! I'm loving this, the complexity, the storybook, the character interactions; why hadn't I listened sooner?!? Please don't give me the 999 year ban....
Dude, I'm really happy you found it. I did the same thing, it's very truly a Baldurs Gate set in today's standards, also amazingly, such a small team delivered the game!! Looking forward to hearing about your playthrough!!
Oh! Make sure you make your kingdom invincible in the options!! Trust me on this, even being very diligent it is possible to potentially end up in a scenario where you are unable to save your kingdom no matter what your choices are!
what do you feel is the best modern crpg? there are so many recent ones that I am conflicted..
Pathfinder Kingmaker for me!! Although I am yet to play Pillars of Eternity 2!
Thank you for the in-depth video. Subscribed! This video inspired me to take the plunge on Pathfinder from Humble Bundle's monthly special.
Hey thank you for the kind words!! I appreciate them a lot!!
The background music is about three times louder than it needs to be.
I was on the fence for getting this game after playing DOS2 but you convinced me! Thank you!
I hope you enjoy it!!
I DMed this set of adventures converting it to AD&D 2nd ed. I really liked the theme of building a kingdom. It might be fun to give it a go on the other end as a player. Thanks for the review HazVsRPG. I'm sold.
I would be interested in seeing what you think coming from a tabletop bg, as I played through the game there were a few folks that came through saying they loved it, however there was also a few that said that they didn't capture the feel of tabletop, which i definitely understand but also realize that from a dev perspective that is almost entirely impossible to achieve!
Easily one of the best RPG's in a decade. Owl Cat fixed most all the bugs if not all...it's a great game now.
It really is a phenomenal game!!
One of the best RPGs since Baldur's Gate series
Agree 100%!!!
I have no idea if anyone would reply, but would anyone recommend this for someone who loves KOTOR 1& 2, and the Dragon Age series? This game reminds me of them.
Different, but similar! I hope you have given it a try!!
So this is obviously an older video by now, I don't suppose you have your Twitch playthrough of this game somewhere? I looked for it on RUclips and couldn't find it, or did I miss it somewhere?
I actually do dude, it's stored on my twitch channel under hilights, I have the whole playthrough, or at least 95% of it haha, I accidentally deleted one part of it...
@@HazVsRPG Found It! Wow, I've never seen such a large library of Twitch VODs actually on the Twitch site. Happy as hell to have a fun platlythrough to watch, but why Twitch Vods? They easily have the most garbage UI and bit rate for VODs that I've ever seen. Most people upload all that stuff to RUclips. Just curious.
Just finished it! Great game! Loved your beard ❤
Hey thank you!!!
I agree that there are great aspects to this game and the overall design philosophy is spot on. However its riddled with bugs and balance issues. Watch the first few seconds of the video closely and see what happens when his character draws her sword. Her bottom hand is holding air. This animation is broken and you see it in the first few seconds of gameplay. Maybe you're thinking, "i hate two handers, I'll be a necromancer." Enjoy watching your skeletons who are armed with swords rush at your opponents and hammer them with their fists. These are just some of the many bugs left unaddressed and unfixed even as the team launches a kickstarter for their new game. They don't want to fix their current game but they definitely do want money for the next.
These are very minor visual problems, I admit I've seen quite a few of those I agree. But they don't impact the games performance and are really easy to overlook. Also again, remember this is owlcat first game ever. Do you remember what the witcher 1 played like? Divine divinity? These 'first games' were buggy and broken even now they still are, every developer has to start somewhere and I think overall owlcat has done so well!!
Hell i wish the only bugs were visual. To this day there is still some feats that don't work as they should or even worse, don't work at all (Steel soul for example). Kingdom management needs more polish and also there is a bug that freezes the bp counter on the top. The worse part is that behind all this issues lies a great game, a game owlcat should be fixing instead of jumping to the next one.
Is it worth it now still with the sequel being better in every way from what i hear?
Im on std ps4, love turnbased, like rtwp.
From what I heard, its not worth to get on PS4 or PS5 a lot of bugs need to be ironed out! AVOID!
