Musashi actually didn’t use two katana, he used a katana and a wakizashi, and he didn’t use them as seen here. Historically, he used both of them at the same time. The shorter wakizashi allows the wielder to perform secondary strikes around the longer katana. ...And he definitely wouldn’t do that silly cross-guard thing. If this were a real fight, Tanaka would’ve gotten control over BOTH of Musashi’s swords and could easily kill him in a myriad of ways.

In all honesty, Musashi would probably have been the one to use that underhanded tactic with the dirt. It was his pragmatism and versatility, beyond ridiculous honour, which made him such a formidable warrior and strategist.

There are a lot of Japanese actors out there but Sanada is so fitting for this role. Also the guy from the last samurai who is also great in his acting.
Fantastic! Some of the fighting could use a bit more dynamic fluidity, but the acting, wardrobe, and cinematography are absolutely masterful! Kurosawa would be proud. The pre-sword draw dodge Sanada-san does, is a bit far quarter. The camera angle should be more closer to one man in order to hide the distance. Another thing that is effective but rarely utilized in jidai-geki is using the non-sharp side of the blade more with the back of the forearm, hand, knee, or underfoot. Musashi was unconventional and investigated all moves thoroughly, and that's why he was the best. Sanada-san is such a perfect fit! More weather-worn and realistic than other iterations of the character. I'm a huge fan of Clavell and can't wait to watch this.

But holy heck, Hiroyuki Sanada is precisely how I pictured Musashi in Eiji Yoshikawa's fantastic book. Messy, unkempt, unwashed, with no discernable technique other than brute force, a stark contrast to the more polished Ronin and Samurai who emphasized finesse and swiftness. Musashi, by all accounts, was a swing-for-swing brawler. Hence, it was raw instinct that drew two swords during his infamous rummage with a couple of bitter devotees of the Yoshioka School.
Hiroyuki Sanada is the perfect actor for Musashi. WE SHOULD HAVE ANOTHER MUSASHI MOVIE LIKE THAT OLD ONE WITH HIROYUKI SANADA AS AN ELDER MUSASHI ON REIGANDO REMEMBERING HIS STORY BEFORE HE DIES.

Man, Musashi is so cool, and I know this is choreography, but it gives us an idea why the two heavens as one, Musashis sword style, is so devastating, you got, not only two swords, but two shields as well, also, legend says his secret technique was just throwing the short sword at his opponent. This would do two things: actually hurt them, or distract them so you can hit them with your long sword.
The issues I have with this scene are 1- the old guy covering the kids eyes, it would have been an important sight to see such an honourable seppuku; and 2- you don't block katana edge-to-edge like that, you either dodge, or use the flat of the blade or the back to redirect, edge-to-edge is just asking to chip your blade Musashi did change the rules by stealing the other guys wakizashi, so that's accurate
It may not have been taught in school that way, but in a real-steel fight to the death where every second is a new opportunity to live or die, you do what you have to, to survive. A blade with a little chip here and there is still sharp enough to kill someone, and the sword can be repaired or replaced.

Man, Musashi is so cool, and I know this is choreography, but it gives us an idea why the two heavens as one, Musashis sword style, is so devastating, you got, not only two swords, but two shields as well, also, legend says his secret technique was just throwing the short sword at his opponent. This would do two things: actually hurt them, or distract them so you can hit them with your long sword.

The issues I have with this scene are 1- the old guy covering the kids eyes, it would have been an important sight to see such an honourable seppuku; and 2- you don't block katana edge-to-edge like that, you either dodge, or use the flat of the blade or the back to redirect, edge-to-edge is just asking to chip your blade
Musashi did change the rules by stealing the other guys wakizashi, so that's accurate

It may not have been taught in school that way, but in a real-steel fight to the death where every second is a new opportunity to live or die, you do what you have to, to survive. A blade with a little chip here and there is still sharp enough to kill someone, and the sword can be repaired or replaced.
