Greg you have by far the best cocktail channel on youtube, and I know you read your comments so let me give some advice:
when you introduce a new liqeur or ingredient to your drink and it's somewhat obscure, give a brief explanation and history of what it is. You seem every knowledgeable, so next time you introduce some kind of ingredient that isn't well-known you should tell the viewers what exactly it is and what kind of flavor/notes it's gonna add to the drink. Keep doing your thing. I love your channel.
    Cheers.

Actually, the heavily watered grog you describe was from the late 1800s and 1900s. In Nelson's day it was what was called 2 water grog, or 3 water grog, meaning 2 parts or 3 parts water to one part navy rum. To this mixture was added a little sugar and some lemon and / or lime juice. This resulted in a drink similar to a weak daiquiri. Even earlier, before they understood the anti scorbutic properties of citrus fruits, the grog was just water and rum. Also, the open tubs of water, or "scuttlebutts" were just for immediate drinking, and were kept clean. Water was stored in sealed oak barrels in the hold until use. Yes, it could get pretty stale and nasty there in the barrels, and that is why it was mixed with rum, which killed any bacteria which had grown in it. The older version of grog, just rum and water, became known as "American grog" because the addition of sugar and citrus was later in the U. S. Navy. One of my favorite drinks is 2 water American grog made with 151 proof Gossling's Black Seal rum, a real Navy rum.

If you have them, try with Plantation 3 Star, Don Q Anejo, and Smith & Cross. And bump the allspice up to 1/3 oz. Very light and dry, and not what people probably expect of tiki. My favorite Navy Grog recipe is the Atomic Grog’s tribute to the Mai Kai’s Yeoman’s Grog.

We just got back from a week in Hawaii, I made Grog before we left just to see how I would like it, I did, my father in law did, so, when I was there, I made 3 batches of Grog to bring to the beach and pool, I also made mai tai's for my wife, I noticed that when I was talking with people and their drinks had run out that they brought for themselves, I would offer them the choices I brought and what I found was that men prefer Grog and the women would prefer the mai tai. What I think made the Grog better was a friend from Hilo who brought me a big bag of Hilo limes from his lime tree. They taste different than your standard lime we find in the States and made for a more authentic Grog.

Hey, I recently made a cocktail called the 'Gulf Side', which I found a recipe of when looking for cocktails with absinthe in them. I really liked it, but I haven't found any youtube vids on it. The recipe is as follows:
5 cucumber slices, 2 to muddle, 3 for garnish (scewered by toothpick)
1,5 ounce of tequila (I used sierra silver)
    3/4th ounce of lime juice
    3/4th ounce of simple syrup
1 barspoon of absinthe (I used Rodnik's classic absinthe)
Shake all liquids with the 2 muddled slices of cucumber and ice, poor into coupe glass and serve with the remaining cucumber slices as garnish.
Do you know of this drink? What do you think of it? How would you improve it?

I couldn't find English Harbor at my local mega spirits outlet, so I had to order the Smuggler's Cove book to get that super secret yummy rummy code. A generic Bacardi & Coke is tonight's nightcap..

The bartenders at Trader Vic's Atlanta know us so well that the first thing they do is mix a Navy Grog for my wife and a Zombie for me when they see us.
FWIW, though, Antigua is pronounce An-tee-ga, not An-tee-gwuh. I didn't know this until I met Jamaica Kincaid and heard her talk about her island.