Great. Now I'm addicted. This game has literally everything I love about rpgs, plus more. This is what I thought Pillars of Eternity was going to be.
Literally can't stop playing. So glad they added the turn based mode as an official feature.
Your description was spot on and you covered most every aspect. This is the best game I have played ever {40 years of gaming). The game is not perfect. It requires allot of reading to immerse yourself in the world (more voice acting would be appreciated), there are balance issues and with all the choices, it is easy to make a wrong choice that bites you in the ass later on. Small potatoes for the hundred hours of pure gaming bliss. Please play this game. Your life will be better for it.
Yeah this game really is something else!! I absolutely love it!!
Would you say it's better then divinity original sin 2?
A truly fantastic review. Thanks for the really great and informative presentation. Subscribing. You really are good at this.
Hey thank you so much for the very kind words! I'm trying my best!!!
21:9 ultrawide support?
Not sure about that actually!!
I'm new to this genre and have ordered pillars of eternity 1 on the ps4, can anyone recommend pathfinder kingmaker to me after playing (and hopefully completing) pillars of eternity? Thankin' you.
Pathfinder Kingmaker is an easier to understand experience IMO than Pillars of Eternity. Everything is more accessible and described in detail if you are ever confused!
@@HazVsRPG That's fantastic thanks fella I will buy pathfinder soon.
Get divinity 2
Having a rough time deciding. Should I buy this or Baldur's Gate 1 first?
If you are okay with old school graphics, play BG1 - then move to Kingmaker!
HazVsRPG noice! Your videos have been steering me correctly for months. Thanks!
I'm a big fan of pillers of eternity 1/2 and divinity original sin 1/2 should i buy pathfinder Kingmaker
Short answer? Yes!!!!
I still have to get through Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2 first lol. I'll try this after, absolutely loved Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2.
I would put it first before divinity!! It won't spoil anything because they are very different games, but, this is definitely my favorite!!
i found pillars 1 and 2 really weak story wise
@@mihai000000 I have heard this actually, a few people have stopped in to the stream and said as much!
@@HazVsRPG I thoroughly enjoyed the story told in POE 1 & 2. POE 1 was quite grounded when it came to the ending, I will say though POE 2 compared to 1 had a bit of a dragon age inquisition problem, solid story, but not enough of it, spread over too much time.
@@guyincognito566 I'm looking forward to it so much, after playing through pathfinder Kingmaker I'm stoked to play more!!!
Wish this was on PS4!
Btw, would you recommend Divinity 2?
Pathfinder kingmaker was announced for console late last year. It should be here later this year 😁
@@brenzmilne Noice! I'll hold out for it! It looks epic!
No you wont. I suggest don't waste your money buying it unless you are a big fan of pathfinder, the game is still ridden with bugs and kingdom management is tedious at best.
I'm not sure about Pathfinder, but Divinity 1 and 2 are modern gems. GET THEM BOTH! They're brilliant!
I wanted to buy it too for PS4, but learned that the game is very unstable, full of bugs (some of them game breaking), save file corruption, horrible frame drops, the game is almost unplayable.
Thanks for the review video! Although from what you are saying, it's just *the* perfect game, which of course may seem biased and unbalanced. Any warning, issues (on purpose or not) that could disappoint of discourage?
The town building could be improved, and there are some issues with learning and balancing the progress with your advisors and keeping your kingdom from collapse. There are some things which are not made very clear, but these are quite minor things. I'm really trying to dig deep for problems because I never really had any! I love the game!!
@@HazVsRPG I feel like the story companions could be slightly more dynamic when it comes to your character choice but even that is pretty nitpicky.
I can't wait to get this game on console, and you have sold me on this with your review! Do you or have you played PF tabletop, if so is it very much like that? thanks :)
As I played through it, I did have quite a few people come through and say just how similar it was to the actual tabletop campaign! I myself haven't tried it but passing on that info for you!!
So it sounds like this game gives you the resources you need to learn it. Would this be a good CRPG to get into if you've never played one?
I think its a good window into it for sure. CRPG can be really overwhelming, but at least there is a lot of info for you on hand if you get confused! For anything else feel free to drop a question here or jump into the stream and ask there!
