Looks like a single string delta might be a good starting point and then move up to the 2 string sport kites. May good winds blow your way.
I wouldn't call two-line kites "moving up!" They are totally different, and although I have some two-line kites I find them boring (maybe because I'm not good at flying them.) You can fly single line kites all day, but the two-line ones I get bored with after half an hour at most. If you like the idea of the two-liners, buy one first, as single line ones will not teach you anything about them. Have fun, anyway!
You could be right, I fly remote control airplanes and thought kite flying might be a good alternative on windy days. The 1st video on my youtube search was a 2 line kite doing stunts and it got my interest. My only experience with a one line kite was as a kid with a dime store basic/cheap kite. What do you see as the pros and enjoyments of a one string type?
It doesn't appeal to everyone, naturally, but to a lot of us, once you get a kite or two in the air, you forget all your problems and enjoy the miracle of flight while still anchored to the ground. It's hard to explain, but if the bug bites then it's hard to stop. Most people are content with hand-flying one kite, which is great, but I like to "paint the sky" with kites for the entertainment of anyone who cares to view them.
There certainly are rules but they don't stop you from having fun. 1. Do not fly kites near power lines or over roadways. 2. Do not fly kites near other kite flyers or people if you have cutting line such as manja or Kevlar 3. Do not fly kites to annoy people, i.e near sunbathers or buzz people with a stunt kites. 4. Do not fly kites near air ports or in prohibited air space. 5. Keep your kite below the legal limit which is from 100 - 120 metres (328 - 400 ft) above ground level in most countries Otherwise have fun.

Not becoming angry, thinking you made this video being sarcastic. As my kids got really pissed off coz dad asked them to watch Kite 101 before practical....😉
You are right, I was being sarcastic. I did it because of a friend who always makes so many rules about how he flies his kites, and uses 500lb lines and big anchors to tie down quite small kites.
I think that the main rule of kite flying is to keep it away from electricity lines - and, if you’ve built a stunt kite, keep it away from people’s heads!
Fighting kite hir is common i remember when i was 10-15 yrs old we put powdered florescent and sticky glue we put it on our strings and we hunt other kite 😂
Apart from not endangering, frightening or annoying other people, there are in fact a few rules beyond the usual "avoid power lines and lightning" stuff. First, get to know what kind of kite flies in which wind conditions. People try to fly very light kites in high wind and then complain that it's "junk" because it spins. No, it just needs a long tail in strong breeze. They also try to fly a heavy parafoil in a light breeze and complain that it won't go up. No, that kite needs a good steady breeze, and a big delta would work better. Second, know when a kite can be dangerous. I have a larger stunt parafoil kite that can exert tremendous pull in a sudden strong gust. It can injure me if it knocks me down; it can injure a bystander if I lose control of it near the ground. I have a smaller stunt parafoil that exerts only minimal pull even in strong gusts. That's the one to fly on a crowded beach. And third, know what weight of line each kite needs. If you just buy a cheapie kite, you probably don't care much...unless you become sentimentally attached to a certain kite after flying it for years. If it's a more expensive kite, you really don't want to see the line break and the kite end up in a tree. Fourth, buy some extra kites, I recommend small single-line parafoils, to have ready in case a kid comes up to you fascinated. Your opening line is, "Do *you* like to fly kites? Really? You're not just saying that? Do *you* want to fly one right now?"
Dan, this video was made to poke fun at a friend who takes everything to do with kite-flying far too seriously. Yes, there are lots of things to take into consideration (many of which I've covered in my 1,393 kite videos). But in years of flying hundreds of different kites over thousands of hours, I've found it all just boils down to "Be safe, have fun!" Anything else is detail, and that could go on for ever.
Not at all, Dan - all the points you made are valid, but as I said, it was just a fun video, not serious at all. I hope you have a lot of fun with your flying.
You'll find other videos on my channel to help with that. See: ruclips.net/p/PL4Dq7dMNMUTWAdatlaefCUJwTlBjWpmj9 . This one you've just watched was made as a joke, because a guy I know thinks there are rules for everything and he takes it too seriously.
@@JimNicholls 😄😄😄😄 ... The jokes on you. It turned out, at least to me, to be a very relaxing and pleasant video to watch. Bet there are others who think so too. You did good.
I shoud make you a suggestion: all you need is a drone, a 1000 dollars or less, fly it above to the sky (caution!), the kite is in the second positon on a string, and author is on the ground. Film it!
I don't know if many of them will fly well as a single-line kite. I have never tried to do it, but the important thing would be to make sure that when you join the two lines together (or replace them with new ones), that the lengths are exactly the same, otherwise the kite will be permanently unbalanced.
2 Important rules of kite flying are: Stay far away from roads and dangerous electric power lines!! Those should have been in the video. Many beginners don't know this! D:
The video was made as a joke, not a serious safety code. It said to be safe, and people should know what that means, but maybe sometime I'll do a proper safety one.
