After years of enviously watching all the Longprimer videos on this channel I finally took the plunge and ordered a black 53C SPC!

Your review prompted me to look into this Bible. Long story short… RL Allen had exactly one copy available at a discounted price - Navy Blue, just like yours, but w/red under gold. I’m excited and this will be my first RL Allen.

Greta review as always, Mr. Wildsmith! I love how they changed a bit of the style to add some sort of flair with the speckled page edges.
This Oxford Longprimer will always be iconic to the premium Bible world. I really hope they would keep on doing this Bible style for the generations to come.
And may I ask, do you happen to know the font style they used here? It seems really aesthetically pleasing to read through.
Keep on doing these great reviews, sir! Your walk-through, video quality, and editing are excellently done. God bless you!

Thank you for the kind words, Nikko! I read somewhere that the font was a custom typesetting from the 1950s, but I'm not quite sure since Allan's website does not give specifics. I agree with you, though, it is quite pleasing.

Tim Wildsmith The Bible is named after the font style “Longprimer” 😉 I have owned a few of these I got my info from an old post on the R.L. Allan Facebook page several years ago....another Bible enthusiast asked Allan the same question.

I have a 53C NB, not the speckled one, and also an older 53. I go back and forth as to which one I prefer. I love the cyclopedic concordance, I was so excited when RL Allan put out a Longprimer with one, since I loved the one in my Brevier Clarendon, but some days I think I like the references in the plain 53 better - I can find things faster and they don't take up as much space. In the past, Oxford published a Longprimer of the "S. S. Teacher's Edition", which had basically the same features as the Brevier Clarendon, with chapter summaries and words italicized that were inserted by the translators. If Allan ever published one of those, I'd probably have to buy another KJV from them.

The oldest version I have seen with a Cyclopedic concordance dated back to 1901. Is a Oxford Self-Pronouncing Bible, S.S. Teacher's edition.

I really enjoy this layout. I wish I could get a NASB2020 or NIV in a format exactly like this Longprimer. Love the helps and classic font, the goatskin, and yapp. As a pastor, this would be a terrific format from which to preach. Though again, in a different translation. Still, if you're going to get a KJV. this one is hard to beat! Great review.

I really want to get an Allen bible. But they dont really have what im looking for. My favorite one, is my Nelson thinline kjv with goatskin. 36gsm paper on a thinline. The Allens are beautifully crafted. I may get one eventually, but im on the fence about it.

Gorgeous Bible. I have a couple premiums but don't actually have a Longprimer yet, so I think that's my next one up. I would prefer blue or green, and I definitely want the cyclopedic concordance. The one in this video essentially is perfect. Unfortunately, it's sold out and beyond that, I literally cannot seem to find a single 53C of any color for sale online whatsoever. Have to be patient I guess?

Purchased on of the bibles about 6 weeks ago. A lttle disappointed. I own 5 other Allans and they have all been quality bibles. This is the first one that had a couple of issues. I actually had to shave the spine of the goatskin . They were a lot of hair bristles still sticking out of the leather. The other issue is where the edge of the leather was folded over and glued. They missed a 1 inch portion right by one of the corners. Am going to go to a crafts shop and try and find some quality glue to finish the section that Allan failed to complete. Just a little disappointed with Allan. They can do better.

Think about it like this guys. They only made about 100 of these for each color variation. So in other words, you’d be 1 of 100 on the planet (7 billion population ) with an Allan 53 that’s speckled. That in and of itself makes the 300$ price tag worth it!

Tim, really enjoyed the review. I have just received my 53 and noticed on John chapter 3 the heading appears to be wrong. The heading for John 3 says Christ purgeth the temple. John 3 has nothing to do with that. Does your have the same heading? Just trying to figure out if I have a misprint.
    Thanks.

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  4 года назад

It's not a misprint. Mine says the same. These are vintage Oxford typesettings, so it's probably just a case that the heading from Chapter 2 has been on that page since back then.

It's not really up to Charfleet, but RL Allan what they want to produce. I have this in Black and it is beautiful. Allan has said they won't be producing any more of these for a while.
Many Allan die-hards won't buy a Bible bound by Charfleet. Note the smear of red paint in the upper left corner on the left side page at 5:48. I have something similar in gold in mine as well. For $267 the quality could be improved.

Do realize that even though Allan and Schuyler Bibles are considered the best quality Bibles available, there is no place you can go to and see and handle the Bibles yourself before buying one? Not even at the offices of Evangelical Bibles, the distributer in the USA!
    Somebody needs to fix that.

    • @timwildsmith

@@timwildsmith That is so true, and I understand. However, it is possible to go into a Christian bookstore in practically any major city and physically examine a wide variety of Bibles by all the major publishers - except these. Many of us consider spending $200+ for a Bible to be a once in a lifetime event; we will never have a dozen or so of them just for fun.
