My Dad brought a new Cadillac Coupe DeVille in the late 70's - said it was the only car he ever purchased that came "standard" with rust. He said the metal under the vinyl top rusted. I guess we all drove that junk because it was all we knew - until we got a Honda for my brother. We didn't buy another GM or Ford product thereafter. Such a shame. Certainly the quality gap has narrowed since, but I must admit I'm a Toyota guy now. Hard to beat a 4Runner!
There was once a time when some GM cars were really good. I like the ones I had. Too many "cheap" (not in price) cars are made. Today you have to pay an arm and a leg to get a good vehicle. I like my latest GM vehicle quite well (2020 GMC Yukon).
The country was in decline, 80's , my generation (56) my highly, destructive generation we are in a 747 at 5000 thousand feet with one engine low on fuel, no landing gear.
That sure is a lot of testing. Makes me wonder how a vehicle so thoroughly tested could have a leaky trunk from day one. Also at under 80,000 miles have blown head gaskets and paint coming off the body panels. Something does not add up here.

My god now that I look back they really were junk
GM was hit and miss by 1980. The Buicks, Olds, and most Caddy's we're ok . But the Chevettes , X cars , many others were questionable at best.