That's just common sense and comes under the heading of keeping safe. This video was made as a joke against people who try to make too many rules about kite-flying (and other things) and the most important thing is still to have fun.
This video was made as a joke, to make fun of people I know who try to invent all kinds of "rules" about kite-flying which are totally unnecessary and take all the fun out of it. I have made another 1,588 videos, in many of which I give hints on flying - see, for example, this one, and there are lots of others: ruclips.net/video/f2fP9G7bsUE/видео.html .
Anyone who understands the physics of kite-flying would have to be a real genius. We are at the mercy of the wind, which is ever-changing, and the effects it has on a kite are many - trying to calculate all of them would need a super-computer. Best to just enjoy it and not worry too much about rules or physics, although you can learn a bit with experience.
Jim Nicholls 🙄 lol. I wasn’t the only one at the kite festival not to get it up. Though I discovered that when it’s flying like a kamikaze I have to give it more string.
Well, back in the old days there were people who liked to build man-carrying kites, and some of them were very useful, especially in the First World War when they lifted observers to see what the enemy were doing (a dangerous job, I think, as they probably got shot at as well as the danger of just being up there!)
BitBeat I thought that part of the fun? Jim Nicholls Kites in the First World War is cool, but it feels a bit like a regression- they were flying observers in hot-air balloons during the Civil War.
Roses are red What you've said is true But only 'cause Mom Was desperate too To find a new way To fly a kite that was old But we both got tricked And were scammed with what we were told.
@@gracebarnes8520 There are over 1,600 more videos on this channel, many of which might help your problem. This is just one of many that try to give advice: ruclips.net/video/f2fP9G7bsUE/видео.html . *DO NOT FLY A KITE IN A HURRICANE.*
*{I plan on FOLLOWING this advice over the NEXT FEW DAYS...😝}*
Dude I just flew one in hurricane Barry 😦
AND...eleven months later, HURRICANE DORIAN _GAY_ {MY official name for it 😊} just passed by _"my neck of the woods"._
I like to fly on a empty stomach
any chance you could tell me where you purchased your delta kite? i need parts for mine. cross spar ferrules.
Do you mean the Sweet 16 delta? The only place to get the spares for that would be Into The Wind, I think.
whats the first kite's name
It's called the Eddy Duo, or sometimes the Double Diamond.
thanks
you know that bird on a wire kite, i tried to make a smaller version out of it with wood and kite paper
I hope it went well. It's not the best flying kite - needs a smooth wind for good performance.
i live in a place where the wind blows hard
How convert dual lines to one line kite
I don't know if many of them will fly well as a single-line kite. I have never tried to do it, but the important thing would be to make sure that when you join the two lines together (or replace them with new ones), that the lengths are exactly the same, otherwise the kite will be permanently unbalanced.
Free kite flying tip:
Have fun
That's certainly the main idea!
Wonderful piece, especially the musical background. Many thanks. (UK)
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I’m really going to try to get a few kites and show the neighbors HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH A LITTLE BIT OF WIND!!!
A very good idea, and I hope you have a lot of fun.
My English is poor but you can send a butterfly kite or eagle kite
Wow so fun
Thank you!
awesome!
Don’t let go of your kite.
I lost one years ago. 🙁
That's a very good rule. Have you stopped looking for it yet?
I won't have fun....yes, I like to break rules
That's good! Who wants to be a conformist?
Nice words mate!
Thanks! It's all about the fun.
Uhhh this music
Makes me smile! heheh
Most important rule, never fly around power lines.
That's just common sense and comes under the heading of keeping safe. This video was made as a joke against people who try to make too many rules about kite-flying (and other things) and the most important thing is still to have fun.
I actually wanted to learn how to fly a kite...........
Jim Nicholls thanks! I wasn’t aware that it was a joke video, i watched the one you recommended and it was very helpful!
I never thought that people fly kites 50 in one row😯😯😯
Some people fly more!
Where’s the real rules of kite flight. Everything has to follow the rules of physics.
Jim Nicholls
No when I can’t get it up. ( I really didn’t want to say that but...)
I've not had trouble with that!
Jim Nicholls
🙄 lol. I wasn’t the only one at the kite festival not to get it up. Though I discovered that when it’s flying like a kamikaze I have to give it more string.
Thanks for sharing nice words mate!
Glad you enjoyed it. I made it to make fun of a friend who always wants to make too many rules about everything.
I feel like one of the rules should be don't fly a kite big enough to carry you
Well, back in the old days there were people who liked to build man-carrying kites, and some of them were very useful, especially in the First World War when they lifted observers to see what the enemy were doing (a dangerous job, I think, as they probably got shot at as well as the danger of just being up there!)
BitBeat
I thought that part of the fun?
Jim Nicholls
Kites in the First World War is cool, but it feels a bit like a regression- they were flying observers in hot-air balloons during the Civil War.
That's covered under rule #1.
Cute. haha, and entertaining. Good Fun all around.
I'm glad you saw the funny side. Some people have taken it seriously!