@@HazVsRPG Oh cool thanks bunches
Yeah, I think you're right!
I appreciate your honesty. Great video.
Are you planning to review the definitive edition? Either way, excellent review. I just bought my copy thanks to you.
Yes I am! For sure, as well as Wrath of the Righteous!
@@HazVsRPG perfect!!!
Great video! I bought this game after finishing up POE.
August 18th on consoles 😁 so excited iv been waiting to try it
Hope you have had luck with this bug fest of a game.
@@SeventhheavenDK actually my biggest complaint has been the load times. Most of the launch bugs have been fixed it seems. Cant really blame them tho, the pathfinder system has so much going on when it comes to combat
is this on ps4
Not yet, Owlcat have mentioned that it maybe later this year 😁
wyatt goodman august 18th for switch, ps4 and Xbox one 💪🏻 and hopefully the second game will come to console has well but we have to cross our fingers for that because is still I Kickstarter as of this comment anyway.
Eddie Hall look-a-like
Except I'm way bigger...... Like 4-5 times his size..... 😂
There is a lot of love in the game, but they added a lot which really detracts from the game. They have timers on quests where if you fail... you fail at the entire game. They have an entire kingdom management system which is confusing and detracts from the game -- D&D is about dungeons and adventuring while the entire kingdom system totally detracts from it. The "party" system also sucks. You are virtually forced to play with their NPCs in your party since if you make up your own characters, the game makes it nearly impossible to recruit them unless you do insanely specific things on the forums -- i.e. don't level up since by 2nd-level you can't afford them. Your own characters are 25-point buy vs. 27+ for the NPCs.
Well the actual module this is based off of, pathfinder Kingmaker is about kingdom management, and is even more in depth. From people who have played the campaign tabletop, they said its actually a streamlined version of the tabletop version, just to shed some light on the reason why it's there. The timers as a first time player I felt were very lenient, I had near unlimited amounts of time to accomplish searching the entire map and Completing nearly every single quest the game has to offer on my very first playthrough, and my ocd and anxiety about timed quests and not missing Loot is pretty high!! I can't speak to the create your own party aspect though because I never tried! Interesting, I might try to investigate that, thanks for the heads up!!
@@GAEULsbn I definitely remember that. I missed the outrage and I'm so glad I waited to experience the game as it is now, truly I am!!
@@GAEULsbn I never played the game until about five months ago. I immediately put the Kingdom management to Easy as soon as I started reading about it and trying to figure it out. It shouldn't be in a D&D game nor should any game-ending mechanic. In an actual D&D game, if you failed to complete the main quest... you go do something else. In PFKM, if you fail... the game ends. No reason for this to be in there. The entire kingdom management was just filler... padding out a game by making you waste huge amounts of time on some other game without even knowing the rules.
@@BW022 I don't understand these complaints. It's not D&D. It's an adaptation of Pathfinder Kingmaker which has kingdom management. That's what they promised on Kickstarter and people funded it, so clearly they wanted it. If you don't like it, you can just set it to Auto in the difficulty screen and never deal with it. Buying a game about kingdom management then complaining about it seems silly. What were you expecting?
@@michaeltorresii5248 . Totally, agree with this, the only part that I agree with the other guy, is that for a game that you are destined to spend hundreds of times, there shouldn't be a game over trigger like the one they have with kingdom management.
It has a lot of things explained but I still find myself lost at some stuff that I have to google xD
Happy to help if you need some! I have a begginer guide which explains some basic stuff at character create. I'm thinking about doing some more as well!
@@HazVsRPG thanks, dont worry most of the times are things like "does this spell/attack synergize with this feat? Is this for range too? Does this equipment affect this attack?" And so on that I can just find in the rules or forums. I still think that I'm just blind sometimes xD
The true Pathfinder experience. If you don't have 30 Tabs open while building your character are you even building a character?
Don't take it the wrong way, but if you constantly sound amazed it sounds really weird. Instead of emphasizing important points it just becomes hard to follow. Great content other then that!
