      Everyone talks about the content the ads are rolled on, but nobody's talking about the target audience for the ad which is really weird to me. There are such out-of-place ads on YT, Twitch, etc. because they aren't doing any targeting. There isn't a whole lot of vetting going on either, which means inappropriate ads leak through all the time. This is all wasted money from a marketing perspective and it boggles my mind how it is still considered a positive thing in the industry.

Also pushing it back and pushing it back, you lose ad revenue in the end. And when he says he pauses for ads, he doesn’t just leave the people with no ads hanging, he pauses his main content and just chats while the ads are playing, which builds ties with the community who didn’t get ads, and more importantly the community members who have dropped money on his channel purchasing subs or turbo or connected via amazon prime. @doobster3650 4 месяца назад

      @@wisnoskij Sorry but I think this is just a non-point - really feels like your criticising just for the sake of it. I only say this because I don't see how your point makes any sense.
      Both viewers and streamers are very vocal about their hatred for ads - because it ruins the continuity of the stream. So, having an option that allows viewers to opt out of ads, while still being profitable to the streamer, AND making twitch more money, it's a win-win-win scenario. Your point, is that turbo doesn't benefit the streamer because they can run their ads at intentional times... which is confusing because if that was the case, then streamers wouldn't complain about having to run ads. It's almost like you can't time 3 minutes of ads per hour in a way that doesn't interrupt the stream.
      And while it's true that streamers do time their ads for when they are leaving the room for example, not only is this for a small fraction of total ads run, but anyone who intends to watch the stream further is probably not engaging with the ads directly, in the same way they also won't engage with the empty chair. When an ad is run, viewers aren't all of a sudden bound to their chair or the stream tab.
      In summary, I don't mean for this to come off in a confrontational way, but I just think there's not really a point to be had here. This is a win for every party involved, and if you made this argument not knowing too much about twitch in the first place (which I would assume is the case since you thought all ads were able to be timed in a non-invasive way), I would encourage you to make points that are actually based on your knowledge, not just assumptions.

  • @michaelj7677
    @michaelj7677 4 месяца назад +43

    Hey, I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but Twitch (probably) doesn't choose the ad for the streamer. Most ads on the internet are being auctioned in real time. Twitch sends the information about the type of viewer to some auction server. Then different companies respond with a cpm they are willing to pay, based on individual algorithms. Highest cpm wins. The whole thing takes less than 400ms.
    When you see an ad for some product you have visited before, Twitch (or whatever website is selling ad space) has no clue. The advertiser does. They know you, so they bid very high cpm and win the auction.

      Cosmic wisdom up here

    • @chernobyl169
      @chernobyl169 4 месяца назад +14

      This does explain the lack of targeting. If ad service is by algorithm there is no capacity for consideration of target audience. Ironically, one of the most fundamental laws of marketing that I learned about 25 years ago is that the single greatest thing you can do to multiply the return on marketing expense is to market to your target audience. All this clamor for CPM and view rates and nobody is considering the impact of wasted marketing.
      For example, I live in a three story apartment complex. Last week, I received in my mailbox a flyer for a roofing company. So did all 100+ residents of this apartment complex, all renters. The amount of revenue that ad spend will generate is virtually guaranteed to be zero, yet they spent it because they didn't think about their target audience; they simply saw "100+ addresses" and pulled out the credit card. Wasted marketing.

For example, make turbo more worth while by allowing sub emotes on the channel you are watching, but not globally(to still incentivise subbing), a global discount on subs and gifts, one free channel sub (in addition to prime sub), allow Turbo members access to 4k streams, and Turbo members get more channel points passively. Sorry, Im new to a lot of this, but this doesnt seem to be relevant to me
      Im specifically talking about seeing new streamers that I havent seen before (which is the vast majority of them for me), and 95% of the time, theyre already in the middle of their stream.
      However they setup their stream earlier is long past done
      Again, maybe Im not a typical person, and most folks wait to see the start of a stream, then join in, and my difference is whats causing the issue.

    “Twitch’s Pre-Roll runs 8 ads for someone when they start watching your stream.”
    In my own experience - as an American living in the US and watching streamers also streaming from the US and at all times of the day - I have never seen more than 3 Pre-Roll ads when joining a channel to which I’m not subscribed, and the collection of ads have never lasted more than 30secs
    In fact they’re usually 15-20secs total for up to 3 ads (10secs each), but usually only 1 or 2 ads at 10-15secs each
    No idea where you got the 8 ads figure from, I’ve never experienced that many
    IMO I’d rather 1) as a viewer wait for the ads to finish than just click away, and 2) as a streamer below 100CCV attract the viewers with enough patience and curiosity to wait and see what I have to offer before discarding me out of hand, because those viewers are more thoughtful and far more likely to come back next stream than the ones who’d rather click away
    The other reason I only use Pre-Rolls is logistical: the format of my content (long-format challenge runs over 3 hours in length) is largely incompatible with ad breaks even as far apart as 1 hour … the ad breaks are almost never at a convenient time during a run, even using the Snooze feature as many times as is allowed (3x up to 10 mins each), and even if I manually double-up an ad break with a warm engagement immediately after a scheduled one, and let’s face it, running 6mins of ads at one time is a really big ask of viewers, even after two hours of no ads
    For streamers at 100+CCV it makes sense to limit or eliminate Pre-Rolls by running Mid-Roll ads at 3mins/hour, because at that level you actually get a significant monetary return on your investment in the risk of losing viewers during ads. At sub-100CCV the minuscule return isn’t worth the risk in having viewers leave when your content is interrupted, even if you pause your content (which I very often can’t) after a warm engagement intro to the ad break.
    When I tested running scheduled Mid-Roll ads every hour or every 2 hours - with a warm engagement and pausing my content - for two straight months, my Followership *plateaued*… until I went back to just Pre-Rolls
    There’s no single ads strategy that works for every streamer and every viewer. You have to figure out what works the best for you, your content, and especially for your viewers / community.

      For me, also as a US viewer that watches US streamers at all times of the day, if I switch on a channel, be it for a streamer I've watched hundreds of hours of or never seen for a second, and an ad pops up, I'm instantly switching off the channel. I don't care how many ads there are, how much I've watched that streamer before, or anything else. I refuse to watch ads before I've seen any actual content.
      And frankly, Turbo is a good idea. The main issue I have with Turbo is that I ALREADY get everything I need out of it for free. There are multiple browser extensions that block ads on twitch and trick the system into thinking you're watching the ad. By all known logic, streamers shouldn't be losing money because Twitch thinks you watched the ad, and viewers don't lose anything because they didn't have to watch the ad. For free. As long as that tech exists, Turbo will never be worth it except as a way to tangentially support your favorite creators.

      For the record, I also use browser extensions to sidestep all ads on channels … Ad plays, I click the Expand widget in the shrunken stream video and unmute inside that, then mute the main video feed - ad plays and streamer gets the view credit, and I get the stream too, albeit at lower video and audio quality for a minute or two.
