- This past year I've been making frequent visits to Sydney. For this flight in May 2023, I traveled on this United nonstop flight from San Francisco in Economy Plus. I was able to try both my meal and my wife's gluten free meal and surprisingly the gluten free meal was delicious, especially the dinner entree. It seems that the catering has changed and the food quality has improved. My one critique of UA is their new pillows for Economy and Economy Plus class is just terrible. The pillow does not have enough stuff inside for it to be comfortable. it's absolutely useless. Enjoy the beautiful views descending to Sydney. Such a beautiful city!

On a sunny day in May 2009 i walked trough the botanical garden near the Sydney Opera and i looked up to the sky. There was a United 747-400 in the older color sheme climbing trough the clouds very slowly on it's way to SFO. I will always remember that. . .
Thanks for sharing! That must have been a wonderful scene! I miss flying on UA 747's on this route.
As a Sydneysider who's recently moved to The Bay Area, man do I miss my beautiful city. Thank you for this video. I did Fiji Airways Sydney - Nadi - SFO. When I go back to Sydney, I'll do the direct United flight.
I love Sydney, its such a fabulous city. All the more curious as to why you moved to the US? If I had the chance I love to live in Sydney forever.
@@BayAreaTraveler My partner is from the Bay Area. Due to family circumstances, it would have been very difficult for her to move to Sydney. So, I made the big move across the Pacific. It's been 2 weeks now, and the traffic here is driving me nuts! I'll never complain about traffic in Sydney again.
Very nice. Hope you enjoyed your time down under.
Thanks! yes, it was a great time in Sydney. 😄
I did LAX/SYD/LAX on UA back around 1998 or so. Flights 815/816 (same flight numbers of the PA flights they took over). The SP’s had been replaced by 744’s by then however.
Thanks for sharing!
I don’t know, I guess I’m kinda old. But in the 1980s-1990s the economy class seats seemed to be wider. Or maybe I was just skinnier then.😅
You are absolutely correct. It's not because you're old or imagining things. When the 777 was introduced in the mid 90's, actually the seating configuration was 3-3-3 or 2-5-2 or in other words 9 abreast. But airlines figured out that if they reduced the seat width by an inch or so, they can squeeze that extra seat, 10 abreast, for more profit.
Great video! :) The meal you had was better than my Premium Select meals I had with Delta (to Sydney).
That pineapple has seen better days. lol
Thank you! I'm quite surprised that UA's meal was better than Delta's. I always thought that Delta had better meal offerings.
The meals really pale in comparison to what I had on QR in economy earlier this summer. And all the fruit was fresh as well haha
I must admit, the food offerings exceeded my expectations. It looks on par with Qantas
Yeah the quality of the food on this flight was quite a surprise. It seems that UA may have changed their food vendor at SFO.
Amazing video like always!
Thank you!
@@BayAreaTraveler i love your long haul flights
Good report. Glad your long flight was in Eco+. However, I'm not a fan of the color of the pillow covering. Other than that, everything looks ok.
Thanks Jeff for watching! Yeah not only color off putting but its lack of usefulness. I don’t know what UA was thinking when they converted to these pillows.
They have K-loaders on a commercial airliner?
I'm not sure, I'm not versed in loading devices for commercial airliners.
Is your flight to Sydney 75% full and how many hours did you sleep on the plane?
I don't recall how full the flight was, probably 90%. I didn't sleep that much on this flight, maybe only a few hours if that.
I see.
That’s a cool technique of speeding up the vids but having the narration at normal speed. I just started flying UA again after a 13 years because they fly where I need to go in the coming years because of a relocation for work. I’ve got 11 more flight segments with them before the end of the year, so I’ll get silver status for the last two months of 2023, but it’s annoying because it’s an annual requirement.
Thank you for watching. Yeah I am also trying to reach Silver this year but don’t have enough flights. Post pandemic it’s a lot harder to get status. I had Gold prior to the pandemic :( Best wishes on all your flying adventures!
I thought I heard a machine gun fire when the video started. Wtf
That's not gun fire. Those are the sounds of the luggage wheels going through those little bumps on the ground to assist with the visually impaired.
The awful 777 3-4-3 economy configuration on a long haul flight. Should not be allowed.
Agree 3 4 3 config is pretty rough for long haul flights
That food looks horrible. It's almost like they go out of their way to make it bad (ie. adding the sausage bits in with the eggs).
Actually the food didn't taste that bad at all on this flight. I think UA has made some progress with their catering. The dinner was surprisingly good. As for breakfast could have looked better but as they say taste is king and taste wise the main dish was pretty good.
@@BayAreaTraveler Glad you liked it.
That's pretty nit picky bitching about the pillows. You got to your destination in one piece. Be grateful and thank everyone who made it possible for you to get to your destination safely!
This is a trip report or review and I have the liberty to point out the positives and negatives about the flight. Having a good pillow is important as this is a long haul flight of 15 hours. I mentioned this so that those passengers who need to rest on the flight can be forewarned so they can be properly prepared. Having proper rest is that important!!
Well said traveler. I bring my own usually. A good neck pillow on a long flight is critical. Not bitching at all. Very informative
@@breamben Thank you for your comment. Indeed a good neck pillow is so crucial. Likewise, I bring my own as well.
@@breamben Yea. You're right man. The airline gave me stale pretzels and the pillow was too small. I'll never fly with that airline again.
@@roadracer1584 You completely missed the point. In my video I never said that I would not fly on UA again. The whole point of a trip review is to point out the good and the bad to help future flyers on their travels. Having a good pillow helps to make one's journey more comfortable especially for a long haul flight.