@@azzazel225 nah it was positive, actually better than other reviews
I’m generally unfamiliar with this channel but I would enjoy this fellow taking a crack at pillars of eternity. I don’t mean to criticize in a malicious way but I figure pillars would be the spiritual successor to baulders gate. As it is made by a lot of the baulders people & pathfinder is an actual I’m not sure I would say sequel but a member of the family of d&d games that baulders, icewind dale, neverwinter, planescape torment & temple of elemental evil belong to. It’s the authentic real deal.
I played Pillars for about 40 hours or so, since making this video :) The reason i think Pillars is not quite a spiritual successor is because despite it looking similar, the games skeleton is not D&D its its own made up thing (which i know is *really* close to D&D its still not quite the same) I think its a really important part of what makes Baldurs Gate what it is. I think Pillars is great btw i want to finish it at some point!!
That’s a good point
Ha so do I, ironically however I figure I will do pathfinder first
Well you have converted me Sir. 👍
I enjoy your voice very much. You should do voice work!!
Wow, thank you haha. It seems to be a love hate thing, some people have said that they enjoy it, others have a problem with it. Big time lol
im going to play it today
Yes!!!
Ive been looking for it on ps4. Os ot on ps4 yet?
Later this year I've heard. Gamecross channel announced late last year
@@brenzmilne thanks
I'm a fan of Baldur's Gate, Planscape Torment, Icewind Dale, Never Winter Night, Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity, In fact i had played every game in this kind (Realtime with pause) And its path of my life.
Been so disappoint with BG3 gameplay trailer is announced.
Its becomes Turn-base thats not the game i looking for anymore.
Pathfinder looks closer Baldur's Gate-ish than Baldur's Gate 3.
Pathfinder and owlcat are amazing, you really must try it!!!!
The reason bg3 is turn based is because that is the way DnD is played! The only reason crpg had this real time with pause is because they couldn’t support turn based in the past
@@SunsetofMana with 15 years as a game dev under my belt, This excuse needs to be swept away. Turn based is a much easier system to work on, and d&d has always been turn based. Real-time with pause made it more action oriented, it brought about its own set of problems combining it with d&d mechanics trust me it had nothing to do whatsoever with not being able to 'support' it.
@@HazVsRPG Exactly if anything, turn based is easier to implement.
If this really is this much like BG, they should have gotten the rights to BG 3. BG3 should have been about the fans, and what they want, not some greedy marketing trick by D&D and Larian :(
I agree with that!
A little bit late to the party. But hey.... Your welcome
Haaaaaated this game and bought poe instead. Best choice ever
I'm thinking to buy this as Steam has 60% off right now. But i don't know really. I prefer turn based combat. I spent a lot of time with Divinity 2. By far from what i seen this game is more beautiful than POE2. But i still dont know. The biggest drawback is they don't have turn based combat. Hmmm
There is a mid to install which can make it turn based just for people like yourself 😁 I've heard it is very good also, makes it feel like it's completely native to the game rather than some hacky thing.
@@HazVsRPG are you playing with the mod? the mod will disable achievement right?
Took me like 3 months to get out of the character creator lol
It's 4th day I am still in character creation no joke for real lol .
This is the way!
@@HazVsRPG indeed
Its a shame this developer isn't doing the next Baldurs Gate.
Agreed.
Yeah.....how much did you get for making this vid? I checked your playlists....no Pathfinder: Kingmaker playthrough. True spiritual successor my arse.
I spent nearly 300 hours playing through it on my twitch channel 😂 I didn't get paid a cent, I wanted to make something that explained this stuff because, for weeks I had new players coming through asking beginner questions and thought this would help.
It runs so badly for me... 30-50 fps just kills my enjoyment slowly for this game. I hope Wrath of the Righteous will be better optimized.
Really?! Wow I haven't had any performance issues with the game at all, one thing I can say is to lower the ssao in graphics, that is a massive hog, give that a try if you haven't already. That single handily change the performance for me to almost constant 60+fps
lots of small issues killed this game for me. Bad characters, and a few nuances. For example, if you have two characters proficient in a specific skill check, you still only get 1 shot at any lock or history/nature check before the option to investigate becomes locked off, which led me to save whoring to not feel cheated on opportunities to experience content locked behind these skill checks.