Well, I seriously found it quite enjoyable fun!
You made me laugh out loud - thank you!
You are most welcome.
Roses are red
Violets are Blue
This is all clickbait
And he got you
And you, apparently! Remember, it's all about the fun.
Roses are red
What you've said is true
But only 'cause Mom
Was desperate too
To find a new way
To fly a kite that was old
But we both got tricked
And were scammed with what we were told.
@@gracebarnes8520 There are over 1,600 more videos on this channel, many of which might help your problem. This is just one of many that try to give advice: ruclips.net/video/f2fP9G7bsUE/видео.html . The "10 rules" video was to spoof a friend who thinks everything in kite-flying has rigid rules and everyone should follow them, which takes away all of the fun.
Perches link
For me, single line kites are not that fun. I'd rather fly those sport kites and have some action and control over the kite.
You're watching the wrong channel in that case.
Jim Nicholls As I said, I don't like FLYING single line kites, but I ENJOY WATCHING them.
That's good!
Sergej What do you want us to do? Do you want a medal?
and telling us what we need
We don't buy kite we build kite with bamboo
You are more clever than I am.
những cánh diều rất đẹp
It sure is, David, and I should fly it more often.
have fun
it's a lot cheaper then flying R/C model aircraft I used to do them in my younger days and with the fuel at nearly £40 it's not cheap stuff just keep it away from naked flame
Some people do both, of course, like my friend David (CirrusRC on RUclips), but the price of fuel would certainly be a deterrent.
Oh my gót
Luv the music
Wow,,,,,, Nice kite, very beautiful
Thank you!
Shite, thought this was going to be educational!!!
It was made as a joke to mock a guy who always takes his flying far too seriously. There are plenty of "how to" videos on my channel, mostly in the playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PL4Dq7dMNMUTWAdatlaefCUJwTlBjWpmj9
This music is cute for this video.. Thanks for sharing.. 😄
Thanks for visiting!
nyc bhai
I feel like most of the rules were "have fun"
That's the whole point. Apart from keeping safe, there should be no "rules" for kite-flying, although some people try to make them, which tends to put people off flying completely. Have fun, be safe - that's it!!!
No rules...seems a little complicated for me. :) Just another enjoyable video. Thanks.
+ratoneJR Just think hard - you'll get it! Glad you enjoyed the video.
And don’t fly a 500m line in the middle of London
Have you tried?
@@JimNicholls yup, kite came down when it suddenly started raining and the line got spread out over a bunch of houses and power lines because I couldn’t reel it back to me before it fell
@@Mechanarian Nasty. Here, if a kite falls over the power lines it's a $500 charge for the power company to come and retrieve it.
@@JimNicholls same here but I managed to pull it over all the houses and lines without messing anything up
Very cute video. It was funny so I liked it myself. Hour others get it and enjoy it! 😀
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
this video gave me crippling depression
Watching this video was like watching a musical! 👌
It was made to make fun of a friend who takes his kite-flying far too seriously, but if it entertains as well, that's great.
@@JimNicholls I'm on your website. I'd like to purchase a kite. Southern California always has the perfect weather ~
My recommendation of the best place to buy is www.pictureprettykites.com . If you enter the code SPECIAL10 at checkout, you'll get a 10% discount, and Helen also gives free postage within your country for orders over $100, I think. Have fun with your purchase, wherever you buy it!
@@JimNicholls Thank you, Jim!
👍👍👍👍👍💪
🤣🤣🤣
Nonsense
It's not meant to be serious! It was a joke aimed at a friend who takes kite-flying too seriously.
Beautiful kites, pointless video
If you read the description, you'd know it was made as a joke against someone I know who takes kite-flying far too seriously. That is the point - to show that you should just treat kite-flying as fun, nothing more.
Rules are overated
That's the reason this video was made, to make fun of someone I know who always wants to have rules about everything.
This was not helpful
It wasn't meant to be. It was made as a joke to make fun of somebody who always tries to make rules about flying. There are another 1,628 videos on this channel that are not jokes, and some of them are very helpful, I'm often told.
Jim love watching your kite flying streams only came across this channel by mistake just amazing I am sixty this year last time I flew a kite I was 10
However looking at your videos and a big plus for me with Donnie knees no running so many great tips about flying kites so I have ordered my first kite a small 7 ft delta
So looking forward to seeing how it go's .
Thank you once again for your brilliant videos .
DAVID
BELFAST .
Hi David, nice to know that a young fellow like you is taking up kite-flying. We oldies (I'm 83) won't be around much longer, so we need some young(er) blood coming in. A delta is a good way to start, and I hope you have a lot of fun with yours. If you have any queries, check out my playlist which has a lot of helpful hints: ruclips.net/user/JimsKitesNZplaylists . I assume you're in Belfast, NI, not the Belfast just up the road from me here in Christchurch, NZ. I'm a bit puzzled, as clicking on your channel ID brings up somebody with a very different name to yours.
