Hi, there is an simpler way to do this. At the back of the mech there's a latch (you can see it briefly at 1:17). Push it down to release the top of the mech which hinges at the front. This gives great access to replace the belt. You do not need to remove the mech from the chassis and risk damaging the ribbon cables etc. Hope that helps.
if you break the latch and its known to happen, your screwed, you dont need to remove ribbons, just angle the drive up after undoing the mounting screws, ive replaced belts on mdm7's many times, through the front as shown here is the easiest way
Nigel thanks so much for this tip! Was having trouble unscrewing the mech. Saw your comment. Boom. Belt replaced in a flash. So much easier. Thanks again brother!
I have a Sony separate about the same age. I'm not sure I'm up to tackling this myself...does anyone know of someone who could do this in the Sheffield/Derby area?
Video pointed me in the right direction and Nigel’s tip on the latch trick was great . I got a replacement belt by using my wife’s hair Braid- bands which luckily came in the exact size as the original belt .
You my man have saved me a fortune . Instead of tacking it for repair your step by step was so easy to follow , I think the wife could have done it after watching you.. Thank you so much Gerald south Wales
Thanks it worked for my Sony Minidisc deck mds-JE780, I managed to change the belt I actually used a Loom band that was laying about. It's working 100% good upload.
Worked fine. To get the new band on I found it easier putting it on the larger cog first then using a paper clip bent out straight with the end turned up to stretch over the smaller cog. Great video and thanks.
Great video. many thanks for your help. had C13 for over 2 years now. Thank you. Cant wait to repair my MD player. I still prefer MD ever since they first came out.
Me too - I was an early adopter when I was rehearsing with a band doing complicated jazz stuff in the mid 90s - I needed to record the rehearsals for practice and the MD was ideal. It was either that or a brick-sized and similarly priced cassette Walkman and I wasn't going to buy that! Loved the format ever since. People laughed at my in-car 6 MD changer. Couldn't care less, the format was much more resilient than CDs for in-car use. When I changed my car for one with Bluetooth etc. I sold the changer and Sony player for what I paid for it. So someone out there agrees with us!
Thank you for this video.. I found it very help when replacing the loading belt on my MDS-JE480 model. The MDS-JE440 may be different, but I found there was enough slack on the ribbons on my model and did not need to pull them out at all.. I just put a soft cloth under the mechanism (once unscrewed) and rested it on the top front of the unit, before removing and replacing the belt.
Thanks a lot! I had the same problem. But I've looked and studied your video and than decided I'll be able to solve the problem by myself. Everything is successfully done! Moreover I'm not a professional repair man, I'm just music lover. Thanks once more!
Don’t worry too much about the belt twist, it will sort itself out after a few ejects. More importantly don’t rotate the larger white wheel too much otherwise you will misalign the eject sled. This is a common cause of disc jam and through trying to remove a stuck disc many an MD drive has been damaged. Belt should for MDM7 drive family should be 17mm dia by 0.8mm square (54mm circumference). Thicker belts (1.0 or 1.2mm) don’t always work.
Interesting. Twisted belts (when replacing belts on portable cassette players) can and often do lead to increased flutter, a mistake I have made before. I see your point concerning mechanisms not affecting audio output, though in practice, twisted belts are annoying, whether or not they may affect performance. Good point you make though.
Hi watched your video and got a replacement belt and managed to fix it. Thanks for the video on that. The disc now ejects but now I’ve set up a new sound bar and now no audio it’s playing ok but no audio from both the coax supplied and my optical cable. Any suggestions?
@RedDragonUKTech Thanks for showing how to remove the disk manually. I had a disk stuck in mine ALMOST fully in and wouldn't come out or go fully in... but was in enough for the drive to spin up and play :-o . When it spun up you could hear the circular disc rubbing on something (changed speed as the motor spun up and down) ... do you have any idea what it was rubbing on?
are most eject issues caused by a faulty belt? could it need grease? im about to get a sharp md-x5 and they said discs sometimes get stuck, is there a way to know if its the belt versus lube problems?
Hi. Where can i get a new loading belt please? Can it be "home/hand made" ? I have a SONY DS9 deck with the same loading and eject issue. Thanks for your expected advises.
Afraid not but if you search for the model number of your deck plus the word belt you should find someone who’s selling the right one. That’s what I did and it was only a couple of quid so not too bad.
Hi, How do you fix a "NO DISC" error ? I have a Sharp MiniDisc MD-T20 unit which gives me a "NO DISC" error everytime I put in a MiniDisc. 😞😭 I was able to fix the TOC ERRORa fairly easily but now this is happening. 😕 I cleaned the focusing lens with a cue tip. I also tried adjusting the potenciometer on the reading head either. Thanks ! 🙄🖒 Best Regards,
Oh man I just bought this model off eBay. I’m feeling kinda nervous here. Hopefully I won’t run into issues but thankfully RUclips has plenty of videos to remedy my problem if one is to occur…
Та же проблема, только резиина стала соплей, пытаюсь почистить. И какого фига в такой цифровой штуке паассик а не шестернии не понятнно, не логичнно. 😊
Thank you for the video, I got my old Sony Minidisc player working again. It took all of 5 minutes, got the belt on eBay, part number 422702501 for my MDS-JE440

But first you need to remove the small spring on the side. Be careful not to lose it or stretch it.

Maybe I should give it a go then, if it's so easy even a woman can do it! 😉will I need a degree in Mechanical Engineering?

Thanks for the guidance, new belt from eBay and fitted as per your video, worked a treat on my 15 year old player.
👍 Thanks again.

Thanks for this, just dug my identical MD player out of the loft after 15yrs, same issue! I’ll give this fix a try.

Replacement belt available on Ebay but what type tweezers are they and where from please?

The belt that you've replaced seems to be very tight... it would be a larger belt, no?

Linx Audio on eBay
@@kevinallen9106 Thanks a lot
Thank you for your video, it will help me a lot.
BRILLIANT thanks for that 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Will this also fix the drive not "taking in" the disc?
Many thanks for up loading - fixed
Hi, good video. But, do you know what size the belt actually, to save taking it apart twice.
Afraid not but if you search for the model number of your deck plus the word belt you should find someone who’s selling the right one. That’s what I did and it was only a couple of quid so not too bad.
On eBay that was.....
17mm dia by 0.8mm square section. That’s 54mm circumference. Thicker belts 1.0 or 1.2mm don’t always work. See Linx Audio on eBay.

Proper job
Wich size is the belt?
very small
17mm x 0.8mm square
This looks like the equivalent to the MS-JE320 sold in the States.
320 is a couple of years earlier than 440.