Locks are not like that anymore, you can continuously check the lock until there is noone left with any trickery skill, at which point you'll have to return later after a level up, however one off chances in conversation are definitely like that. I mean, in a tabletop rpg you don't get to continuously make checks against something like a conversation with everyone in the party, so I guess that's where that came from.
In saying that though, I still feel the same haha, I want to experience all the content!! And it does bother me that I can't! I want all the Loot!!
@@HazVsRPG Even in a table game, I feel like two characters should be able to make a check at the same time. If both of my characters would be able to make the check, i wouldn't feel cheated when i didn't win the roll.
Unfortunately with all that beautiful and fluffy UI this game has the worst balancing of any RPG I've ever played. If you like reloading a lot due to encounters that you couldn't possibly have prepared for from the first go then go ahead. I tried to like the game but the horrible balancing, stupid forced time limits that can make you fail quests and event he whole game.
Also, this review is just fangirling and gushing.
As a first time player to Pathfinder, I didn't experience any of the difficulties you speak of, and found the time limits excessively massive - almost to the point of 'why is the time limit so insanely long?'
I accept that your (and maybe many others) experience is different than mine though, perhaps you can accept that mine is just different from yours.
@@HazVsRPG Fair enough
No, this is a horrible game. Even if people ignire the infinite of game breaking bugs that some are still present now, tge game designed are stupid. 1st the game is poorly pacing and too long, evidence is only very few able to complete the best ending when check the steam archievement. Noone want to replay this mess. 2nd, the game is poorly balanced as many of D&D gm had said, and even compared the game as a gm throwning a temper tantrum by buffing every encounter. 3rd the game is made by a bunch of fan boy, not a game designer, expecting your player to research and read the D&D monster manual or build is BS. I buy the game, NOT pathfinder D&D, it is the game job to present me with the info before i encounter a deadly situation, not my job to read Monster Manual. I laugh when s.o here said should let these moron to make BG 3, sure, if you want to destroy a franchise. These idiot even exolict said : save and load every encounter to help...
Sounds like you need to git gud kekw
why do people that play this game choose portraits that look nothing like their avatar? 3rd video today where ive seen this. is this a D&D superstition thing or are you people specifically trying to trigger all the OCD people in the world?
There was no portrait to match what I wanted to create in the game, there's only a handful of portraits, when there are literally hundreds of combinations to make in character create, seems quite straight forward tbh?
@@HazVsRPG found this out when i bought it today.
Apparently, there's a big portrait pack mod out there????
as i said couple of times, i really wished owlcat was making bg3 instead larian ... i just dont trust larian they will make a decent game. the current bg3 gameplay looks zero, like absolutely nothing bg, bg2 or forgotten realms like .. its way too colorful and too clean ... it looks like dos3 instead of bg3 ...
yeah buddy I'm disappointed pretty excited earlier idk why they maked it turned based it took the fun out if it ( at least for me) it looked like they copied dos2 with new changes really disappointed...

HELL NO! you want BG 3 to be a riddled mess? Im not very fond of Larian myself either but at least their games have high standards of quality. Never in all my years playing RPG's have i found a game as broken as pathfinder, and i played Alpha protocol to the end, let that sink in...
What really hurts is that beyond all the bugs, there is a very good game.
@@zzxp1 they fixed almost _all_ of the bugs months ago .. the game is an absolute perfect state right now ...bugs can be eliminated. atmosphere, color palets, world immersion cannot. and larian's bg3 looks like absolute dogshit right now. that is not bg3. pathfinder: kingmaker looks more like bg3 then larian's bg3 ever will.
@@xabun Perfect state my ass, the feat steel soul is bugged and it won't do anything, the bp counter sometimes freezes at the top of kingdom management, some class descriptions are wrong or don't show accuarate information, memory leaks because of the bloated size of save files, visual erros, and friking octavia using acid splash evey time even if i didn't order her to do it. And let me remind you that im not a veteran of pathfinder and just stumbled uppon this on my first playthrough just at the second chapter after the many patches to the game.
